Ball soaked from shorts

I sweat so much that my shorts get drenched and soak the ball when it sits in my pocket. I actually had an opponent notice that the ball was wet and asked if it was from my shorts. It was embarrassing. Has this happened to anyone, and what is the remedy?

What kind of shorts do you wear? Try wearing some compression shorts and dri-fit type bottoms.

Andy's not the only guy that sweats a lot on court. It's funny that most men carry towels on court, where most women don't.

I wonder what the ball boy's thinking while holding on to Andy's towel during the match?

There is one player that I can not play with because he perspire so much all over that his short, shirts, arms, hands are drenched very quickly.

He is a very good player but his games has evolved around playing with sweaty balls. The balls becomes moist/damp and they stay that way. His hands are completely wet, his shorts are drenched and when he puts the balls in his pockets, they just soak up the sweat.

It was pretty disgusting to hit with him that I dreaded the hand shake. Sadly, it was the last time I hit with him because I was getting grossed out knowing that I'm handling balls soaked with his sweat from his groin area.

I wonder how many people feel the same way about playing with me.

This thread reminds me of that AXE commercial where the guy is just spraying from his pits.

Raiden, do you sweat more when it's hot and less than it's cold?

^^^That's normal, who doesn't?

Maybe you should bring a towel with you, and towel off on switches. If that helps.

I always have towels. I can't towel off my shorts though. Most people I play with can wear cotton shirts and have only a little bit of sweat even on a hot day, so obviously my sweating far exceeds the norm.

wow... how badly soaked are they?

they should be dry like after a few hits eh?

You're making it sound as if the balls were fresh from a pail of water

I take it none of you live in South Florida. I don't care who you are, after an hour & a half of playing athletic tennis in the summer months down here, your shorts are soaked. End of discussion. If they're not, you're probably a 3.0 player or so. Once the shirt is soaked, the sweat trickles down to the shorts and even if you change shirts regularly, before you know it your shorts are soaked and you're squishing around in your shoes. Playing tournaments is very difficult down here in the summer time. People are defaulting their second and third matches all the time due to cramping... you just can't keep the fluids in.

Most of the guys I play with just happen to have one handed backhands, so as a last resort they can hold the second ball in their hand when the shorts get too wet. Two handers gotta figure something else out.

I have another idea, if you do not want to use the ball clip (which is what makes more sense to me), you could also play with 6~9 balls and be very carefull on rotate them so while you have one in your pocket getting wet the others are laying around drying.

Again, in my experience the best thing to do is the ball clip. I sweat so much ... the funny thing is that usually the ball on your pocket is for the second serve, in my case a topspin serve, so when I hit it with the ball soaked you can see how the ball start to "spray" all the sweat after I hit my second serve. I used to leave the second ball on the ground but I kept thinking about on the point.

Joke about this problem but saw guys open a new can of balls due to the old balls being fluffed up and wet. Gotta get those balls outa your pocket. Btw, personally wear two pr of shorts so I can change on-court.

I sweat like this too. I seriously can't keep balls in my pocket because on humid days I feel it is unfair to the opponent. The balls having any wetness at all to me is not right.

The wierd thing is that my body fat % is under 10 and I am in real good shape. If I play light and don't go all out, I am fine. But if I am playing on a humid day, forget it.

I will put it like this. When I sit down, my shorts drip water. My shoes can get wet and slosh water. It's Roddick level sweating, there is no doubt about it.

I think the compression shorts is a good idea though. Is there anywhere you can get good deals on those? I am a fan of them in general, and that would probably help a lot. I wear Nike dry fit whenever I can.

Would compression shorts worn underneath my outer shorts actually reduce the sweatiness of my outer shorts? I can't figure out if the sweat is from dripping down my torso and t-shirt, or if it comes from my skin underneath my shorts.

Wore compression shorts, kept my tennis shorts reasonably dry but the sweat streamed down my leg. So disconcerting I quit playing, thought something was wrong.

Why not hold the 2nd ball in your hand too, and if you get your 1st serve in throw the other one away behind you?

I always use Nike Dri Fit compression shorts, ball still get wet.

Tennis Court Confessions

I sweat early and often. Buckets, especially in the head and chest/shoulders. Rafa/Sampras/Roddick/Rafter proportions. Muhammad Ali evenn.

I feel my lower body sweats a LOT less (Federer/Stich). So my shorts don't really get soaked until the shirt's trickle down effect takes over.

I usually change shirts in time, though....before things get bad for the ball.

When I have not changed shirts, my shorts get wet, then my socks do, too. This is trouble. I avoid this.

What's nice about tennis is that you get to drink and towel off and take 90 seconds off after every few games.

^^ In addition to slice's well documented confessions, leaving nothing to imagination, after the socks my shoes get squishy/sloshy and then the court baseline gets puddles.

on topic, i stop putting balls in my shorts when my shorts get drenched.

I'm in the same boat as the OP and a few others here. Simply ridiculous amounts of sweat in the Texas humidity.

Using compression shorts rather than regular underwear has been the biggest benefit but still not perfect. After a certain point, I just kick the balls that would be in my pocket to the back fence (if you're not in a tournament, this should be OK), but with dri-fit shorts or the equivalent and compression unders, the balls stay mostly dry except on particularly bad days.

My only solution to the shoe slosh, which I also have as my legs turn into Niagra Falls, is to bring multiple pairs of shoes and socks. The only thing that slows that down are wearing crew socks (not ankle) and if I happen to be wearing patella straps, that seems to keep the shoes dry for at least an extra hour. Gives you funny tan lines, though.

And, of course, multiple cans of balls to rotate in play.

Not to get off topic, but if you do that regularily (throwing the ball behind you if the first serve is in), your opponent can call a hinderance. Of course if it is just a match amongst friends that is different, but still could be a point of discussion.

The large sweat bands (wrist ones) help a lot in keeping sweat from gushing onto the hand and handle and ball.

I am wondering why not create LINED pockets (lined with plastic or some waterproof material) so that the balls don't get soaked in groin sweat (haha).

Groin sweat on balls should not be an issue in mixed singles or dubs, anyone care to comment on that ? I hope mono can't get transmitted like that ;-)

Next time you play try carrying this product in your pocket, http://doesmommyloveit.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/diapersackbig.jpg May keep your balls dry.

But yeah I know a lot of guys that use ball clips. Most of them use clips because they prefer no-pocket basketball shorts. People always have something to say about the clips. Then they see how good they are and STFU.

Its either that or soggy tennis balls!

Who knows, check the patents. It is probably a common problem too. Maybe a rep reading these forums will see this thread and next season some apparel company starts making them.

Great call. That helps me too. Nothing like a good, fresh wristband in the summer. Helps with the sweat in the ocular cavity, too.

LOL, way better than LINING the groin section of the underwear, ahaha!

Groin sweat in mixed dubs? That's nothing but trouble. Class One aphrodisiac! ;-)

Have old shorts that have the pockets lined with terrycloth. Know players that hang a folded towel over their shorts. But the sweathogs just do nothing about the wet balls. Especially on clay. Dirty, sweat soaked balls.

I live in South Florida and go play tennis at 8am in the morning til sometimes 12 and I do a sh*t load of running. My shorts and shirt get soaked but it doesn't get out of hand to soaking the ball. I've never had problems with a wet ball.

Saw a guy pour sweat from his shoes and he wore mesh. The balls these guys were using looked like they were rolled through a puddle. Maybe a fanny pack can solve this and and other on-court problems. http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_plank/handgun-fanny-pack.jpg

I for one have held his towel as a ball boy..... not the greatest feeling ever because it feels like someone dipped it in a bathtub and hands it to you. haha
