@skypadq - I think the purpose of the story is to highlight that Medvedev had a very successful US Open campaign.

He didn’t win the final, but he was still one of the players to leave the tournament with a net positive result.

I agree with the sentiments but I don’t think they should have used the expression winner specifically because he was very poor in the final.
