Alexander Zverev is given suspended eight-week ban and handed an additional £19,000 fine by the ATP after his Mexican Open outburst that saw him smash his racket by the umpire's feet and shout: 'You're a ******* idiot, you ******* destroyed the whole ******* match'

Following a review, the ATP found the 24-year-old German had committed 'aggravated behaviour' and issued an additional fine of $25,000 (£19,060) and an eight-week ban from any ATP-sanctioned event.

The ATP said, however, the ban and the additional fine were suspended, providing that over a probation period ending one year after the incident, Zverev does not incur any more fines for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Its partiality, pliskova was not suspended.
Anyways, it does mean goodbye to Sunshine double & large part of clay season for the German, right? Including the defence of his madrid title.

So it's a suspended suspension...

How creative but they've been doing this for other players so I guess it makes sense. He's pretty much on a good behaviour bond.

Pretty sure they did this with Kyrgios and/or Fognini after his ridiculous remarks at 2017 US Open to that umpire...

Yep. A non-suspension suspension.

Evidence that the ATP is more of a business than a players' union that its primary interested in profits. Zverev's presence sells tickets to major tournaments and he is a contender to win those tournaments. From a business standpoint, it does not make sense to suspend him from playing especially as tennis is just rebounding from the pandemic which saw many tournament cancellations or were played without income from spectators.

If he doesn't behave himself for the next 12 months the 8 week ban will take affect and depending on his next indiscretion they may add to it.
Pretty sure the ban will take place then, gentleman.
Also, For someone who understands basic Russian, I can confirm that Zverev throws a lot of cusswords in Russian on court; and so do the likes of Rublev & Bublik.

It means the penalty hangs over him for a year. If he commits a similar offence within that year, the eight week ban will be enforced following the new offence. If he behaves himself for that year, then nothing happens to him.
Weird policy, but I don't necessarily disagree.

and I am still waiting on when ATP going to punish Novak for trying to kill that lineswoman... I guess Zeverev are judged on a different standard than Novak!.

How is this remotely the same thing. Is the net a living, breathing thing? Zverev aimed at the umpire's legs in a brutal manner and it's down to the umpire's reflexes that he didn't get hurt. Stop with these ridiculous false equivalences. Novak's on-court behaviour is never the best, but he's way better than Zverev. I haven't seen him "intentionally" assault an umpire / officials in this manner. However I will criticise Novak for normalising such horrendous behaviour on the pretext of "made a mistake". Yes, we all make mistakes. But when your "intentional" mistake comes at the cost of potentially injuring/intimidating an official, there needs to be consequences for this kind of behaviour. The ATP keeps letting him get away with anything. What a pathetic sham.

A player went over the line and does something woefully inappropriate

ATP tour: We should ban him to set an example as the fine means nothing to established millionaires.

Events: He makes us and you guys money though! Banning him would lose us money, possibly more than the fine itself!

ATP Tour: Damn you're right! Maybe we should put him on a year long warning instead so it still looks like a punishment to the casual viewer who doesn't dig further?

Events: Perfect *slips ATP Tour a cheque*

Considering you like calling for people to be banned it’s no surprise you are a Nadal fan! #onon

Djokovic , Zverev are friends and their fans supporting them for whatever they do , keep it up. If women was not rescued in time she might have heart attack in shock due to him hitting the lineswoman with a tennisball in anger , although it was unintentionally , why Djokovic like Zverev faced no suspension. Why are you angry like Djokovic ? Never his fault?

His fans also feel for Zverev but not for the Umpire
In order to get better calls for their players, their fans need to make friends with the umpires too, have dinner and some drinks, so they can also feel compassionate with them. If this doesn’t work, they should explore other options or incentive offers to said umpires.

Come off it Novak did not hit that ball in anger he tapped it as the game had ended and unfortunately it hit the woman.
How was what Zverev did any worse than what Plishkova did? Did she get banned?

So i was reading into the code of conduct rules in place and this means he's on a tight leash as he cannot verbally abuse anyone. He's obviously not going to attack anyone else in the same way but there is no way in hell he will survive the year without verbally abuse someone over a bad decision and when that day comes will the ATP follow through on this warning? I HIGHLY doubt it.

So Novak was not angry when he hit the ball when he lost the game to PCB ? Seriously? He might have not hit hard but he hit it out of anger and frustration , and do away with whataboutism , Zverev clearly attacked Umpire . Look dude Djokovic and Zverev has anger issues and they need help and apologists like you make it difficult by worshipping these brats . I'll never forgive Djokovic or Zverev . This was not the first time when he couldn't control himself on court, he was even pointed out by a journalist but he played it down. Didn't he ? but he couldn't be lucky forver to get away with that .

I agree, beating the Olympic Rings is an act of goodness - a corrupt world of old men!

I have watched that replay many many times and no I don’t believe that ball was hit in anger look at Novak’s face there is no anger in his face he just hits the ball carelessly at the end of the game and it could have gone anywhere. It was very unfortunate but not hit in anger.

Okay sure ! Djokovic is Buddha reincarnate on court.
