Andy Murray is the tennis story of the year.

Guy wasn't able to walk a short while ago.
He's 34 and has a metal hip.

He also beat Alcaraz who beat Top 3 Stefanos

He beat Felix AA, top 12
and went 5 sets against Zverev, #4, one of the top players in the world

He just beat a top 10 player.

Andy is not just back as a #500 scrub.
He is hanging with the big dogs.

His peak shots remind you why he was Big 4.
It's nice to witness again.

A miracle, and enjoy him while it lasts.
Injuries never really go away and he will end this run sooner than later

I wonder how many stories we'd have here, had some other players had the opportunity to get the amount of Wild Cards that famous Andy was able to receive. There're scores of players who had to work harder and Rune comes to my mind as one of them.

What are you smoking?

Djokovic is the tennis story of the year by far.

And I don’t even like the guy.

Might have been, if he'd completed the CYGS

But OP is right. What Murray is doing is unprecedented. Wins over Hurkacz and Tiafoe would be big at his age just coming back from a normal injury, let alone a freaking hip replacement!! People just do not understand how big of a deal this is.

Just goes to show that rankings are more about points gained than a measure of greatness. If you get good draws and you stay fit you can gain points even if you win titles that in other sport would be a draw. One player majors in winning close matches or beating players who are injured or recovering from injury.

Tough for the One player when some of the players he beats are always injured or are recovering from injury.

He hasn’t beaten Felix and he didn’t go 5 with Zverev

I think this talk of a metal hip is misleading. He hasn't had a hip replacement. He still has his own natural hip joint which has had a covering of metal to make its movement smoother and less painful.

"What’s the difference between hip resurfacing and hip replacement?
It’s as different as putting on a hat, or cutting off your head.

During hip resurfacing, your surgeon trims away small amounts of damaged cartilage and bone. You keep almost all the bone in your thigh and hip socket.

With hip replacement, a surgeon removes the entire head of the thighbone and replaces it with a metal stem, which is inserted down into the thigh bone (femur). A metal or ceramic ball secures to the top of the stem. This implant fits into a new metal hip socket, usually with a plastic liner."

For me, the story of the year has been Djokovic. After the disqualification in New York and bagel beatdown at RG last year along with Medvedev’s superb form at the start of the year, Djokovic seemed to be an old relic of pre-COVID times suffering from long-term COVID fog. Instead, he triumphed at the first three Slams of the year to assert his ascent to the GOAT throne especially after getting his revenge on Rafa unexpectedly on Parisian clay. His fall at the Olympics and the USO just reaffirmed that he will always be a flawed hero full of pathos rather than a fairytale prince who elevates tennis to sublime levels for the casual fan and mainstream media.

This is completely wrong on so many levels, yes kudos to guy still not giving up on tennis but it really cant be compared to what djokovic did this year.

Defeating the ultimate opponent on clay.
Being one match away from CYGS
Doing all of this at the age of 34.
Equaling slam count with biggest rivals
double career slam
7th year end
weeks at number 1 record etc...

This reminds me of pushing the agenda of big 4 instead of big 3,i am really detecting similar manipulation and bias here even though it is from one user but it kinda reflects the whole western media in a nutshell...

If Murray won the CYGS that would be a number 1 news this year.

Djokovic on the verge of breaking the one last remaining record held by Sampras, but Murray is the story of this year? OK. :D (y)

Wall to wall world number one, most weeks number one, double career slam, dethroning Nadal at RG, channel slam, equals most slams, overtakes Borg's tally at Wimbledon, gets the most HC slams outright....even wins Belgrade 2! But yeah, lets give this to Murray.

Oh, let's not forget Krejcikova, @volleyandfun. Just like Brady, right, @flyingboris? We have to pay respect to these chumps you all kept telling me were going to thrive by the end of the year. So stop the embarrassed hiding and get yourselves in here to show your champions some respect.

Lol. Novak at 34 wins 3 slams and reaches the final of the fourth. Reaches 20 slams, breaks time at number 1 records, and stops Nadal from winning 21 at RG. An absolutely historic season likely to never be repeated.

So TTW decides that some former great winning a few matches is the story of the year. Or something else
:rolleyes::D:D:D

It was repeated, and broken, by Hingis, several years ago.

Biggest stories this year.
Osaka mental health
Djokovic 20 slams
Djokovic dethroning Nadal
Medvedev stopping CYGS

Andy Murray is not anywhere near newsworthy. He won Vienna in 2019 itself so we know he is good enough to win matches.

I’m talking of men’s tennis. The WTA doesn’t even play Bo5 matches. A different sport
Hingis and Graf played a Bo5 you could only dream from these men, and Hingis had just turned 16. You think she couldn't handle it? She strategized during it. None of the men today can hit a rally past 20 strokes because none of them hit with footwork approaching Hingis' at that age, and what a damned shame that is, I tell you. How would you feel, having to watch these grown-ass adult men getting run around the court by a little kid? Haven't you ever stopped to ask yourself how we haven't progressed beyond this? When Kyrgios is drinking his beers on camera and showing 'Call of Duty kills,' did you ever stop to ask yourself why the hell he with his gut hasn't been outside hitting balls for 6+ hours a day like that little girl was? Do you just expect these men to be so full of weakness? Come on, son. It's pitiful.

Dude, women’s tennis is a different sport. If you like it by all means watch it. Just don’t compare with men.
Try to stay on topic son

Was the tennis topic 'Nadal'? Use the noggin. Talking about I can't compare with the men when Hingis won every mixed doubles out there. Throw your farces in the trash.

Of course Murray wasn't the tennis story of the year. Osaka was. Two extra pan flashes in Krejcikova and Raducanu don't amount to squat. Learn to read the air.

Did Kournikova not whoop on Safin all the time when they were younger? Am I just imagining things?

The biggest story about Murray is his underhand serve, and guess who earned more worldwide press from hers? Here's a hint: another 'Murray' who actually won a slam recently won it in mixed with that woman.

I would even say that Del Potro in his days had more remarkable comebacks from injuries and surgeries.
He still owes us another one, but I think he won’t be able to make it this time again.

Del Potro could barely scrape a single doubles title. Murray at least has this over him. It's about the only quality of his above that man.

Now you are just bloviating. Go do something useful
I thought they were different sports, were they not? So, tell me how Anna was getting boys her age kicked out of the Bollettieri Academy and being the man's top student? How is Murray the best story in tennis history when Osaka's more circulated even while she's on her cruise? Face the facts for once in your life. The women have more acclaim no matter how hard the men try to work at it. Tennis has been a women's sport for over 20 years.

Footwork is a lot easier when the ball is coming at you much slower.

Then tell me why the men are so terrible at it. I don't care how hard you think they hit the ball. A flat shot on the line at 85 MPH is coming away from you faster than a loop boop at 95 MPH.

Also goes by far the closest to CYGS any player has ever been in the last 52 years.

I consider that a big achievement.

Beating Nadal at RG and stopping him from reaching 21 may in hindsight end up as one of his biggest triumphs ever
