An ounce of reason to balance out the insanity: Nadal is not beating Novak this clay season

...or winning "La Decima"... ever. Sorry.

We've all read the headlines. Nadal triumphed in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. He just won his 8th straight match. Christ on a cracker. Watch out everyone, Nadal is back. He's ready to sweep the clay season and become relevant again.

This is back page news people. Nadal is beating a bunch of bums. Thiem, at age 22.5, is just as big of a loser as the generation before him. He has actually accomplished even less than generation useless had by his age. Nishikori is past his prime (not that he had much of one to begin with), Wawrinka has admitted that he has ZERO goals whatsoever for this season, and Murray, who would like nothing more at this point than to be a stay at home dad and homemaker to Kim and Sophia, has one good win in two years.

Nadal's recent success is heartwarming. It's always nice to see a fading legend in the win column for old times' sake, even if it happens while the incumbant world #1 is halfway dead after having just played a million straight finals and the rest of the tour is in its worst shape in history. But Novak won't be losing to Vesely outside of his hometown when he hasn't been laying on the couch eating cheetos or hanging out with his buddies all week.

What short memories we have. Let's recall what happened last time Nadal had a good run during last year's indoor season. "Bull is back," people said. He even avenged his USO loss to Fognini in Beijing in straights, but what happened the next day in the final against Novak? He humiliated himself after struggling to win just 4 games. A few weeks later, he went 3 - 0 in the round robin of the WTF, easily beating top 10 has beens Ferrer, Wawrinka, and Murray. All that effort just to get beat down by Novak yet again.

Novak has owned Nadal everywhere but RG for years. Last year, he got the monkey off his back and, if they meet there again in June, expect an even more one sided encounter this time around. He has won 10 of 11 matches and 13 straight sets versus Nadal. After last year's RG quarterfinal match between the two, I doubt Novak even respects Nadal as a man. And fair enough.

Look, I'm as big of a Nadal fan as anyone, but he isn't winning RG any more than he isn't looking completely awkward in every photo of a Tommy Hilfiger advertising campaign. Just stop. Those days are past. Novak owns Nadal.

What if Djokovic is upset by someone ?

He has had some much needed time to rest and won't have the distractions of his personal life outside of Monte Carlo. He isn't getting upset by any randoms from now on and Stan "there is nothing I want to accomplish this year" Wawrinka sure as hell isn't beating him again. Pretty sure he's more concerned about replacing his nearly 20 year old girlfriend with a fresh teenager than he is with lifting any trophy.

He may end up going deep at Madrid/Rome and by the time he gets to the 2nd week at FO, he may be burnt ( as usual)

Interesting thoughts here, OP. Little bit ago, happened upon a different thread of yours concerning Ladan & Co. and RG doings. May be time for a resurrection, eh? :)

I am pretty uncertain about how this year's RG plays out. Is Fed just as likely as Nadal to defend his QF?

This is just as bad as the people calling Rafa the favorite to win in Paris ....let's just wait and watch.
I have no doubt Rafa's peak level at MC/Barcelona would lose 3 and 3 to Novak. He couldn't hold serve and was only hitting deep sporadically.
Both his FH/BH vacillated between classic Rafa and 2015 Rafa, basically on a game to game basis.
But it's going to be another 2 weeks at least until they meet, and much longer until the French.
There is nothing reasonable here, OP. Just more noise.

"An ounce of reason to balance out the insanity" Tennis fans, including Nadal fans, have been criticizing him ruthlessly for a year and a half. In the last year it's been very intense, many of his own fans not having a lick of belief that he's gonna win 2 matches in a row. The "Nadal is back" reactions are natural and tbh, they're harmless. Anyone with a brain understands that he would not have done what he has done in the last 3 weeks if Novak was in his way. But he is playing well and he has beat a few good players. The way he is playing is better than it has been for a while. This form could be VERY temporary. But we're enjoying it while it's here. People tend to hyperbolize in these situations, but I'll repeat, it's normal. Let those doing so have their moment.

P.S Some people saying he is back are trolling and looking to bait Novak/Roger fans to diss Nadal (and his chances). The rest are harmless and will be brought down to earth soon.

I will never say never. Djokovic still has to win 7 matches - and he's never done it at RG. He was supposed to smoke Fed when he was on that 40+ win streak in 2011; led Nadal in the 2014 match; had Stan for an easy win last year.

Having said that, the hysterics from the Nadal Kids is truly off the charts moronic. He was clearly being beaten for large chunks of the Thiem, Murray, Monfils matches - good on him to hang in and win them. But the liabilities in his game still exist; serve isn't good enough; return isn't good enough; BH isn't good enough, still drops a lot of FHs short. Djokovic can play solid, unspectacular tennis and beat him every time.

After last year's RG quarterfinal match between the two, I doubt Novak even respects Nadal as a man. And fair enough.

Look, I'm as big of a Nadal fan as anyone,m.
After 6-1 6-3 6-0 trashing in a slam final, I doubt Nadal sees Federer as anything other than his b*tch.
Look I am as big of a Federer fan as anyone, but I sincerely believe Federer feels obligated to finish off Nadal whenever he wishes.

That thread should be sticky'd. I think it's 60/40 whether Federer makes the QF. Nadal most likely will.

Reported for skirting the profanity filter. That sort of language should not be used on this website.

STTYT?

edit: Sorry to tell you that.

It's funny because I don't recall any true Rafa fans claiming that he is back or will win RG. Actually, all the "Rafa is back" and all the "Calm down, Rafa will get owned by Nole/will not win RG" posts/threads were created by other fanbases mostly (boredom, drama?) and then they put the blame on Rafa fans which said absolutely nothing. True Rafa fans were just happy for those victories, it was the others who started exaggerating/downplaying their meaning as soon as they had the chance.

Okay, that's good. These boards have been nothing but hyperbole over the last few weeks.

Yes, case in point:
