Aurellian charity match challenge

OrangePower

Legend
Aurellian has described his playing style and level in various threads, and has indicated willingness to play against other TT'ers, record the match, and post it for us to see.

I think that would be fun and educational. So I'm prepared to put up $50 to go into a charity pool, if such a match can be made to happen. Perhaps other TT members are also willing to make a contribution? Then the winner of the match gets to decide which major charity the pool goes to.

Conditions:

* Aurellian's opponent must be a computer-rated 4.0, and must be willing to share his name so that we can look up his tennislink record. This is so that we can understand the results of the match in context.

* The entire match must be recorded and posted online. Faces can be blurred if desired.

* The match must take place and the recording posted by the end of 2014.

If you are willing to volunteer to be Aurellian's opponent, or are willing to contribute to the pool, let us know in this thread!

Before you get too far over your skis or put someone else there, you may want to ask Aurellian why he abruptly stopped playing league two years ago and hasn't played a league match since then. I've tried to be kind thus far, but his posting history should give you some indication that, as in the words of Hamlet, all is not well.

I don't have a dog in this fight - I just think it would be cool to have a match between two TT'ers recorded so that the rest of us can be armchair quarterbacks about it :)

And if as a by-product we (TT'ers) end up with a pool to donate to a good cause, that's a good thing also.

If Aurellian has the will and wherewithal to make this happen, great, and if not, no biggie.

I get what you're saying, and frankly, I wish I could be more direct about what I'm implying regarding the league absence. Interesting you used the word "fight" though. Maybe Aurellian will come in and clarify why I've heard he hasn't been allowed to play leagues the last two years.

If you're ever in San Diego, I'd be more than happy to play you and record it for TT. IIRC, you're a 4.5 as well. That would be a far more valuable and productive charity event.

I'll do it. I currently play at a high 4.5/low 5.0 level. I don't mind sharing my name if it becomes necessary.

In my prime I was 5.0, I would be down to play.

In that vein, I think it'd be better to get a NorCal/SoCal Talk Tennis Posters Charity Tourney. Pair up each NTRP division, in a singles/doubles format, meet somewhere in the middle (say Tennis Warehouse's home court(s) in SLO?), and throw up the video highlights for all to see. We have enough colorful personalities from those areas--Maxima, LeeD (he can hitch a ride with someone), Cheetah, etc.--and we could all throw in an "entry fee" to be donated to charity.

That would be bad a$s, and I'd consider my entry fee a small cost to pay to meet LeeD in person.

No problem, but it's less than a memorable experience to meet me and hit with or against me.
President has, Shroud has, RobFL has, of the guys still posting on here.
Matt and I plan to hit on Sept14 or so, I don't remember which.

I took a TDY out of area and quit playing tennis for a bit. My shoulder was hurting from improper serve technique.

Are you really that scared to be beaten that you now make vague references filled with thinly veiled ad hominem attacks?

As a gesture of good faith, what can I do to placate your concerns? I am a super friendly guy and like to make any opponent feel comfortable.

It's a tennis match...what do you think I will do, bite your head off? LOL. Never believe all of what you hear. You should know better, mate.

That's odd, in an earlier thread (since deleted, but still cached in google), you said this:

Aurellian said:
being perceived as a little edgy has many benefits in life..including on the tennis court.

I have mind boned two opponents into quitting mid tournament while a ref was on the court!

Not really consistent with your current self-portrayal.

By the way I like the Rumsfeld picture, very snazzy suit.

Depends on if I like you or not:)

You mean the pic of me staffing the Secretary? yeah, that was a while ago.

Pres W. and Secretary Rice once both referred to me as the "snazzy dresser" on a VTC.

can't say I am at that level now. That's the problem with political jobs if you are young and don't have an established patron saint looking out for you. When it's over it's over.

Not a slow decline like James Blake or Roger experience....like playing in the US Open one year and the next playing in an Open Draw for 300 bucks at a Seattle public park.

Going on silly reality shows and starting fights on online tennis forums does not bode well for Aurellian.

I guess I should tone it down.

A am indeed a legit, bone fide, decidedly-middle-of-the-pack, computer rated 4.5.

If I find myself planning a trip to SD I will keep your invitation in mind.

However we will definitely not be recording it for TT - trust me, nothing particularly pretty about either me or my game ;-)

That's a very pretty area. Cali has good tennis. I would love to play with you but not sure the logistics will work.

Do you plan on doing Vegas anytime soon?

I don't, but I'm due for a trip eventually. It would be nice to go knowing I have a match to play... keep me from getting ****faced.

You at it again?
My $100 are still open for that serve video you promised, even if we both paid up already.

Anyway, ill throw my $50 in the hat.

Sounds fun.

And I want to see that Rumsfeld Picture, what have I been missing?

I'll have to remember to send you a message when I plan on heading to SD next summer, 4.5C here but probably not a good thing to record my game :)

Yes Sir.
Hard to stay out of it.

I attract it like from the masses like a convoy of Talib traveling in the open in technicals does a reaper drone:)

The older fellow and I would be a good match but mom and I are fighting about my reality tv shoot so no visiting mom in Boulder anytime soon.

I am a 3.5 and late October is too far in the future. My country may need me to solve some pressing issues in the near future.....I need to keep you safe in your lil Suburban enclave so you can be the cubicle warrior you always wanted to be and make your 3.5 League match on Sunday.

I'll play and live near Aurellian in Denver Area. I'm 63 years old and self rated 4.5 but might be considered 4.0 in some USTA leagues..email me comeback@safe-mail.net

Good late morning Sir. I would love to play you and feel that our styles would provide an excellent contrast.

The only issue is that I will not be home in Colorado anytime soon.

I will be in LV and the DC metro area for the next month or so.

Maybe we can meet in St. George, Utah? I know a former Hooters girl that recently moved there that has been blowing up my phone.

But please leave your ol lady back home in Cherry Creek because the Hooters girls has a sister..lil old for me...but she will have you singing 18 forever like it was '69 and Nam was winding down.

Absolutely. I split time between San Diego and Las Vegas, but if you give me enough notice, I can usually arrange my schedule to be in SD. I'm under no delusion that I'm a great 4.5; just played my first year at that level in fact. But I can run, and I have a pretty decent all court game.

Indeed. If he's only half as whacked as he seems in his posts, then perhaps it's prudent to avoid any financial arrangements in which he's involved.

More whacked in real life--but it's situational dependent--I do play it up a bit and relish my time away from the flag pole in LV but yea mate, you'd likely be intimidated by me (if wanted it this way) in the locker-room at the county club.

Look at how Velvet switched from "you are not good enough to play me" to "Aurellian might jump over the net and tickle a tear out of me."

I am good for next Friday or Saturday.

Let's do it, Sir.

I will use miles & hotel points and come to you if you want. Although the mile high city will give you a distinct advantage.

Logistics:

Can you arrange a decent court?

How will we film it?

I'm all in.

Don't you have some chiropractors to depose?

Thanks for the clarification. I think you are lacking something downstairs and in the chest.

We can play at my club or your's. I sincerely extend an olive branch to you.

As many men as you feel you need to feel comfy you can bring...just please no ladies cheering my copious amounts of unforced errors. That really gets under my skin.

Whatever you need me to do to make you feel comfortable and at ease I will do for you.

Brooklyn is home, but currently trying to navigate the beautiful city of Bangalore, India.

I am happy to play when I am back in the land of Free Trade Coffee and Chocolate made without electricity.

But I am under no illusion over my own tennis, 4 rotator cuff surgeries have left me with an underhand serve and no overhead game whatsoever.
Marlboro's and Ardbeg Corryvreckan have taken care of the rest of my body.
When on I can play 3.5 but thats all she wrote for me.

Had my share of competition in life, used to be a Decathlete so have occasional flashes of athleticism, fewer and farer in between as time passes.
Pink Floyd said it best :

Even though your post are off the wall mostly I think I would enjoy Scotch and Cigars more than Tennis when I meet you.

BK is a real city/borough. Spent some time in the City but wasn't into tennis back then. The cost of private courts there are outrageous. I heard there was a legend on the tennis courts there that would hustle the pros for $$$ in the 80s. I guess it would be akin to park basketball players beating NBA players in one on one.

India is a tough nut to crack, although you can have an army of servants for like 38 bucks a week.

I had a strange experience in India when on R&R at the JW in Mumbai...not suitable for the kids so I will have to tell that tale over some JW Gold and a stoogie when we link up.

What would be interesting is to equate national character with tennis style.

being a decathlete is no joke. I ran a little track in college and have great respect for those competitors.

Enjoy India and watch what you eat.

You need to identify and exploit any advantage one has in life. The ability to remove an opponent from his comfort zone certainly pays dividends.

Image and reputation are to be cultivated and strategically managed.

Many athletes and public figures cultivate personas for competitive advantage.

Looks like you better just focus on the 3.5 division for a while. Going down 3 and 4 tonight to a guy who just got bumped up from 3.0 after playing there since 2009?

What was it tonight? A rolled ankle like last time you lost to him? A long Thursday night at XS partying with "beautiful Slavic women"? Not enough cool towels from the tournament coordinator? Your intimidation strutting (which I've heard is hilarious BTW) not working on him?

And you want to play against 4.5s?

Looking forward to seeing it. Experience vs brashness. I'd have to go with the former. No offense Aurellian.

I'm still in for $50 for the winner to designate to a charity of choice.

I thought everyone knew who Aurellian was. He's not tough to find in TennisLink.

And yes, it happened. I wish I would have been in Vegas this week to witness. Alas, Aurellian's opponent must have summoned an effort straight from the Gods themselves to fend off those 130-MPH bombs.
