Coaches Hot Seat

Add USF and maybe Purdue. If the boilermakers can get past Michigan State then the pressure may be eased of Pawel a bit. Purdue’s whole season has been inconsistencies.

Maybe add George Washington - 2 wins this season and SMU - lost to UTSA at home last week??

Word on the street was that he was on the hot seat coming into the season, but now with all these injuries it will be interesting to see if that is taken into account.
Very interesting to hear that. Yeah, I agree with you, cannot blame the coach for the injuries unless the injuries occurred due to too much/too little practice. Their problem is the roster of only 8 players. A serious SEC team like Ole Miss cannot afford to have only only 8 players. I noticed also that Robert Mounger is not a part of the team anymore. He was on the roster for the past 2 years. So far, I saw that only Sebastian Rios (4-star) committed. It will be tough to replace Hansson.

normally ole miss gets 2 european Players , mostly late in summer/fall
and they Need 2 Player
as hansson Babic and hamilton are Seniors

i expect more by Reynolds by the way. And maybe also by Wilson . Babic on #3 is a shame this season but he seems to Play thru injury?
Reynolds is still so Young, he is only 18 since january! Wow! could ve played a whole itf Junior season this year. Melbourne 2017 Doubles runner-up (with DuarteVale)

Looked like Reynolds was starting to adjust and play better. With a win over Georgia and then played 6-7 (7-9) against Scott Jones who is a good player. Then must have gotten injured before or during Florida as he retired against South Carolina. But I also expect him to step up a lot in coming years and hopefully replace hansson.

Add Rice. Poor season after winning the CUSA last season. 2 wins in their last 8 matches against TAMUCC and San Diego State (another team who’s performing way below standards this season).

So let me get this straight. You want to fire the SMU and Rice coaches for having rebuilding years with significant amount of freshmen after both have made the NCAA tournament the past 2 seasons? In the case of Rice, winning consecutive CUSA titles in 2016 and 2017. And in the case of SMU, making the NCAAs Sweet 16 in 2016.

You’re right, usually they announce their signing late in the Spring.
Coming in as 83-high ITF, I expected much more from Reynolds as well. He is still very young. Lot of space to improve.
Although it was tough to expect Babic would be a good #3, he did not start the season as bad, but he has continuos easy losses since the last time he won against Cornell early in the season. He is definitely injured because last matches he served underhanded.
In my opinion Ole Miss needs to bring 4 players at least. A team needs to have 9-10 players. They lose 3, so they need 4 or even 5 players. It will be a huge rebuilding year for the Rebels.

How about some of the Power 5 programs who annually do not compete - Nebraska, Michigan State, Auburn, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Washington, etc? Is this a coaching issue or a simple lack of funding issue (or combination of both)?

Boston College does not offer tennis scholarships and seem content that way.

Michigan State only gives them to in-state players and they don't seem to care about fielding a competitive team.

Auburn has a 1st year coach this year so they made a change and want to improve

Virginia Tech had made the NCAA tournament 10 straight years before last year so they definitely don't fit into this "don't compete" category.

Washington and Nebraska are the 2 you could legitimately consider out of these. Both have very good facilities and should be better.

I think the Auburn athletic dept wants Auburn tennis to succeed. They brought in a coach who had been a #1 ranked college player, SEC player of the year, asst coach at Oklahoma, and who had played professional tennis for 12 years. On paper, he sounded like a great hire. Maybe he just needs more time to bring in his own recruits. Since Reynolds is from the Atlanta area, it was thought that would help recruit top southern players many of whom are from the Atlanta area. However, Auburn does not have any US recruits yet from the class of 2018.

I have heard Mich State only has in-state scholarship $ for athletes or at least tennis athletes. It is ironic that Western Michigan draws higher ranked international players than Mich State and usually beats Mich State. It is possible that Western Mich has more funded scholarships than Mich State. While NCAA permits 4.5 scholarships for men, not all D1 and not even all power D1 fully fund those scholarships. Almost all the Mich State players are from Michigan, while Western Michigan players are mostly internationals-bunch of Germans with a few Michigan guys.

I have heard Boston College does not fund athletic scholarships for tennis so the school will always be in basement of ACC. In Virginia, I think there is a limit of what % of student athletic fees can go to sports at public universities. UVA has a great booster program so no issue but it could be VA Tech does not fully fund 4.5 tennis scholarships. I have heard Nebraska has great athletic facilities, but maybe it is hard for the school to attract players. Top players may go to a less ideal location, e.g. Mississippi if the program is ranked, e.g. Miss State. However Nebraska is unranked, probably in the middle of cornfields (no that's Purdue which should also be on the list), and not near any big cities. However, Iowa does better than Nebraska and Purdue-seems some high ranked (13+) players chose to go in state plus they recruit the occasional Brit. I would not have thought of Iowa as a tennis hot spot but Alexander Brown, the talented Illinois freshman who has played 1 and 2 is also from Iowa,.

Auburn has a great head coach. A good freshman this year in Matteo DeVincentis. If Bobby Reynolds can continue to recruit players like him, Auburn can potentially be a good top 30 team in 2 years or so, but he will need time.

Is Mac doing George Washington Univ. an injustice by continuing to coach Isner and the Bryan brothers? GW is currently 2-16 coming off winning the A10 title two years ago.

Interesting to see how Alabama has come very close in a lot of these SEC matches yet they have not been able to win any of them.
This has been going on for a long time. That team is talented! It is truly unbelievable that they can't make the NCAA for so many years in a row considering their facility, talent and schedule.

Bama again will not make it....as they ll have now 4 tough games ahead in the sec....plus one sec-tournament game, maybe they ll beat auburn again there but will not be enough

Bama will be the 2nd lowest seed in the SEC tourney - only Auburn will be lower. That means Bama will draw either Florida or TAM in first round = yet another conference loss. Amazing to think that a coach in his sixth season at Bama can only win one conference match. Good news is the writing is on the wall, its adios Jorge after the 2018 season!

First BIG shoe to drop this year, Pepperdine just let the men's coach go. According to the schools press release, they let him go before the season ended. This should get a lot of attention from around the country.

I hope the AD is smart enough to make the move. I have heard "Jorge" has been conducting a massive PR campaign around the department to keep his job. Has come out and said how his team just beat Georgia for the first time in years and how his team was redhot to start the year. Maybe an AD that barely pays attention to tennis will fall for this, but the rest of the tennis community knows Bama played a cupcake first 2/3 of it's schedule and beat a Georgia team this past weekend that is currently a dumpster fire. Hoping for the best but not expecting anything unfortunately.

With jobs coming open within the next few weeks and a pretty big job at Pepperdine currently open I have compiled a short list of coaches on the hot seat. (Men Only)

Pepperdine (Open)
Alabama
Washington
Nebraska
Purdue
Iowa
SDSU
UNLV
St Marys (CA)
George Washington

KEEP An Eye On
South Florida
Rice
SMU
Clemson
UTSA
UAB
Xavier
Yale
Brown

I would add Ole Miss to this list.
Maybe in the Keep and Eye on section. I was considering it, but you have to factor in injuries. I was considering Auburn too but the coach is new so giving him some slack. But Auburn is really bad and haven't heard about any team changing recruits. It could get ugly fast down there, the SEC is no joke.

Xavier have the pedigree and can attract anyone but don’t really have the talent to go with it. They should be a top 50 program though, unfortunately the talent isn’t there for them. Do they have a Michigan State esque recruiting process or are they more like Nebraska to not care about tennis?

Maybe. But blanket excuses for the injuries being back luck or not preventable is debatable. We'll see. My bet is no changes at Ole Miss MT this year.
Coach Hansson handles the position quite well. This was a very unfortunate season and I don't think there should be a coaching change because of one bad year. By saying bad, the team will still make the NCAAs even with half of their team, so... depends how you look at it.

Great end of season turnaround job. Wonder what magic Fisher used to get them in gear. Might be a little to late, but I give them a little better than a punchers chance tomorrow to advance to the NCAA's.

They did come within a 3rd set tiebreaker to beating Baylor earlier this year. So they had the ability I guess. But that makes it harder to explain those poor losses.

Right. USF had some other close 4-3 losses to ranked teams OU, ODU and Harvard. The baffler for me is the 4-0 comprehensive Memphis win over them just a couple weeks ago. If I recall correct, I think the Memphis may have been close or down on the other 3 courts. Maybe not so comprehensive. HAHA

The way the season appears to be playing out elsewhere, my guess is the Tigers would have remained about 17 at best come selection time. So we have a 2 seed which is maybe not so bad. Hopefully we get to got to Starkville regional, an easy drive.

Based on the Twitter comments by former players it looks like Knoll's resignation wasn't purely his own decision- which seems pretty ruthless.

The Gonzaga mens head tennis coach, Peter MacDonald, and the Boise State mens head tennis coach, Greg Patton, both stepped down.

It would be ridiculous if Baylor decided to let him go based on results. They finished #18 this year, they almost never have down years and were a serious national title contender just a few years ago in 2015 (lost to Virginia in final 4). He is also the coach who brought Baylor their first ever national title in any sport back in the era when they were pretty bad in most sports.

Here's my take. Over the last few years I've seen a few coaches, one of them from a Power 5 conference, resign and take a early retirement package. Long tenured coaches like Knoll probably make a pretty good salary and can be replaced by a less experienced coach for much less. Not saying I agree with it, just my guess as part of what may be behind the move from the Baylor AD.

andfor makes a good point. In public education, both at the public school level (my ballpark), and at the collegiate level, retirement incentives are very common.

I can tell you that a Power 5 school offered, a year ago, a full year's salary, plus maintaining healthcare until age 65, for any employee whose experience met a certain benchmark.

So....tapping into a good retirement system, healthcare paid until Medicare, a full year's salary on top of that. If your own financial house is in good order, that's a tough one to pass up.

Of course, I am being hypothetical. But, those retirement incentives are out there. Not only is the new hire paid less, but he/she is put into a less-lucrative retirement plan than we old farts enjoy.

Win-win for the institution making the offer.

Though, I'm just guessing, that's all.
