Vandeweghe

Vandeweghe has got a solid power game and is playing well. Super solid serve, hits the ball hard, takes it to her opponent. She has a relatively positive attitude (to herself, anyway) and knows how to get herself motivated and pumped up. Played well today, especially when in counted.

Nonetheless, there is no player on the tour today, male or female, who I hope to see lose more than her. Not sure what is up with that but I find her just so incredibly annoying. Maybe if she would just close her mouth a bit when she does the pump myself up scream?

Extremely arrogant, like, more than any other player today. Usually I don't mind such things like this, so it's weird that she rubs me the wrong way.
i don't mind arrogance usually too - confidence to the point of arrogance is a huge part of success at tennis (I think), but I agree it really irritates me from her - over the top, undeserved maybe? i dunno exactly....

Unbelievably obnoxious, especially given her credentials and skill. She has Djokovic brashness with Roberto Bautista Agut-caliber skill and achievements. It just doesn't fit. And even Djoker is gracious when he needs to be. I don't think Coco is capable of the same.

Funny, 9/10 times when I hear the word 'arrogant' thrown around I think it's just used to denigrate someone for their confidence and sense of self-worth. Me, I'm actually attracted to personalities that are super comfortable with themselves, whether you're in a cardboard box or a your secretary has a secretary.

With Coco, branding her as 'arrogant' is to let her off lightly.

Her arrogance and associated mannerisms are so exaggerated (given her place in the sport) that I often have to remind myself just who I'm actually looking at. To see her stomping around after a win with that WWF look after a win.......woooah, woah, woah....a non-tennis fan walking in the room might easily think she'd just deposed the GOAT and eclipsed her in their H2H following an epic Djokoray-esque tussle.

You'd imagine by now her agent or someone would pull her aside and ask her to rein it in a bit, but the funny thing is, she's probably got zero fanbase to begin with, so what's the point?

Love her game, though! :D

She reminds me of the girls I played tennis with in college. Arrogant jocks without much in the way of brains. I guess the system in the US is kind of set up for rich young jocks to be good but they used to have some level of worldliness.

Big fan of Ostapenko and Sharapova. Usually cheer for Americans even if I am not a huge fan of their games. Can't stand her.

In dutch, i think it might be
faan-de-vé-chkge.

In Yiddish, i want to say "coco, oyyy vey!" Especially when she makes myriad unforced errors or displays suspect shot selection.

But i reckon it is van the weigh. And she seems to be playing pretty smart tennis under craig kardon and now cashy.

Yknow....I always liked when elton john would write and perform a song for a female tennis player (Philadelphia freedom).
I'd like him to open up ashe stadium next year, with..... vandeweghe night's alright for fightin'.

I agree coco is annoying. But, not a bad game.
Why is she annoying?
She is Strong. Boyish. Swagguh. Got dat Nba influence. some court cred with the doods for having an uncle like kiki (similar to miguel angel nadal).
Maybe some mannerisms from the BS world of espn, nfl, nba, mlb, etc.
One of my best friends is an engineer - a very techy hipster....totally not "lame-stream"...bit of a noam chomsky reader. But he somehow loves nfl football. He wonders why nba and nfl players look so angry right after they have done something awesome. This is what i see among some male jrs in tennis now. And coco.

Personally, she is Not attractive to me or my crowd, but, i would LOVE to see her win this tournament one day. Coco and Rybarikova have attractive games.

I'm a fan. She backs up her mouth with effort and talent.

If she also backed it up with some big tournament wins that'd help a lot!

I like girls with spunk but her demeanour is a bit too mannish and bully-ish for me, excuse the 1950's vibe of my first adjective. Again, if she'd demolish anyone in her path I'd say bring it on... but her results haven't backed up her attitude so far. She still has time and now is as good a chance as ever with the WTA clearly in transition.

Do you folks ever get tired of distracting yourself making up negative personalities for players over on-court demeanor? Just enjoy the tennis until or unless they pull a Fognini. I, for one, love Coco's serve and aggressive tactics. Haven't seen much of that in the last decade.

I'm not makin up any negative personalities - she does it all. Like others have said, damn if she'd just chill a bit I might be able to like her - her tennis is more than respectable. She is just beyond annoying...

She's perfectly lovely in her interviews so yes, you are just assigning personalities based on on-court demeanor/expressions. I get angry on-court when I play tennis and am the complete opposite when I'm not. It's not indicative of anything.

Just look at her Hopman interview with Jack Sock, you would see the difference between a down to Earth guy and Cocco

If you're American, I suppose that's how you pronounce it. But Angloguys are always hopeless at pronunciation. Vandeweghe is as dutch/flemish a name as can be. I wouldn't be surprised if she has dutch/flemish ancestors. And if you speak dutch/flemish, you would now how to pronounce 'Vandeweghe'. But she probably doesn't pronounce it herself that way, given she's 100% American.

She pronounces it Smith

so beyond annoying. Probably the reason she is so unlikeable is that it is false bravado and unsportsmanlike behavior. She needs media training too. She was trying sooooooooooo hard to use her pre-determined after win speech on ashe two times in a row and then (a little more mildly) within an ESPN interview. At the heart of things i think she is a big dork who goes way too far the other way to overcompensate. I think she thinks she's a far bigger hero in her own mind than she actually ever will be. She acts like a bully too. And Chris Evert (or one of those espn ladies) needs to get real about calling her "fit as a fiddle". Roll eyes. She is better than last year. But fit as a fiddle, i don't think so.

She also should have lost a point or two after the first rack throw. Maybe she is trying to create a brand image for herself??? she'd have to get rid of the annoying first. Take a look at how the top guys conduct their media interviews and get real. I always root for whoever is against her. It will be so easy with Safarova because I love her.

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't take it as personally as some posters here do. I have no idea what CoCo is like at home/hanging out with friends. The interview she gave with Shelby Rogers a day or two ago was very sweet.

But Tennis is a sport and it is fun to root for the players you love and against those you do not. CoCo is in the latter group for me. nbd

Not to excuse the mispronunciation, but is not possible that Van Der Weghe is also an acceptable Dutch name?

Noticed that 2 characters on The Magicians (SyFy TV series) used this spelling?

Somewhere along the way did the West Germanic der evolve into Modern Dutch de? Was der possibly more common in Old and Middle Dutch? I also noticed that Canadian actress, Laura Vandervoort (Smallville's Supergirl), is of Dutch descent (father).
