The world’s second deadliest fungus, which can shrink a person’s brain if eaten, has been found growing in Far North Queensland.

The Poison Fire Coral fungus is normally found in the mountains of Japan and Korea, but fungus photographer Ray Palmer recently stumbled upon the specimen in Cairns.

Matt Barrett, a mycologist from James Cook University, confirmed the identity of the fungus and warned people not to touch or eat it.

“Of the hundred or so toxic mushrooms that are known to researchers, this is the only one in which the toxins can be absorbed through the skin,” Dr Barrett said.

Just touching the Fire Coral fungus can cause reddening or swelling of the skin, Dr Barrett said, but eating it could prove fatal.

“If eaten, it causes a horrifying array of symptoms: initially stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and numbness, followed over hours or days by delamination of skin on face, hands and feet, and shrinking of the brain, which, in turn, causes altered perception, motion difficulties and speech impediments,” he said.

Several people have died in Japan and Korea after mistaking the fungus for an edible mushroom and brewing it into a tea for medicine.

Dr Barrett said the fungus grew on tree roots and likely occurred naturally in Cairns. There have also been reported instances of the fungus growing in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, he said.

“This record extends the distribution of the fungus considerably, and it may be even more widespread in tropical Australia,” he said.

I did not know the dreaded Tomato was feared in Europe for 200 years.
:(

Why was the tomato feared in Europe?
In the late 1700s, a large percentage of Europeans feared the tomato. A nickname for the fruit was the “poison apple” because it was thought that aristocrats got sick and died after eating them, but the truth of the matter was that wealthy Europeans used pewter plates, which were high in lead content.

I cannot fathom Italian cuisine without the “pomodoro” (literal translation is fruit of gold) but the tomato was not a staple of Italian cuisine until the 19th century. No marinara, no Bolognese, no tomato sauce for pizza and no insalata Caprese!

Even pizza seems to have been a late 19th century invention

Italian pizza and American pizza are very different though. I always felt like pizza in the way we know it today, was more of an American thing. I think they took the idea from Europe and improved upon it so much that it really became it's own invention in a way.

True this; worst pizza I've had has generally been in Italy, seems to be taken much more seriously and creatively in USA.

I had an "Italian Style" pizza some years ago and I hated it. The crust was super thin and crispy like biting into a cracker or something. I won't go as far as the Chicago Deep Dish, but give me some crust that at least has a little bit of thickness to it. Generally the hand tossed style is where it's at for me.

This is interesting. A thread about a deadly brain fungus has evolved into a discussion of pizzas, cheeseburgers and Italian cuisine.

I also didn't have a good experience with the pizzas I had in Italy, but I was generally uncomfortable and out of synch in the big Italian cities I visited. I think the Italian immigrants in NYC greatly improved on the Italian pizza, and many New Yorkers express disdain for my love of the California innovations to pizza.

When my brother lived in Wyomissing, Pa., next town over from Reading, his neighbor was a guy named Joe who ran a famous restaurant in town at which every dish on the menu featured various kinds of mushrooms. Joe was so well known as a definitive mushroom expert that various emergency rooms all over the country had his phone number and would contact him if they were trying to determine the species and potential toxicity of a particular mushroom.

There might be a tennis store there? However, you have the wrong location for KKK. Try Mississippi for KKK. In fact many years ago the FBI opened
an office in Mississippi to investigate the death of 3 young men. They sent 150 FBI agents to that office...couldn't find out a darn thing...even the police there in Mississippi belonged to KKK.

So the FBI talked to Gregory Scarpa (chief enforcer for the Colombo crime family with over 100 murders to his credit) and asked Scarpa to go to Mississippi and see what he could find out. While Scarpa found the culprits, one of them confessed to Scarpa, which led to his two accomplices. The
FBI arrested the 3 men responsible for the murders and a jury of their peers found them guilty of murder.

When asked about Scarpa's help the FBI lied and took credit for the arrest. Now another group known for lying is the CIA...just check out Miami crime boss Trafficante's work on behalf of the CIA...Castro murder plot and The Bay of Pigs Invasion...funny how air support promised was denied.

Toxic Mushrooms (Fungi) Made Safe With Reindeer Urine

amanita_muscaria_fly_agaric%20(1).jpg

Reindeer.jpg

One theory of the cause of flying reindeer also explains Santa’s dress sense. It all comes down to one mushroom: Amanita muscaria, or fly agaric. Father Christmas’s colour scheme may be in honour of the white-speckled, red-capped mushroom so beloved of fairy tales. The mushroom is closely related to several highly toxic species such as the death cap (Amanita phalloides) and destroying angel (Amanita virosa). Freshly picked fly agaric contains ibotenic acid, which converts to muscimol when the mushroom is dried. Muscimol is a powerful hallucinogen, ten times more powerful than ibotenic acid.

Muscimol interacts with receptors in the brain resulting in hallucinations; inanimate objects appear alive, objects distort in size, time and space become distorted. It is probably eating the fly agaric mushroom that made Alice grow alternatively tall and short when she visited Wonderland. Other effects of the mushroom are less appealing and include anxiety, nausea, vomiting, twitching, convulsions and coma.

Fly agaric was the recreational drug of choice in several parts of Europe before vodka was introduced. Shamans of the tribes that herd reindeer in Siberia and Lapland would collect the mushrooms and carefully prepare them to optimise the mind-enhancing properties – and minimise the other dangerous toxins within the mushroom (of which there are several). The amount of muscimol also varies enormously from mushroom to mushroom, so trying this yourself is a risky business and definitely not advisable.

The shamans had the benefit of generations of practical knowledge and years of experience. They believed they could use the mushrooms to travel to the spirit realm in search of answers to local problems, such as a sudden outbreak of illness. The effect of the muscimol gave the impression of flying out through the chimney of the shaman’s abode and travelling to the spirit world where they could seek advice.

Muscimol passes through the body relatively unchanged which means that the shaman’s urine also had potent hallucinogenic properties. The effects of the mushroom can still be felt even if the drug has passed through five or six people and this is probably the origin of the phrase “getting pissed”.

Not true. There is absolutely nothing close to NYC/New Jersey pizza in California.
:(
Tony's Pizza Napoletana makes a variety of pizza styles including excellent New York variations. It has franchise outlets throughout the Bay Area where you can buy by the slice.

The Best Pizzeria In America
Nothing inspires foodie passion quite like pizza, one of the world’s most popular yet varied dishes. But because different people have different tastes and emphatic preferences in crusts, cheeses, toppings, shapes and even cooking fuel sources, there can be no such thing as the “best pizza.” But pizzerias are another story altogether, and America does have a best pizzeria, Tony’s in San Francisco, and it is so good I can’t think of a close second - except maybe Tony’s satellite locations.

I’m no newcomer to the pizza game, and for the past few years I have covered America’s finest and widely varied pizzas for my USAToday.com Great American Bites column, which explores the intricacies of local and heavily regionalized American cuisine. I’ve written on pizza for food magazines, inflight airline magazines and newspapers. I’ve been to just about every one of the nation’s highest profile pizza joints, from LA’s overhyped Mozza to Phoenix’ stunning Pizzeria Bianco to the classics of New Haven and of course New York City. I’ve done all the famous Chicago deep dish joints and explored the less well known St. Louis and Detroit styles. I’ve eaten VPN-certified wood fired pizza across the country, pizza served by the inch, California-style pizza at Spago, even the elusive Argentinean-style pizza in Denver. I’ve had breakfast pizza, dessert pizza, appetizer pizza and many badly misconceived pizzas. But I have never seen anything close to Tony’s Pizza Napoletana, in the traditionally Italian North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. I recently returned for another visit, and my memories were vindicated - I feel so strongly about this that for me a trip to the City by the Bay is wasted without a stop here.
