Odd but Mathieu is actually a very well known player and has been around for ages. As for the 12th place he is right now it is his best ever ranking of course.

So Nadal cannot really make #1 till the Hardcourt season, assuming that Federer has a decent clay court season. But this is the best time for Djokovic to make inroads to the #2 spot.
You think Nadal can handle the pressure of defending all those points?

At this point two things are to be considered.

1 - The schedule is much tighter this year and to participate in all the tournaments he entered last year he will have to play back to back for a whole month. So 4 weeks = 4 tournamnts and 3 of those are master series ( Rome, MC, Hamburg ) while 4th is unofficialy the biggest clay court event other than those - Barcelona.

2 - His form suggests that he is way too consistant on hard courts he does not favour at all, there is absolutely no reason his results would be anything less than they were for the few previous years on clay/ he has no injuries, and is hungry to win titles this year.

Conclusion would be somewhere along the lines of him having a hard time defending the points because of schedule but being in good enough form to do it. Depends probably more than before on the guys he gets in the draw and how do they play. I wonder if Davydenko or Djokovic would be better suited for him ? Some things we can find out only if we wait long enough for them to happen.

unless Fed loses early in each clay court tournament.

Dont me so secure my man, its very possible for Nadal to pass Federer during the clay season, look at it this way, basically if they do almost exactly what they did last year before the French then nadal again wins it and Federer loses early there it is, Nadal number won, and that not even considering any results before that....and as for Nadal defending those points, I guess you don't remember last year, same situation, and yes Id say he did a pretty good job under pressure then, no reason to believe this year is any different, I am sorry, you are witnessing the fall of Federer

how is Mathieu 12? what tournaments did he do well in last year. i mean hes on of my favorite players, but i was under the impression that he didn't do too well

Defending points is a stupid rule that needs to be changed. Tournaments should be worth a certain amount of points and thats it.

There is no rule about defending points, it's just a phrase that used to say if you don't do well this week, you will drop like a stone. Points are good for 52 weeks, when they come off, they come off.
