Battle for King of the North - Shapo vs Milos

I see someone else found the last time, 25 years ago by the Habs. Sad that a team from a state that never gets ice of any magnitude (Florida) has a more recent Cup than the Great White North contingents.

Based off last year's improvement by the current Oilers, I was expecting they would be rounding into contenders for the next few years but they nosedived this year. Winnipeg jetted past them and have flashes of brilliance but losing twice at home hurt. Game 7 on the road now and then, even if they steal another in Smashville, that team of destiny in Sin City and the Tampa/Washington winner? That's a tough road to The Cup. I see a Smashville/Washington final as most likely.
It is quite sad that Canadian teams are finding it harder and harder to even make the playoffs while other teams in states like Florida and Cali (Tampa, LA, San Jose, Anaheim) have been blessed with some great teams over the years, especially since hockey is often in the backseat of activities/things to do there.

As for this years playoffs, I honestly still have no clue whos the favorite to win (which is why I love the NHL playoffs so much). I want to cheer for Washington just so Ovi can silence all his critics by hoisting a cup, but tbh I have no clue how Washington will turn up next round since the ECF is foreign land for the Caps. We're either going to see a Caps team that explodes against Tampa after exercising their Penguins demons, or a Caps team that gets brought back to earth by a loaded Lightning squad; can't really see anything else in between for the Caps.

Seeing Vegas win the cup would be the ultimate Cinderella story and it 100% has to be a future 30 for 30 episode. But I agree, the Jets really screwed up by losing at home in game 6 as now they have to go back to arguably the loudest building in the league and try to steal game 7 there. If I had to make a prediction I'd say Nashville vs Tampa, but the finals I really want to see is Vegas vs Washington, with Winnipeg vs Washington being the second option.

@cc0509 surprised you've not weighed in on this epic match?:D

I did. I said I haven't watched Shapo or Raonic lately so I can't be sure but I think Raonic should win this match.

I was wrong about Edmund vs Djokovic as I thought Djokovic would win that match so, what do I know?

I miss when Raonic was making progress and looked like he might be a contender for slams when the Big 4 finally retire. His injuries have been ridiculous and it just looks like the passion for tennis has left him. Shap looking good so far tho, i just wish Raonic could actually rediscover that form he found for a few years.

I feel a little humbled now in rooting against Milo's in reading this article and the gracious things Milo's has to say about Shapo, truly a class act.

‘He’s very athletic on his own, a lot of talent as well. I thought the thing I was most impressed with was how consistent he was with that the whole way through.

‘I tried my best. I wish I could have done a few things better but I tried my best.

‘It’s a very positive week for me here in Madrid because I was in a little bit of a hole the last 15 days but I’m happy with this and it gives me something to work off.’

Wow, I just looked at the match scores. I didn't see it. What happened? Was Shapovalov too good, was Raonic terrible, or a combo of both?

Good for Shapovalov! He's one of the only younger players I can stand to watch meaning I actually like his game and it doesn't bore me to tears. He has that X factor too which so many players lack.

I'm glad your faith was restored. I sensed a slight pulling away from the flock a few months ago. Welcome back to the fold. ;)

@gogo Props to you for posting here about Shapo years who when nobody had even heard of him. You were touting Denis even when he was a junior!:)

Keep your expectations a bit low my friend. He is not going to achieve the same success as fed acheived. That is sure.

Obviously that's for sure. I don't think anyone (even Shapo and his mom) expect him to get anywhere near 20 slams. But I hope and believe Shapo can win 4 or 5, possibly more, depending on how Zverev and his other contemporaries develop. If nobody else of his generation steps up, he could clean up in majors, but will never get anywhere near Roger's records. Just hoping Denis stays healthy, modest and keeps moving up the rankings.

I may have been early on identifying him but I didn't have the technical tennis knowledge to know if what I was seeing was valid, so I wasn't as prescient as I would like to take credit for. @stringertom, much more knowledgeable than I, helped confirm my suspicions and even saw him in person to 'seal the deal'. Of course just because someone is great in juniors doesn't necessarily translate to success on the Tour.

Another one to keep an eye out for is Nicola Kuhn (played for Germany against Felix and Denis in Junior Davis Cup the year they won, but plays for Spain now). Everyone was watching Felix, but both Denis and Nicola were stellar in the tournament. Check him out.

Miomir Kecmanovic is the one who clued me into Kuhn's potential that week two years ago that I met both Kec and Shapo and just a couple days after they played an epic clay title match at the Orange Park Futures in 2016.

Wow, impressive display from Shapovalov for sure. Return as a standalone shot was great, much more so than I expected it to be. The rest of his game was brilliant as well. Milos movement still looks somewhat sub-par, I'm sure it'll improve over the next few months though...
