It is quite sad that Canadian teams are finding it harder and harder to even make the playoffs while other teams in states like Florida and Cali (Tampa, LA, San Jose, Anaheim) have been blessed with some great teams over the years, especially since hockey is often in the backseat of activities/things to do there.I see someone else found the last time, 25 years ago by the Habs. Sad that a team from a state that never gets ice of any magnitude (Florida) has a more recent Cup than the Great White North contingents.
Based off last year's improvement by the current Oilers, I was expecting they would be rounding into contenders for the next few years but they nosedived this year. Winnipeg jetted past them and have flashes of brilliance but losing twice at home hurt. Game 7 on the road now and then, even if they steal another in Smashville, that team of destiny in Sin City and the Tampa/Washington winner? That's a tough road to The Cup. I see a Smashville/Washington final as most likely.
As for this years playoffs, I honestly still have no clue whos the favorite to win (which is why I love the NHL playoffs so much). I want to cheer for Washington just so Ovi can silence all his critics by hoisting a cup, but tbh I have no clue how Washington will turn up next round since the ECF is foreign land for the Caps. We're either going to see a Caps team that explodes against Tampa after exercising their Penguins demons, or a Caps team that gets brought back to earth by a loaded Lightning squad; can't really see anything else in between for the Caps.
Seeing Vegas win the cup would be the ultimate Cinderella story and it 100% has to be a future 30 for 30 episode. But I agree, the Jets really screwed up by losing at home in game 6 as now they have to go back to arguably the loudest building in the league and try to steal game 7 there. If I had to make a prediction I'd say Nashville vs Tampa, but the finals I really want to see is Vegas vs Washington, with Winnipeg vs Washington being the second option.
