Both players have a radiant on court personality, especially courier during his heydays!.
I give the edge to courier, as he was far more versatile and an all around player. Sure he lacks the monster serve of roddick, however he can bludgeon players side to side with his groundies. Courier's transition game was better than roddicks and all in all he was the better returner. Courier's best vs roddick's best, would have been a interesting match up, I however give the edge to courier.

I'd give the edge to Roddick, because at his best, his forehand was big and had some nice short angles. His returns aren't bad either when he's on; against Federer last year at the US Open, he was ripping forehands and backhands off of fed's serve. (Also because I'm a roddick fan.)

Agassi has trouble beating Courier even in his prime. 35 year-old Agassi has no trouble whatsoever dispatching prime Roddick. You know how it goes if you asked the guy who played them both.

I gotta go with Courier. Roddick had a bigger serve, but Courier's was vastly underrated. His forehand was massive in his day, and better than Roddick's. He returned far better, moved better, and was more compitent at net and coming forward than most realize.

Courier > Roddick.

good question, let me break it down like this:

serve- roddick (not really that close)

forehand- courier (he can put the ball anywhere including by you)

backhand- roddick (as long as he stays away from that weak slice of his!)

return- draw (courier owns the forehand but that backhand of his is no where near as good as roddick's [now there's something i never thought i'd say!])

net game- courier just because he was selective about what he came in behind. he isn't gonna come in behind meatballs a la roddick!

intangibles- courier; the dude is like chang with a forehand! never quits.

for those of you keeping score at home, thats' courier 3.5- roddick 2.5

Very true. Personally, I've always valued peak over longevity.

So I value a borderline great player over a short span like Courier over a good player over a longer span like Andy.

Which also brings the question: What tier of guys all time does Courier fit into?

This is true; I think Roddick is under-rated a bit and would have more GS wins if not for Fed. While Courier had Sampras to deal with, I've always felt that Fed is one level above that. Roddick, when his game was on, could be ruthlessly efficient. And, he did stay near the top for quite some time. Personality wise, I also lean to Roddick. Overall though, I think Courier had the stronger game.

I am huge Courier fan boy, but I’d take Jim 10 times out of 10. Courier had such an all court game and always found a way to beat the one trick ponies like Roddick (big serve and forehand). Jim had a very underrated return of serve as well.
