No More Mr Nice Guy
Goran Ivanisevic, the 2001 titlist, says Murray must be positive when he plays Tsonga on Friday. Speaking to Reuters, the popular Croatian looked back at his own career, saying, “I needed to be more arrogant on court. I had too much respect for everybody. For Becker, for [Andre] Agassi, for [Pete] Sampras [and] for [Jim] Courier; I even had respect for the guy ranked No. 100.

"That's why I like Djokovic. He doesn't respect anybody on the court. He's great. Even when he was young, he thought he was going to No. 1 one day, and he became No. 1. Whereas I was always happy being No. 2 behind Sampras... maybe if I thought I could be No. 1, I wouldn't have lost so many matches.

"I had a bad, bad record in the finals. It is the same for Murray. In a final and semis Murray has to take chances because against these guys, he can't wait for them to miss as they are never going to miss. He has to make them miss and he has to put the pressure on them."

People have complained about Federer being arrogant. Apparently Djokovic seems arrogant, Sampras was also arrogant....is being arrogant a requirement for being a dominant #1?

Yes, I think so. But just being arrogant is not going to take you to number 1 of anything, you need to have the gods to back up the arrogance.

Self belief is important to be successful at anything in life.

If you don't think of yourself as the best or think you can become the best might as well go home.

You have to be extremely confident to be no. 1. You have to not be in awe of any opponent and shouldnt care less about what youre opponent thinks of you. That easily leads to being perceived as arrogant

I think any world champion has to have inner confidence. There can call it arrogance I suppose but even if the player doesn't say it out loud you know they have the inner confidence. Laver for example has called Sampras, Federer, Hoad and others the greatest ever at times but he recently also said that with a wood racquet in his hands he would not fear anyone. Laver also said that in a Wimbledon final he would not think he would lose to anyone, even the ghost of Bill Tilden. And Laver is known for being modest but let's face it, if you're great, you know you're great.

Jack Nicklaus was known for his modesty but one time he took the lead in the final round of the British Open. Usually when he took the lead he generally kept it but this time he lost the lead and the tournament. He let slip that usually that happens to the others guys, not him.

You have to feel you can or even should win or else you've almost lost before you've begun. I've play in some competitions in which I've been the big favorite in an individual match and I can tell when my opponent is intimidated. When that happens I notice they tend to give up very early.

I am no Nadal fan but is Nadal arrogant?

Of course not. He's an extremely humble young man. That's why he's destined to retain the record for the most weeks at No. 2 ever while arrogant Federer and Djokovic rack up the big stays at No. 1.

I would say he is more confident than arrogant. He goes out there like he owns the place when he plays a match and that is how you have to be to be successful, like it or not.

Have you missed his numerous cocky on court celebrations??

Novak is arrogant but it helps him!!

Kanye West is arrogant. He thinks too much himself and his music.

Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic might be extremely confident about their tennis skills, but offcourt none of them act like narcissists.

But this guy is narcissist before and after the tennis match..

And when its time for someone else to celebrate...
....they aren't allowed.

I bet Rafa celebreated elsewhere..he was happy obviously. They were friendly enough...that Rafa felt Federer pain and conforted him.

Now if Federer cried in front of Rafa....I doubt Rafa would help him. The relationship looks bitter.

So, to oversimplify what Ivanisevic is saying.

Arrogance + Skill = Champion

Skill - Arrogance = Top Contender

Arrogance - Skill = Donald Young

Those equations are not set in stone. And the perceptions of who has arrogance and who has skill vary from fan to fan..

As much of a Fed fan that I am, the third picture cracked me up real bad. Roddick must be like, dafuq is he wearing!!

:)

Looking at that outfit you wonder who's really the father of his children:).

But that was a faux pas, everyone is entitled to one or two. At one point Federer was too much into celebrity lifestyle. Did he really need Anna Wintur and the annoying guys from that awful band Bush in his box. He has scaled back since. When you are successful it's very hard to detach yourself from that celebrity lifestyle.

There are many no.1 sportsmen who were not arrogant though. Confidence in your abilities and the ability to deal with stress are more important. Some of my favorite sportsmen like Sampras, Nadal, Iniesta, Xavi, Messi, Rijkaard and Zidane belong to the most successful in their sport but are not arrogant. Others like F. Alonso, Hamilton, Kobe Bryant and Lebron James do belong in the successful arrogant camp. What works for one doesn't work for the other.

I think the relationship is still there. Maybe only less warm after that player council conflict. Federer still supported Rafa to win RG after he went out.

As a Nadal fan Roger crying didn't bother me at all. We all know what it feels like if you put all your effort into something and it just doesn't succeed.

Yeah, how awful is that deal with some Poker game brand and those advs for Armani underwear? Oh wait, Federer is NOT the one endorsing those :)

1. Rod Laver was not arrogant. So, arrogance is not a requirement for being a Champion.
2. Federer is far more arrogant than Djokovic.

They are all lured by it. I never said Rafa was as a saint in this regard.

Nope.

One out of two, not bad. ;)

This just shows how arrogant Fed fans are...
In the recent history, Federer was (and is) the most arrogant player (and #1), and the most egoistic player on the Tour...like it or not. That is why I enjoy watching him getting spanked out there and this will become more frequent in the upcoming years...

Many champions are arrogant, but it's not necessary. Look at soccer: Ronaldo is huge and is super arrogant. Messi is huge as well, but he doesn't have that arrogance.
Same in tennis: Nadal is not arrogant, the swedish champions of the past were not arrogant (Borg, Wilander, Edberg). Many others are full of themselves, and it's a pity. It's very unpleasant.

i dont actually think Federer is real arrogant, coz hes such a confidence player

if he was truly so convinced of his superiority he wouldnt struggle so much when behind, or have such a mental block against nadz

guys on tour love him. That dont usually happen with the arrogant players, even if they are otherwise pretty nice and inoffensive guys (eg sampras).

Rod Laver not being arrogant is how all the Aussies were. They were great competitors, great sportsmen, and great human beings. They also trained together and were friends. The game has changed and the top players don't train together like the Aussies did.

I gotta say, I used to hate Fed because he was so arrogant. Loved his game, but couldn't get over how full of himself he was. The past few years though I think he's learned to be a lot more gracious and humble... I suppose age and having kids will do that. As far as the OP's question, I don't think it's necessary... just look at Nadal when he was #1 or some of the women that have been #1 (Woz, Ivanovic)... then again, they don't stay there long.

If Fed posed in Armani underwear he could be mistaken for Austin Powers and you gotta admit Rafa would make an awesome poker player with all the faces he pulls, you'd never get a read on him...

Didn't you know that typical ******* defence is find something Rafa has done. It's because they can't defend the character of their "hero" who is quite clearly up himself and not the role model themedia crack him up to be. Whenever he loses you see his true nature, that of a sook. I would love to see Murray beat Fed in the Wim final, this place would go into meltdown hahaha

To become a great champion in any sport, you must have confidence that borderlines arrogance. Even the nicest champions in the world had confidence that was brimming and could easily be misconstrued as arrogance. Most people however find it easier to just simply step over the line, thus you have various sportsmen that are arrogant.

People want to say Nadal isn't confident/arrogant when he steps out onto the court. That's a load of baloney if I ever heard it. His **** poor behavior during the Rosol match demonstrates that Nadal knows that he should be winning the match, but can't because he simply wasn't playing well enough.
