Bianca Andreescu!

Let's call a spade a spade, people here love to denigrate Serena.

What is this? I thought the old Soviet Union went out of business. Apparently contrary opinions to yours are not to be allowed.
I said the crowd was on Serena's side (clearly a self evident claim if you watched the match) and after going O for four in her last four finals
getting another slam title now amounts to a growing mental hurdle.
This is not "denigrating" Serena. There are called common sense observations. Sorry your knickers got twisted up. You also could relax and breathe some more.

I've recently been watching a young player from Canada named Bianca Andreescu, who just broke into the top 100.

She's amazing. GREAT athlete, solid strokes, decent serve for 5' 7", positive attitude (for the most part lol).

How far do you guys think she can go?

I'm thinking she could win a couple slams in her career if she keeps improving.

Great call !

Did anyone watch Bianca's matches this fortnight?
Is she the real deal? Or was this a fluke?
How were her other matches?
She's been solid all the way. She's a little streaky (throws in a few too many errors here and there giving away games) but she's a clean ball striker. Multiple slam potential for sure. Hope she can stay consistently at a high level.

I have to think she's the favorite in Australia.
Far too early for that, considering her injury problems.

I hope she wins many more. But I don't think you can automatically assume that 4 months out. She's right up there, but other current champs Halep, Barty and Osaka are all there too.

Let's keep in mind there's a decent chance she wouldn't have even been in this final if Bemcic wasn't such a choker.

I have to note Andreescu's mother looks like a cross between Natasha of the Rocky and Bullwinkle show and Morticia Adams.
She makes Oracene Williams seem positively emotive.

:-D :-D Post of the month right here.

My wife commented on Andreescu's mom when they showed her in the stands. She looked like a robot or mannequin or something. Seemed to have the least enthusiasm possible.

The most important is to stay injury free

One on hand we could call Bencic a chocker, while on the other hand it's usually the better player that raises her/his level and gets into opponents' head( think Federer and Nadal)...

Bianca did what she had to do to win towards end of sets and that's exactly what the better players do, don't they?
Plus I think that the knee was bothering Bianca somewhat.

I have to agree. It is fun to take on the bully and it feels righteous when Serena's army of little minions try to depress dissent and tell you things you know not to be true.

However, what I said about her (the NY crowd was in her corner and loosing four straight Slam finals as you continue to age and the younger players begin to take over
is going to become a psychic barrier in William's own mind as formidable as any opponent)
are self evident facts whether you find them derogatory or not.
This is a classic case of someone not being able to handle the truth.

I thought Williams handled the whole match well. No blow ups or tantrums. She seemed gracious and resigned to the fact that Andreescu was the better player yesterday.
You could learn something from her example.

There's something I noticed about Andreescu's blistering forehands. They were clocked in the mid 80s. I think 86MPH was the fastest shown on ESPN. But somehow it seems slower than Berretini's 86-87MPH average forehand speeds. They're shown both on ESPN and on the same court, so I'm assuming the same cameras and of course on my same TV. I bet Berretini hits with a much higher RPM, but the WTA play with regular duty and lighter balls so they travel faster. Men play with the heavier extra duty balls. I'm unsure how all this translates into Andrescu's shots looking much slower than Berretini's. Maybe it's just me.

Gracious?

Serena has learned acting from the best, her Hollywood friends. Her fake celeb smiles can fool only the foolhardy though.

Even if you didn't watch, how can anybody fluke winning seven matches in a row, beating in form players like Townsend and Bencic before dispatching Serena herself. Nobody knows how many, if any, more slams she will win, but this one wasn't a fluke. Winning a slam is almost never a fluke.

You can't win with her. When she's genuine she behaves terribly, when she's on her best behaviour she's merely being fake.
As usual her post match comments detracted from and diminished what Andreescu did to her by constantly saying (paraphrasing) I wasn't myself, the real Serena wasn't out there etc.
Of course every losing player can say that. Halep could have said that of Townsend (if the real Simona Halep had played today...etc.).
But she didn't. She knows that diminishes what Taylor Townsend did and it sounds petulant and spoiled. And it does and it robs your opponent of the credit she is due.

I understand Williams truly believes when the "real" Serena Williams is in top form no can beat her but every top player can legitimately say that also.
What she will never get is there are two people on the court and when one of them is winning the other player necessarily will not be playing her best.
Old habits die hard for Serena. She truly has impaired self awareness. Maybe it makes her a better tennis player but it also makes her a lesser person.

So happy for her...I didn't even know who she was until the Townshend match and I said this girl will be in the finals. And she looks remarkably like Shailene Woodley. Not a bad look to have..

Both Williams sisters suffer from this condition, which is in evidence also by the way they dress on court. Especially Serena who picks often the most ludicrous-looking clown outfits.

This is the case with any ATG in the twilight of their career. Williams, Federer, Djokovic, and Nadal. They definitely do take for granted how good they are -- and with good reason. Let's be honest... Williams (or Federer/Djokovic/Nadal) doesn't need to be in top form to beat everyone. They only need to be in middle-of-the-road form.

Andreescu performed incredibly well in this tournament. Her win was well-deserved and full credit to her. She beat everyone in front of her.

However, people need to stop the fantasy that Andreescu's form somehow affected Williams. From the very first ball, Williams was in her very familiar mopey, terrible body language, lazy feet, shrugging shoulders Finals form. Williams' first serve in percentage was 44% for the match. 44%. In set #2, where she came back from 1-5 down, her first serve in percentage was 37%. She almost won the second set serving 37% first-serve-in and W/UE being 17-19.

We all saw several easy middle-court balls that Williams hits regularly to the corners which were going straight into the net. It wasn't Andreescu's ball doing making that happen. Williams has defeated harder and heavier hitters than Andreescu. Nobody is questioning that Andreescu's level was high. However, Williams' form was nowhere near decent. FAR from it. I like Williams, but personally, I wish she'd just retire. I am tired of seeing her mow down the entire field just to get the finals of slams and not prepare. It's enough already.

All I want out of tennis is competitive matches between two players at high level in the finals of any slam. This was a travesty on the women's side.

How do you separate how well Andreescu was playing with how poorly Serena performed? Neither person is playing in a bubble or a vacuum.
Tennis like most sports is antibiotic.. Not symbiotic.

True Williams was missing serves and ground strokes but was that because Andreescu was nailing hers?
I think Serena knew from Toronto she had a real fight on her hands and I just don't think she's up to it anymore. I think she would love to leave the game but doesn't know how and she's so close to a record I don't think she'll ever get.
Four finals losses in a row. I think it's gotten into her head as she gets older and the younger players are taking over the realization has worked it's way into her mind.

Because I have eyes and I can also see what the stats tell me. Can you not see that with your logic, we can also say that Andreescu was playing at such a high level because Williams was playing so poorly? It makes no sense.

It's really simple. At the end of any match, you merely need to ask the question (and try to be objective in answering)... "On a scale of 1 to 10, how high of a level did each player play?" For this match, I'd say that Williams was about a 3. I'd say that Andreescu was about a 9. The result of the match bears that out.

For me, I like to see matches where both players are at least at a 7-8 level out of 10. Those matches (in the QF, SF, and Finals) are usually incredible and highly competitive.

Bianca was rushing and pressuring Serena into bad form. Bianca has a huge game so opponents are intimidated even before the match begins.

Playing someone you might feel from the start you are inferior to can cause one to tighten up and not play well at all.
Tennis is a highly mental/emotional game. With all due respect, are you a player? Your state of mind can drag you down or free you up to play beautiful instinctive tennis.

Yes, I am a player. I've played for quite a long time.

She'll win many matches on power alone. She basically matches Serena in that department and it's won her 23 slams just because she's more powerful than 95% of the women on tour.
Lets hold our horses here, lest she end up like a one trick pony :p Muguruza also won 2, Sloane also won one.

So true.

Serena played like crap, because of the pressure Bianca applied to her physically and mentally.

You're only as good as you can play that given day.

People need to stop making excuses for Serena.
