Coco Vandeweghe backhand

Wanted to post this since I watched her in the Aus Open. Her backhand looks different than most female pros I've seen. She seems to stand up straighter, it's a compact swing, almost like a baseball hitter, and gets her effortless power. I tried to freeze frame some of her shots and it looks like she's using a double bend but I'm not seeing how she gets such effortless power. Also any idea what kind of grip she's using for that?

Is there anyone else, male or female who has a similar stroke? I'm just fascinated with how compact and powerful that swing is.

:) Not sure if that's the answer. Muguruza is tall too ; so is Sharapova. Neither have that effortless power that Coco seems to generate.

I watch her stroke and my first thought is that her backswing is very large and yet she still has time to get all of the way around.

Maybe Marin Cilic or Alexander Zverev have similar large backswings.

I've seen both in person up close at Wimbledon. Coco is more than just tall. She's big boned. Garbine isn't built as "sturdy" as coco. Her being an amazon as the source of her power was a joke though. :)

Heh..understood. I was just playing along too. As S&V wrote, I might be a bit mistaken describing it as compact. Maybe her backswing is larger than most. The stroke just looks so fluid though and unlike most players she doesn't seem to hunch over the ball as much. Closest I've seen to Davenport in terms of how effortless the shot is.

It's all in the glutes. You see the rumps on these wta pros? :D

Some people are just blessed with better genes and come from better stock. Have you ever heard the saying, "there's strong and then there's farm strong?" Coco might just be farm strong.

She's a big girl, all right: I closed my eyes and listened to her, her doubles partner, and their doubles opponents hit serves: you could clearly tell which ones were Coco's. A cannon among rifles.

Whoa. Yeah, she wallops that thing. Looks like a modified softball swing. Know if she's got any background out on the diamond?

Don't know. Would you say she has perhaps the biggest backswing on the WTA? I can't think of very many who take the racquet back that far and that high.

As for genes, she's got an Olympic swimmer and a pro basketball player [and probably more] in the family tree.

I don't know the WTA well enough to have an opinion. I saw the name and wondered if she were any relation to Kiki. Didn't need to look at her for long to know she had height genes in the family tree. Which I guess is sort of par for the course if you're a "Vandeweghe." That's got to be Dutch, right?

Yup, Kiki is an uncle, I believe.
