I have to give Lendl the nod for the '80's. Lendl and McEnroe won 3 Us Opens in the 1980's. But Lendl was in more finals. He was in four finals he lost the Open - '82, '83, '88, and '89. That gives a total of 7 Us open finals Lendl was in. thats 70% of all the Open finals in the '80's. As for McEnroe he was only in one final he lost the '85 Open. Mcenroe has a grand total of 4 Us open finals, only giving him 40% of the total Us opens in the '80's. So Lendl is defintely the better Us Open player in the '80's.
Subjectively here's my champions in their best years.
1924 Bill Tilden for 1920's.
1932 Ellsworth Vines for 1930's
1947 Jack Kramer
1952 Frank Sedgman
1969 Rod Laver
1970's is tough because Newcombe didn't have a great year overall in 1973 despite winning two majors but I saw him in that tournament and he was so dominant in the later rounds, defeating a very powerful Jimmy Connors in straight sets along the way but despite that I suppose I will pick Connors in 1978. Connors was near his peak but I still believe Borg would have won if he wasn't hurt that year.
1984 John McEnroe
1995 Pete Sampras
2004 Roger Federer
My choices are who I think were the best champions in that one year for the decade.
Yeah it is hard to imagine Borg beating Connors at Wimbledon in 1976. 1977 was the first year Borg even began to challenge Connors head to head.
from what I've seen of the '76 match, [parts of sets, the tiebreak, end of final set] it was a thriller...perhaps Jimmy's best match...a win over Bjorn, on clay, somehow raises it up a notch...
tho', I always found the 82 final against Lendl pretty compelling...
have only seen tidbits of '78...seemed like Jimmy was hot, Bjorn was overwhelmed & hurt, which clearly did not help
