ATP – Toronto> Nadal: “I’m not at my best right now”

At a press conference in Canada, Rafa admitted that he will still have to wait before reaching a certain peak of form: “I come here to play the best I can and to keep improving after a few difficult months for different reasons. This is the reason why I am not in the best of my shape at the moment. But I also think I’m training better than I did in Washington, so I’m looking forward to doing well here and being able to compete satisfactorily. It is true that my foot annoys me sometimes more than I would like, but I need to find the good feeling with this foot. I need a few weeks with less pain to gain confidence in my movements. “

The build up events are important but not that important. The US Open is a completely different animal. On Ashe he will be pumped full of enough painkillers and adrenaline to play well.

I believe in Rafa gritting this one out. He's still my 2nd favorite at the USO unless he looks completely awful at Canada/Cincy, and even then wouldn't write him off.

You really give Rafa too much credit. I mean it’s possible but on current form and his foot problems he’s not 2nd favourite for us open.

I have just seen far too much greatness from him in the past. Am I crazy to believe a man tied with Djokovic on 20 Grand Slams is going to raise his game to fight for #21? He skipped Wimbledon to prepare for this. He may lose but I highly doubt his US Open form is going to look anything like the Washington form he’s shown.

Are you saying what I think you're saying?

Rafa will try for sure. He will throw everything at it. The problem is I’m just not sure his best is good enough anymore. Especially against Djokovic or the best next gen players like Zverev, medvedev or Tsitsipas. Then even other dark horses players like shaps, sinner, etc could trouble him.

A lot of nadals game has declined including his movement and stamina.

Nadal needs to step up his game in Canada, no excuses. There needs to be a visible improvement in his game. He has been resting and focusing on this part of the season ever since he was beaten at the hands of Djokovic in Paris.

His issue is that he needs to win his matches very swiftly, but on HCs he is more likely to be pulled into more dog fights. Lets see what he does in Canada.

Yeah true. This week is a big one for him. He needs to improve fast.

Of course not ;) but in 2021 if you want to play through pain, there are enough concoctions available to forget you have any pain whatsoever.

Opium ?

But Djokers injuries are so severe. I mean all those surgeries...

Hey there, don't you know you need to wait until the release of the behind-the-scenes documentary about Djokovic which is written, directed and produced by Serjan himself to get the real story about poor Novak's injuries?

:whistle::laughing:

I just want some competition lol, this year has been a complete snoozefest. The tour used to be so entertaining.

Code for....I just want Djokovic to lose, I don't care who does it, just beat him and stop him winning anymore slams. Also tour was entertaining when Nadal was winning the slams, #USOpen2019 #Wings #Slay #GetMySassOn #IWantToTrollNovakToDeath

The tour was entertaining when there was more than one thing going on :D im not even just talking about Djokovic, who is there to root for, and what comes to fruition by liking anyone? Any fool can see tennis used to be more entertaining than it is now, Djokovic fanboyism or not. I like you being this easily triggered though ;) those sunglasses have a lot of cracks in them lately  can't even enjoy this level of domination in peace, lmao

Triggered? I'm feeling sorry for you, your frustration has gotten the better of you. You talk about me enjoying the domination in peace, yet it was you yesterday who decided to have a go, when I just got back after taking some time off to do other stuff and tell me how boring Novak is. The irony of it all. I'm enjoying it all just fine...when was the last time you took a little break?

Tell me what we should all be so excited about if we care about anything but Novak Djokovic 8-B
You know I watch to be entertained, there has never been less going on in tennis. Ultronians love a dead tour as much as the man himself does

Its not like it can get better by playing more
Weird indeed
But it did get better by playing more, he said it hurt a lot after the Sock match but felt better after the Harris match.

He's won the three slams, outside of that, he hasn't done anything. Rome was epic. Shapvalov was impressive on clay and grass. Karatsev had a few classics, beat Novak in his back yard. Zverev winnning SOG. Plenty going on...but lets face it, until Novak doesn't lose at a slam, it simply sucks, right?

It sucks because we have 3 guys who should be retired by now beating up on a dead tour for about the 4th generation in a row. But let's face it, it's fine because your hero is winning right? :D it was fun for a while yes, but I've been saying as far back as 2017 that I'd like to see Thiem or someone else beat Nadal at the FO. Everything isn't about him and Djokovic, tennis needs to move forward. It's almost 2022, it's getting ridiculous at this point.

Don't you remember how I have been saying since RG 2016 after Novak won all four that as a fan I am fully content and even if he retired now, or doesn't win anything, I'm fine. Tennis will go on. Forgot that? Novak winning is great, but I as a tennis fan don't need him to win everything, especially now.

Sure new players need to win, I never said they didn't. But the big three have changed things, forever.

And I believe you, and you should know by now I am too and never expected Nadal to win 20 slams. I just miss when tennis felt magical, it's as stale as an episode of Raw and has been for a few years now tbh. Both ATP and WTA seriously need an injection of new stars actually doing something.

I stuck around for two years after that when Novak was going 6-6 for a season, just cheering him on, but understanding tennis waits for no man and even enjoyed Fedal revival. Him being on top doesn't impact my view of tennis, I love the sport and will always watch it. Plus I watch more of the younger guys now anyway.

Tennis will survive, trust in the process. You can't always enjoy what you see, but nothing lasts forever. I'll tell you this and you can hold me to this, as soon as one of the younger next gen wins a slam, the floodgates will open and you will be surprised how quickly the landscape will change. I already have my favs primed for the next few years here.

Well it needs to hurry up ;) I miss the feeling of someone breaking on the scene and doing big things. Like when I became a Rafa fan, and it's even why I liked Novak even for a while. It's been 13 years since a great player has come through now, it should never take this long :X3:

Happy to call it a day at 20-20-20 for good? No more for any of them? :)

Fed should have converted 40-15 lol, it should be 21-20-19 and I'd probably be ok with it staying there ;)

Did you see that Nadal interview that Spanish guy did with him, asking about his thoughts on 40-15 and if he wanted Novak to lose?
