If this were a 17 year old high school girl and her coach was caught on video doing this, he would have to apologize and resign. But somehow it's okay here. Keep in mind she's a minor.

I am NOT sure I understand.
The coach said "Grow up"
Is it morally wrong?

Good video.
"People have been playing on grass courts 150 years. This court is perfect"

Wish I had a coach like that back then.

LOL, I like it.

I think her coach did great. she was almost crying and complaining and the coach took that away from her and forced her to focus on tennis again and not the court.

That would depend on the high school, but this is Pro Tennis where there is money and points on the line. No time for hand holding. :p
Good video.

Back when you were a 17 year old girl playing on WTA?

The best part about this is that he didn't scream it at her. He just said grow up in a quiet voice and you could tell she was really thinking about what he said.

Really smart coaching from this guy. He took her attention off the court (which is not what she should be thinking about) and focused it on the game (which is what she should be thinking about). Yes, it was a little harsh but it did the trick (even though she still eventually lost, she played better).

Haha. I'm sold - on court coaching on the ATP please (just kidding).

I think that's marvelous. I love the look on her face. She's every inch a sullen, resentful pouting teenager but deep down she knows he's right.

Good coach!

How did she do after this?

There's your answer. In the above quote.

Where does Felgate a guy who turned to coaching because he wasn't good enough to make it as a player get off talking to a minor like that.

BIRMINGHAM, England — Croatian teenager Donna Vekic reached her second career WTA final when she beat 2009 champion Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-3 in the Aegon Classic on Saturday.

In the final, she'll face Daniela Hantuchova in the final Sunday of the grass-court tournament. Hantuchova defeated Alison Riske of the United States 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in the other semifinal.

Riske had to play twice on Saturday, finishing off a three-set quarterfinal win over 2011 champ Sabine Lisicki of Germany after it was stopped at 2-2 in the third on Friday because of darkness.

Vekic, who turns 17 in two weeks, also beat Rybarikova en route to her first final in September in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. That was the last time she passed the second round until this week.

Hantuchova, the runner-up in 2011, will aim for her sixth title.

Because in sports many mediocre players go on to become very successful coaches.

Ever heard of Scotty Bowman?

Talk to her like what? What did he say wrong? Are we really so sensitive in a society now that we can't even tell a whining teenager to "grow up and stop *****ing about something?"

Sorry, your attitude is a US thing...you know, here in the states where we treat kids like little pussies, award bad behavior, and they don't ever grow up and end up wasting money in college only to come back and leech off of their parents for years. You know, the country where we drug them up at the moment they complain about having those pesky things called real emotions, or trouble "concentrating", or we give them a conveinant excuse...errr...I mean "diagnosis" like ADD or Hyper active...to hide behind....PLEASE!!! LOL.

Donna Vekic I guarantee is more adult like and mature than half the American 21 year olds, she left her home country of Croatia to pursue a career for Christ Sake..I think she can handle a little swearing...and a lot of it has to do with being TREATED LIKE AN ADULT!

Listen again..she set the tone.."Courts are F#cking wet"..coach just rolled with the attitude given to him...THIS IS REFRESHING...not to be condemned.

I'm American saying this BTW...so ashamed of what a bunch of coddling blow hards we've become. Wake up people. look at the new trend in higher education at all levels across the US...ATTRACTING THE BETTER PREPARED FOREIGN STUDENT!!!!! Go walk the UC Berkley Campus and tell me you don't feel like you are in ASIA!!!

I agree with your entire post except for the bold part. Increased awareness for mental issues is a GOOD thing. It means some people who legitimately struggle with certain basic practices are understood better instead of being treated like idiots. I don't agree with "drugging" people up and agree that that's a bit overdone, but the more sincere attitude towards some of the mental issues that people can't control and actually have to deal with is welcome, in my opinion.

That's like saying that it's wrong for Toni Nadal to berate Nadal when he's playing like an idiot, for the same reasons you've just given. And we all know how effective of a coach Toni Nadal is.

I think you misunderstood the point. The point was that in USA, coaches often come under the gun for using tough love, becasue the proliferation of media coverage of such events coupled with a larger sense of entitlement in today's generations means you can't get away with this anymore.

It's unfortunate, because it raises a bunch of wimpy children who can't handle being talked down to.

Should have been more clear, all apologies. I actually feel that the majority of people are over prescribed medication, and use it as a "crutch" rather than deal with real life...and THOSE PEOPLE..do a major disservice to the part of the population who really needs help, and may be afraid to come forward because of the stigma associated with the abusers of the system.

Mental illness certainly no laughing matter, just can't stand the overly "coddled" and pampered society we seem to be raising.

Example...my buddy is a college professor...COLLEGE...and he said 20 years ago STUDENTS argued their grades with him..now PARENTS do...PITIFUL!!!!!! GROW UP!!

AGREED!!! Thought you were chastising this coach for not being "sensitive"...LOL

Donna's awesome, and a little bit fiery, I'm sure her and this guy go at it all the time...dropping "Eff Bombs"!

Usually people who tell stories like that about how great the old times were are the losers who will not be able to make it today if they were starting out.

20 years ago professors might have been blatantly scoring women and minorities lower than others. Today, the parents are not going to back down and take it, among other things.

It is very revealing how older people perceive college admission standards. Those who don't have any kids going to college (never had or had long time ago) will pontificate about falling standards and tell some tall stories about students admitted to college cannot multiply. Those who do will say how incredibly difficult it is to get into college and how their kid studied stuff they have never heard about.

Bottomline is most people cannot separate an ego trip from reality.

Well, this line proves my point!!!!!

"Today, the parents are not going to back down and take it, among other things."

YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT BRO!!! WHY THE HELL ARE THE PARENTS FIGHTING THEIR KIDS BATTLES????? LET THEM ***** GROW UP!!!!

I PAID for my own education, and let me tell you something...even if my parents could afford it they would NEVER get involved in my affairs...they FULLY EXPECTED ME TO ACT LIKE AN ADULT ONCE I GRADUATED HS!!!

Do you come from one of those cultures where you are treated like a little boy until your arranged marriage...the kind where parents make decisions for you into your late 20's? If so then I understand.

Admissions standards, discriminatory grading, etc...real..yes...besides the point...yes! Those are all real issues the STUDENT to fight against.

My original point (which since I've discovered the poster actually agreed with me) is that their is nothing wrong with the way Donna was spoken to by her coach...anything less is treating her like your typical American treats their privileged brats....and that breeds reliance on parent well past an age where it stops seeming cute and crosses into sad.

I'd like to see an example of a US coach saying "toughen up" and coming under the gun for it.

Minors are usually idiotic, so I don't see a problem with the coach criticizing her. Coaches criticize players all the time in high school basketball. I've seen coaches far tougher than that.
