ADVICE NEEDED: Unique Tourna Big Hitter 17 vs Ashaway Monogut 17

Hi folks I've been a long time user of Tourna Big Hitter 17 and I'm pretty happy with using it as the mains with my Gosen Micro 17 in the crosses. However, with the Australia dollar falling I'm not keen on shelling out the extra money to get Big Hitter.

I'm now looking at Ashaway Monogut 17 as an alternative but I've never hit with Ashaway Monogut before. So my biggest concern and question to you guys who might have played with both is: Which string has better tension maintenance? And does Ashaway Monogut produce as much spin as Tourna Big Hitter?

What I look for in my poly mains is that I don't want it to go dead too quickly. I've also asked about the spin because I read customer feedback on Ashaway Monogut's 16L version and a number of people said they were disappointed with the level of spin. Thanks in advanced for your enlightenment.

I have never used big hitter, but i love Ashaway strings, i have a partial with them, and i think for a poly the spin is pretty decent but it does have a tendency to go bad after awhile, but money wise i believe its a lot cheaper than big hitter over all, and just as good if not better a string

I played it once on a Wilson H5 racket. I thought it did not bite the ball like a poly should, even Gosen Poly Ice had more bite then this string. I hit with Big Hitter many years ago and I remember it to be some what a spinny string but not as much pop as ALU power or enduro pro.

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I'll buy 5 packets of Ashaway and 5 of Tourna Big Hitter just in case I don't like Ashaway. That way, I only have to endure Ashaway Monogut 17 for 10 hybrid string jobs before going back to my trusty Big Hitter mains.

Monogut plays a little more like a syn gut but spin is roughly equal, with a slight edge to big hitter. Biggest difference is that Monogut plays great the first 3-5 hours you hit with it. then it goes dead, completely. You're not losing much control but it lacks pop. Big hitter maintains playability longer but I really like monogut. It's durable and has good pop. I think it plays much better than big hitter so I don't mind restringing every 2 hitting sessions.

I used to play with Prince Synthetic Gut with Duraflex 17 gauge exclusively before I tried Monogut about 3 years ago.

Monogut will give you A LOT more spin than PSGD, I'll tell you that.

Please read carefully. I said spin is equal to big hitter, not a syn gut.

i think the OP did the right thing - get some sets of each and try for themselves. it's the only way to be sure. i prefer big hitter. i found monogut completely crap, to be honest. but that's just my opinion. let us know which one you like better.

Yes, I've tried BH blue. Didn't care for it. I hit with very heavy spin so slight differences in spin production don't matter that much to me though I tend to agree with you. BHB maintains playability and tension better but I didn't find the same level of control. That's rare for me to say because I believe 98% of control comes from your strokes, not from the strings.

OP, if cost and tension maintenance are your main concerns, how about trying Cyber Flash? I've gone back and forth between BH and CF, both with Gosen Micro crosses, for a couple of years. They are very similar strings. CF is cheaper than BH if you buy it in reels, and holds tension longer. I'd say BH has just a little more spin potential and a slightly stiffer feel, but they're pretty close. I've settled on CF as my regular string now, mostly because of the price difference.

ashaway monogut is great...for about a week. the spin is decent though but compared to other polys its just average. and as far as big hitter....bleh. just get the ashaway. its cheap and you can get good performance out of it for about a wk or 2.

Damn I totally forgot to take a look at Cyberflash. Anyway, today my package arrived so I'll be able to play string up one racquet with Big Hitter 17 in the mains and the other with Ashaway Monogut 17 in the mains.

I'll play test them both and come back and tell you guys what I think for anyone considering these two strings in future.
