Best set of tennis played in 2019

Those sets were more climatic and entertaining given the circumstances. However in terms of shot making and rallying Theim/Rafa was higher. Patrick McEnroe said on Mad Dog radio it was some of the highest quality tennis he’d ever seen.

First set of the RG 2019 final. Thiem looked like the reencarnation of Borg for a set, running for every single ball, with rallies of over 10 shots and high intensity and power in the shots. Obviously, it is unhuman to maintain that level of intensity for the whole match, so the rest of the match was not as majestic.

Best set on clay since RG 2013 by far. Arguably one of the top 15 sets on clay ever.

I agree. Nadal v Thiem first set was the best set of tennis I have seen this year. Great stuff from both.

RG final was truly entertaining in the first two sets, they were top quality as far as I could tell. Nadal was good throughout, but anyone with eyes could tell Thiem was empty.

I thought Federer played some good sets against Djokovic in the W final apart from the tiebreaks. I felt sorry for the old man. Thought he deserved that one.

Why RG final 1st set is overrated is beyond me.
It was the same story. Opponent takes advantage of Rafa starting a bit slower, gets the break; which then triggers Rafa and he proceeds to sweep the set in style. Happens countless times on clay

Exact same set I was thinking of before I clicked on the thread. In fact, I downloaded the match and watched the first set yesterday. Almost every single rally was great. Unfortunately, neither man played as good a set after it.

Where did you download it?

Rafa fended off Federer year-after-year, then Djokovic year-after-year (except 2015), the same is now happening to Thiem. It is incredible how Nadal has repelled three generations of challengers and is still at the top of the mountain.
Nadal is the Clay.
You can't defeat clay on clay unless you grind yourself completely in clay, which in turn is actually a moral win for clay

In 2018, Dominic won a total of 9 games in the FO final. In 2019, he won 12 games. At this ratio, he's on track to win a total of 15 games in the 2020 FO final.
As long as Dominic Thiem is the opponent waiting in the final, rafa has RG secured in his pocket.
The guy has the game to take down rafa, but severely lacks killer instinct

In 2017 against Nadal at the French Open, Thiem won 7 total games and was bageled in set three.

At this ratio, he's on track to win a total of 15 games in the 2020 FO final if he faces Rafa.
Scary stuff (srs)

why are you so unfair to Dominic?

between 2017 and 2018, he’s improved by two games. the year after that, he’s improved by another three. it’s only logical that in 2020 he’ll improve even further and add four more games!

He's just not good enough and is a mental midget when facing Nadal. He's never winning RG as long as he has to go through Rafa. Even if he faced someone like Gasquet in the RG final I wouldn't expect him to win.
He's good enough but has to hold his s**t together, I mean it's not peak or prime rafa after all, and domi has shown he can best him in BO3 matches, so he has the game. But apart from once (where fed mugged it up), domi is a midget when it comes to the finals of Masters or slam..
if 23-26 yo rog had this version of rafa to take down at RG, he would have done it every single time.

You know, this really worries me that you said this, because your predictions usually turn out wrong.

In your dreams maybe.

Let’s be honest.

No man alive or dead, active or retired has the game to take on in form Nadal at RG, the two times he lost he was far below his normal level, let alone his in form level.

God can come down to play Nadal at Philippe Chatrier and God himself would lose.

I think we forget what Domi had to do the day before to get to RG final.

Mental midget? Maybe 2 years ago. His results have proven otherwise this year:
1-1 H2H v 'Dal
2-1 H2H v Novak (he beat Novak on clay AND hardcourt)
3-0 H2H v Fed (2 hard, 1 clay)

That's 6-2 H2H over the big 3.
