Any reason why I shouldn't put an overgrip under the replacement grip?

I want to increase the grip size slightly, but prefer the feel of a replacement grip rather than overgrip. Don't wish to use a 1/2 size grip enlarger due to the weight.

Any reasons for not using an overgrip in this way?

Overgrip. What does the name mean? Over the grip....
But anyways, I understand your situation. But as time goes when you use your base grip, it's gonna wear out and feel terrible. It's gonna shred up, have deep tears and it's gonna blister you. Not to mention all that built up dirt and oil on that thing.
If you choose to do so, fine. But remember, replacing overgrip is much cheaper than replacing a base grip.

If you do want to build up your grip size, there's no problem with using an old overgrip on the bottom. But I recommend using athletic tape. It's thin enough so you can build up the exact size, and its adhesive backing makes it easy to you.

I agree with this suggestion. Seems more sensible and effective.

It can be cheaper if you don't change overgrips often, but in my experience I've found that a replacement grip last much longer than an overgrip. The best thing about an overgrip is its convenience. It doesn't require quite as much precision to replace compared to a replacement grip, and it's a little quicker, since you can have an effective finish without the use of scissors.

All of the replacement grips I've ever used get slick in the humidity and I am left constantly thinking about my hands slipping on the grip. Yonex Supergrap and Tourna prevent these questions in my mind because their absorption is good. Tourna shreds very quickly so Supergrap ftw.

That suggestion turned out to work really well - thanks!

  • The tape is very thin so it doesn't increase the grip size much
  • Good weight to it despite it being thin
  • Adds about 10g to the handle with 50% overlapping of the tape
  • You can still feel the bevels
  • Easy to apply (and remove) a replacement on top of it.
  • Easy to adjust weight because you can overlap more or less depending on how much extra weight you require
Had a choice of replacement grips at different thicknesses and weights to put over the athletic tape:

Bab Syntec (20g) - full size, but made the handle a bit thick with the athletic tape and heavier than I wanted
Bab SkinFeel (17g) - thin, but made the handle a bit too thin
Wilson [K]ontrol grip (19g) - a bit too heavy for this purpose
Tecnifibre Extrem (17g) - just right - not to thin and not too thick

I used the Tecnifibre replacement grip (17g) on top of it and it works well.
