Cilic, very unpopular.

Today I went to Cilic's Facebook page. None of his photos in the past 24 hours had more than 20,000 likes. None, not even him holding the US Open trophy.

I went to Nishikori's page, and his last photo has almost 350,000 likes.

Cilic has almost 100,000 likes for his page and Nishikori has about 350,000.

When Nadal won the French, last I saw his trophy photo had almost 900,000 likes.

I think this "data" is a sign of the USO final being a boring dud and not actually good for tennis.

Let's hope Nadal can save tennis next year. He was sorely missed.

Don't judge everything on what other people think or how many Facebook likes does something have.

The fans of Nishikori are a lot of Japanese who didn't know him before this week, he is headline news over there. Cilic has never been a big name player for the public and Croatia is a small country with lots of sports stars. Anyone can be popular depending on how much media they get or stuff they win.

Just a guess, but not sure Marin cares too much about social media at this point (maybe he will going forward). His coach isn't exactly a social media type either....

I was at the afternoon session last Thursday and watched Cilic dismantle Berdych. No one in the box could understand what happened to Tomas - we all thought he just had a 'bad day'. The same happened to Djokovic at the hands of Nishikori (he got smoked). And then Cilic blew Kei off the court. My point is that getting 'likes' on FB may require more than just being a great tennis player.

Congrats to Cilic and I hope to see him continue to challenge the Big 4 at every event!

What happened to Tomas is he faced a guy who is serving on fire, moving better than he has ever before, and had reached #9 in the world previously and appeared to be perennial top 10 material to my eyes back then. It doesn't surprise me, what surprised me is how low he sunk after 2010.

These big serving guys can roll through a tournament when the are on. What Cilic has over Raonic and Isner, for example, is much better movement.

I liked Cilic's post and Facebook page, so that must mean I am part of his "fanbase consisting of mainly intelligent, mature people". Sounds right to me LOL

agreed and i'd like to add that Cilic has a better ROS than Raonic & Isner as well.

Cilic is a well spoken, handsome and marketable champion. I'm sure his Facebook "likes" will only grow from here.

Speaking of popularity, Maria Sharapova is immensely popular. The queen of social media cannot be denied!

Glad to see Cilic win. He's a good guy. A bit like Sampras in personality. A bit bland. So will never be that popular.

Maybe this has to do more with region of origin. Li Na is very popular on social media compared to others as well.

Handsome? hahahaha. Worst looking guy on the tour. And worst dressed along with andy murray.

The worm Stepanek looks a little worse but still gets the model girlfriends.

And he's so unpopular.. After what's probably the best day of his life, it shows how no one really cares he won.

That unpopular.

lol... not even close. Although he does give me a bit of a Dracula vibe.

LOL, a lot of women find dracula attractive. you want ugly look no further than federer and murray. murray has that ratface vibe and federer looks like a shady drug informant who has done to much meth.

cilic just looks like a guy. i dont see him carrying a purse on to court or wear flashy clothes to get attention.

you want dracula check out Rios. He is half vampire.

Tennis fans are going to get used to the likes of Wawrinka and Cilic winning slams. They are very hungry and the top players are declining. We are going to see players like Dimitrov, Nishikori, Raonic, Kyrgios, Gulbis, Tomic, Thiem, Janowicz, Goffin, etc. winning slams in the future

Popularity can also be linked to success. It can grow.

I never paid serious attention to Cilic before this open because I did not think he had any serious chances of winning something at big as a slam.

Now I'm interested to see if this is a one time thing, or if he can repeat it.

If he continues to play at this level in the future I will very interested. But I'm just not convinced yet. It's a bit like when Wawrinka won the AO. I thought it was probably a one-time thing, and so far that seems to be so.

Maybe it's because Cilic comes from a tiny country called Croatia and Nishikori comes from a hugely populated country called Japan!?

But if you would rather draw the naive conclusion that it's because he's unpopular, then go ahead.

Be proud of yourself for your wise insight!

kournakova was very popular too. Tennis is not a popularity contest unless your priorities are things outside of your game. Cilic has not shown any of this in the past.

man.....you facebook guys would have hated lendl. Rios would have made you quit the game. some athletes just dont care about image marketing. they just want to compete and win in the game they dedicate themselves. 99% of all the marketing is a fraud anyways. They are just putting on a false image for sponsors. Take rios for example...he was the real deal. he just didnt care about any of it...LOL.

What is with the popularity and the FB Likes?

I don't understand!

I follow tennis and play on a regular basis but never ever have "Liked" anything tennis related. I don't follow any tennis player on Twitter and don't buy everything the companies like Nike, Adidas etc are throwing at the consumer.

Is it so rare for the people nowadays to behave normally and not act like some starstruck wannbies?

Popularity matters when it's individuals that carry the sport. Less networks will carry and devote air time to tennis if it doesn't make them money.

Professional tennis is much more than playing the game, whether fans like it or not.

Yes, you aren't cool, and aren't part of the in crowd, if you're not swallowing what the media shoves down your throat.

you should watch an old paul newman movie called slapshot. Thats the path tennis is heading on right now. If tennis cannot survive based on the game itself i would rather see it have a lesser following than turning it into a clown fest. Growth is not always good growth. growth can also be like cancer. more money does not always improve things...look at governments.

its just media manipulation of the sport. before you know it tennis headlines are like the national enquirer. its already happening. Even half the threads here get like that. sometimes i think a large majority here is more dedicated to posting about tennis gossip than actually working on their game.

Yes, Indded. US open men's final was as boring as women Final. Just compare the two matches 2013 and 2014 and you will realize yourself. Yes, am not going back to compare different matches but just US open and back to just one year.

A quality belongs to the last years' match far above and the kind of crowd enjoyed was just you can't imagine.

Good thing is that we had two new faces in grand slam final level, but am just worrying that are they carry the charisma the kind of big 4 has it in Tennis game.

While very effective on the court and well-spoken in press conferences, Cilic lacks the personality, style, and ultimately the charisma to become a popular figure in tennis. His game is blunt and powerful, not elegant and creative. And he won a little too quickly and easily to add dramatic intrigue to the event. These qualities are what endear us to athletes. Think Jordan, Shaq, Ruth, Montana, Federer: they brought intrigue to their sports by making them appear magical, beautiful, and dramatic.

What's creative about tennis?.. It's all patterns that are played billions of times and the point is to play them as efficient as possible. Cilic probably played the best 9 sets in a row ever in a major tournament. The guy was untouchable. Had he dropped his level his matches would have had more suspense, but kuddos to him he didn't let that happen. Watching the celebrations in Croatia, his popularity didn't really suffer from not being challenged. And who cares about facebook?

It's beyond nationalistic pride when the winner of the US Open can't even get 20,000 likes on his photos.

What's creative about tennis? You cannot be serious.

Just these four points should show you what a creative game is, if you aren't sure.

A better statistic would be there are 1.5 million Facebook users from Croatia. http://www.croatiaweek.com/croatia-70th-in-the-world-for-facebook-profiles/

And 17 million Facebook users from Japan.
http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats3.htm

Good stats, but I would also agree with others who point out his bland personality didn't seem to win him many international fans.

When I went to check out a lot of the top players and their facebook likes stats just now, and true most had their biggest fanbase in their home countries, it's surprising Sharapova has the most fans from Egypt, and Federer from Taiwan making up their numbers.

That would be true too of someone with over 40,000 posts on this forum, no?
Tennis is the real world. Facebook is totally unnecessary and a complete waste of time. That's why I don't bother with it. People feel they have to be on Facebook because they can't think independently. The world would still be the same if Facebook disappeared tomorrow.
