...or winning "La Decima"... ever. Sorry.
We've all read the headlines. Nadal triumphed in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. He just won his 8th straight match. Christ on a cracker. Watch out everyone, Nadal is back. He's ready to sweep the clay season and become relevant again.
This is back page news people. Nadal is beating a bunch of bums. Thiem, at age 22.5, is just as big of a loser as the generation before him. He has actually accomplished even less than generation useless had by his age. Nishikori is past his prime (not that he had much of one to begin with), Wawrinka has admitted that he has ZERO goals whatsoever for this season, and Murray, who would like nothing more at this point than to be a stay at home dad and homemaker to Kim and Sophia, has one good win in two years.
Nadal's recent success is heartwarming. It's always nice to see a fading legend in the win column for old times' sake, even if it happens while the incumbant world #1 is halfway dead after having just played a million straight finals and the rest of the tour is in its worst shape in history. But Novak won't be losing to Vesely outside of his hometown when he hasn't been laying on the couch eating cheetos or hanging out with his buddies all week.
What short memories we have. Let's recall what happened last time Nadal had a good run during last year's indoor season. "Bull is back," people said. He even avenged his USO loss to Fognini in Beijing in straights, but what happened the next day in the final against Novak? He humiliated himself after struggling to win just 4 games. A few weeks later, he went 3 - 0 in the round robin of the WTF, easily beating top 10 has beens Ferrer, Wawrinka, and Murray. All that effort just to get beat down by Novak yet again.
Novak has owned Nadal everywhere but RG for years. Last year, he got the monkey off his back and, if they meet there again in June, expect an even more one sided encounter this time around. He has won 10 of 11 matches and 13 straight sets versus Nadal. After last year's RG quarterfinal match between the two, I doubt Novak even respects Nadal as a man. And fair enough.
Look, I'm as big of a Nadal fan as anyone, but he isn't winning RG any more than he isn't looking completely awkward in every photo of a Tommy Hilfiger advertising campaign. Just stop. Those days are past. Novak owns Nadal.
