BPA-Free Water Bottles

Does anyone know of any BPA-free water bottles that are freezable? This Summer on the few days that I was able to hit during the work week I was always playing at public free courts. This meant no ice readily available on demand.

As a remedy to not having iced on demand, I would save some of my old 32oz Gatorade bottles, mix my drink and freeze them the night before. I would then place them in a small cooler filled with ice from home. This actually works well with me leaving home at 7am and not making it to the courts until 6pm. My drinks would be at the perfect consistency of ice/liquid. I just have one concern. With the re-use of these bottles, the possible leeching of BPA.

So again, does anyone know of any BPA-free bottles that can handle being frozen multiple times?

i haven't seen one that says that it is safe to freeze, because stainless steel water bottles transfer heat and cold straight through the bottle.

you can try to find insulated bottles which i hear works well with keeping your liquids cold.

Does it have to say safe to freeze? I bought a six-pack of BPA bottles at Costco and have freezed them this summer. Works fine but of course, you can't tell with taste.

I would think that you're not going to get any harmful effects from freezing (or heating) a BPA-free plastic bottle. My main concern with freezing some of these bottles is that they just won't hold up. The think plastic Gatorade bottles actually hold up quite well to multiple freezings. I'm looking for something of that nature that can go on indefinitely in terms of being frozen. I'll check around to see what I can find. Thanks for the info!

I've been using this for a while now and it's the best bottle I've had.

I dropped one of those metal bottles (non-frozen) from waist-high in a parking lot, and it burst! Couldn't believe it.

Plus, some metal bottles have recently been proven to contain small amounts of BPA.

Co-sign on Polar. We've been using these for a couple of years and they hold up great even after being subjected to repeated freezing. The insulation isn't quite as good as it appears to be -- it is really just a layer of a very thin foil-like material that is sandwiched on the bottle. But, it is better than anything else I've used and does help keep contents a bit colder. Will be getting some tall-boy 24 oz. to go with our new taller cooler bag.

Don't know if you have one in your area, but Sports Chalet always has a really good selection of these -- much more so that other sporting goods stores in my area. Alternatively, REI or A16 might be good options.

Il Mostro,

No Sports Chalets here but I'll check out REI.

Thanks!

I have a couple of the Polar bottle and while usage is ok, the insulation is nowhere as good as they make you think it is.

But I really dislike the cleaning part of it. If you look inside the bottle, there are lots of dented in holes on the inside wall and they tend to very easily build up with some black spots that are virtually impossible to clean out. I tried using a toothbrush to scrub it out but it doesn't work very well and I can never get everything out. It's very hard to reach those holes from the mouth, too, and the toothbrush handle is not long enough to reach the bottom half of the bottle. I try to rinse it out right away after each use, but that didn't help prevent the black spots.

I put Gatorade mix drink in it and not just water. I don't know if that causes the problem compared to just water. The fact that the surface is soft plastic probably doesn't help because I bet it promotes build-ups more easily than if it were a harder and smoother surface. But those holes are the most stupid things. I don't even know why they put the holes in there in the first place. Probably to maintain the insulation distance between the outside wall and inside wall, because the soft plastic is not rigid enough to keep the form and space without them, maybe.

The grooves on the inside of the screw-on cap is also easy to trap build-ups and hard to clean because the lips are angled inward. You can get it clean with a toothbrush but it takes a lot of effort. Even the pointy tip of the cap traps build-ups easily and is hard to clean even if you take out the black removable valve completely, unless you have a pointy small round brush head that fits in that tiny opening. The toothbrush head doesn't fit in there.

I just stopped using them after a few times because it's not worth the effort to keep them clean. And you just don't want to reuse them anymore after you see all those black spots and build-ups everywhere that you can't remove.

Dude, it's a normal water bottle. It cleans up the same as any I've had over the years. We use Accelerade and Ultima Replensher, respectively. HTF do you get *black* spots? Hint: clean it regularly and as soon as you are done with it. Gatorade mix that leaves black residue??????

I use Nalgene 32oz bpa bottle. Not a problem with freezing.

Besides, if it breaks, I'll just get a new one. It costs less than 10 bucks at Tar-jay.

Dude, hint: if you had read my post carefully, you would have seen me say that "I try to rinse it out right away after each use".

HTF do I get "black" spots? That's what I'd like to know, too. Maybe I get a bad batch or something. But the fact remains that I get the black spots no matter how carefully and regularly I clean them as soon as I'm done with them.

My Gatorade mix doesn't leave black residue on any of my other bottles beside the Polar bottle.

When I got home I double-checked all of our bottles just to make sure I wasn't missing something. All clean as a whistle. No residue on the "dimples" on the side. You've got the black plague.

Just joining in with the love for the Polar bottle and the newer Nalgenes. I bought all of my polar bottles at my LBS (local bike shop). They double as water bottles for my bike since they are made to fit the bottle cages mounted to the downtube or seat-tube.

BTW, man, about that black stuff.....Gatorade is just evil. That's the evil showing off. Get a bottle cleaner. It's a brush designed for cleaning thin bottles. It's a buck or two. You use it with a drop of dish soap. I think vinegar will really do the trick.....it works on mold.

I drink water, coconut water and sometimes a mixture of water with grape juice or apple juice. I rinse them out with hot water and a little soap. I have not used the brush. My wife does run them through the dishwasher about every week.

Yeah, I bet you the Gatorade powder mix didn't dissolve completely and some of the residue stuck to those cavities even after washing with soap. Then because they're cavities, they still hold a little bit of water before drying out, causing the Gatorade powder residue in those cavities to stay wet longer and eventually turn black. I'm not talking a lot of black, but even a tiny speck of black in a few of those holes can already turn you off. And once they're there, they're hard to remove unless you have the right brush and must really try to brush them out. A lot of dish soap didn't help in my case. Vinegar would probably do the trick like Slice said, but I didn't try it. It's just not worth the trouble to resort to extreme measures of cleaning like that anyway.

I'm not trying to discredit any of the other posters who say the bottle works out well for them. I fully believe them especially if they use it for just plain water. I'm just trying to share my experience of using it from the perspective of a Gatorade mix powder user, which is not very good.

As much as I love my BPA-free Polar Bottles (and I like that little bear logo), I do taste a little plastic in the water.

Props to the Kleen Kanteen. It's made of metal. It does not keep water cool for very long on a hot day, but it's my favorite water bottle (I like tepid water).
