Biggest Bust - Gasquet?

Watching his match against Rafael Nadal the other day, I couldn't help but think Richard Gasquet has squandered a lot of time in his career. You can't really have a pity party for a guy who is still a millionaire at he end of the day, but I would have enjoyed seeing him play more. Another player that comes to mind for me is Alexander Bublik.

So which player would you like to have seen more of in the later stages of a Grand Slam? Only one rule - no (current) Grand Slam winners

Obviously I wish I could just insert Dustin Brown (circa 2014-2017) into the QF at Wimbledon and watch him go. He always shows up on days when he’s the super underdog and plays with total reckless abandon (see match wins over Nadal, Isner, Zverev, and Hewitt). I think he could have been the ultimate troll spoiler if only he could have gotten out of the early rounds.

Yes, he's the only grass court specialist that I can think of in this era. He appears in July, along with the strawberries & cream and purple & green.

I would like to see Tsonga, Monfils, Ryan Harrison (JK), win the French. I would love to see Fognini sweep the clay court warm ups and lose in the first round of the French, probably more likely than the former. Feliciano Lopez going deep in an major would be rather unexpected and make me as well as lot of women around the world very happy, for different reasons. Diego winning roland Garros would be great. Kyrgios winning the Australian and having a Good Will Hunting Robin Williams moment of crying, before realizing his potential for the remainder of his career and starting a charity that spreads awareness of narcissitic personality disorder and bipolar, and maybe starting a protect the Koala fund or something...

Gasquet is a lesser Stanimal, but not as strong or tough, and can't get down low like the animal. One great weakness of his: backswings take too long to get going.

The difference is I think that Medvedev is maximising his talent so I wouldn't call him a bust. Rios imo could have been in Lendl, McEnroe, Wilander territory in terms of slam wins. He was great on hardcourts as well as clay, with great hands. He was like a forerunner to Nadal, a silkier version. I really don't quite understand how he ended up with none. I do know that back injuries shortened his career but he should have performed better at slams long before this.

Or maybe he is living proof that the eye test is useless?

I think his backswing is fine - he’s a great player. His biggest weakness is highlighted in your first sentence which I completely agree with - he is not anywhere near aggressive enough as he should be.

And he is not the best mover. But otherwise he is a player about delicate patterns of play with his top spin game, picking his moments and tighter angles more than power.

The FO is custom made for Rafa. It's difficult to blame Gasquet for losing to the uber overdog. Gasquet has beaten Nadal at other venues outside the ATP tour.
It's also difficult to judge Gasquet - he's been ranked #5, made millions on prize money alone, and many times that in endorsements, and had a career all of us would kill for.
There is a reason people idolize those at the top, they are a rarity, even if some say the slams and the system may be tilted towards their success in modern times.
The big three will eventually retire and tennis will become interesting to players again.

I expected big things of him earlier on. Maybe being from a wealthy family made him too laid back and not motivated enough.

He made it to the top10 despite having very average serve, forehand and movement. That's how good his backhand is/was. Not only beautiful, but versatile and powerful.

I don't blame him for losing to Rafa on clay. You can't blame anyone for that. I just think if Diego Schwartzman (who always lays it out on the line) can get one win, so can Ritchie.

Great career certainly. I just think he could have made to a GS final. Wish he had played Rafa on grass just once. No one is bashing him, just expressing some woulda coulda shouldas.
