Del Potro, about his racquets and possible change (spanish)

Seriously, how you people are able to specifically distinguish one string to the next from a 3rd person's perspective, on an object that is moving fast and often results in a blur is beyond me.

This is some top quality bs here.

There is a guy here who talked directly with Delpo's team member - multiple people are corroborating. There are pictures here that verify it as well. It is really not that hard to tell gut mains or crosses since one can easily discern between two different types of strings. I'm all for being a skeptic but sometimes the proof is in the pudding, my friend :)

Here is the finest BS I could produce. The racquet is, for our purposes, stationary relative to the shutter speed of the camera. I did some high tech CSI work.

I trust someone with eyes on the string more than a photo though.

lol, that is some nice detective work! :)

He could be using a translucent multi for all I know, so until this security guard from indian wells gets on TT.TW we're just guessing.

If we had a photo like below of 9H-12H or 6T-12T it would be probably the best evidence you can get from a match photograph since the strings are side by side with light hitting them from the same angle of incidence.

lol - I'm not a huge skeptic and I trust people easily. I'll take my cousin's word (who was there at Stuttgart and got a signed shirt) and the guy here who posted that he talked to Delpo's team as well. Plus I have played long enough to tell strings apart and to me it looks like a hybrid, not a full bed. No bid deal though, whoever does not believe it is a hybrid is welcome to disagree with me. The last time I saw Delpo play in person he was playing with full bed ALU and his racquet/strings did not look like this. Just my $0.02. Cheers.

I can confirm his current string setup is:

Mains - Luxilon Big Banger Alu Power 17 @ 57.0 LBS
Crosses - Wilson Natural Gut 17 @ 57.0 LBS

Fantastic, this sort of stuff is what sucked me in to this message board. Notice the graphics say Burn FST 95A, makes me wonder if things go well for Del Potro if a autograph model is in the cards or if thats just the paintjob department having fun.

Can you comment to it being a standard or extended length racquet?.

That's cool how it's marked as 18x20 and says "classic feel", kind of like some of the new XT prestiges that say "MID"

actually the throat looks thin and square, more prostaff classic than hyperprostaff.

I'm looking at a classic right now and south of the bridge it isn't matching up, looks to be more of a oval with a flat top and bottom. It doesn't look hyper or classic to me. The flat top, pws that that taper in from the beam edge instead of flat out. The paint of the classic makes it look more boxy that it is, the right beam of the throat you can see the shape better.

It could be a custom mold or just that he is wrapping the overripe higher

Look where wilson is on the left throat in your photo, the W curves the whole way over without any corners or a flat plane. On Delpo's racquet the top of the W turns the corner to the flat top on the face of the throat.

Custom, prostock, or whatever it is I don't see hyper or classic in this photo.

Well if it really is a custom mold and not a classic or hyper with paint job eye tricks, I hope we get the FST95A deplo one day.

I agree. That throat/shaft "V" area does look very boxy. Definitely not a retail Burn mold nor PS 6.1 Classic/HPS 6.1 95 mold. Could this be a custom mold?

Did the last Six One have a bit of a shelf or flat edge to the face of the racquet in the throat? I haven't spent enough time with one to say, it looks possible but that might be due to the type on the top side of the throat. Otherwise custom with a hopeful future release as far as I can tell.

At the same location the RF97 and PS97 say "forgiving feel", 97S and 97LS say "precision feel", 95S "explosive feel". Burns and Blades have the similar text, and the Blade 98 says 'classic feel' as well.

The shape of the beam looks unlike any wilson I'm familiar with. Any previous models have a cross section like the delpo I mocked up below?

The latest Six.One, currently discontinued does have a flat plane in the throat, you can see it in the review intro when they do the studio product intro. Nothing else I've seen looks close.

I only have classics on hand so I very well could be wrong but the the least the PWS of the hyper you posted looks different than the Classic, which has more of a 'flat shelf' parallel to the face of the racquet.

The beam shape of these two models look different to me in the throat. It is subtle but the red throat text 'ETY FIVE' is a fluid curve. On the white throat 'graphite basalt matrix' sits on a small flat plane.

I definitely think is a new custom mold. Not just a paint over his original racket.
2ag22px.jpg

This was his racket from last year, 2015, at IW.

mttatl.jpg

In this pic, you can see the throat is significantly "boxier" than the previous racket.

Seeing as how Wilson discontinued the 6.1 line, maybe they are shifting that line over to the Burn FST line and tweaking the mold a little. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I really, really want Wilson to release a Delpo autograph racket like they have done for Federer. I'd buy it without even reading the specs.

Wilson Burn FST 95A, thats got to be the new racket hype. If they ever consider making it to the public, it wont be as much of getting their hands on the racket like Federers. But it will have our eyes on its specs and its construction

@ProStringing how many racquets did he have strung from what I've seen their is still no proof that he has switched and isn't still using just the two racquets. The grommets in the pic looks really worn too. Please shed some light on this I wanna have hope Wilson resolved this issue.

I mean he got a new paintjob and was getting around 5-6 racquets strung at Miami. I'm sure he got a new shipment after the US hardcourt swing early this year.

Here are a few more angles from Madrid, Stuttgart, and Aegon for your consideration.

Notable in the ProStringing photos: in the upper hoop were is says burn is followed by an orange box which might say FST, but that box is black with thin orange lines on the retail frames. I haven't seen an angle with detail of that area.

Hmmm....actually, in that picture above it doesn't look that boxy, but in this picture below it looks very boxy:

I think that angle makes the top throat edge look chunkier than it is. I think in the following the top edge look slightly wider than a PS97, but more ( ) than [ ]

I asked Juan Martin about his rackets a couple of days ago and they are the same as the ones he was using previously, however do not feel the same.

He would have continued using his old rackets but considering his break from tennis following his multiple wrist surgeries, he decided that it was time to get new rackets made.

Given his surgeries, and the resulting requirement to prolong his career, he switched to natural gut crosses. This could be the main reason that his new rackets do not feel like his old ones. Plus his old rackets had been used for many years, had been restrung hundreds of times and had hit tens of thousands of balls.

Juan Martin does not know what racket is under his paint scheme. The overwhelming majority of players do not know what racket is under their paint scheme. However they know if they like it or not; how the racket plays and feels is extremely important to the players, and they will test different rackets occasionally to see if there is anything better available to them.

Only the manufacturer knows the composition and exact specifications of the rackets they provide to the players. Although there are a few players with completely custom molds and string patterns (i.e. Alexandr Dolgopolov), I believe that the manufacturer will try to get most players to use of their “standard” molds and drill patterns. It costs a lot of time and money to create new custom molds and drill patterns, and it is much easier for them to use one of their current molds and tweak the composition or materials during the layup process to suit the player.

Back to Juan Martin’s rackets though.

I do not believe that he is using a custom mold. I believe he is using the same mold as the 6.1 line with a 95 square inch headsize and an 18 x 20 drill pattern.

Below are some comparison pictures between Juan Martin’s racket and two rackets from other Wilson sponsored players, Kyle Edmund (left) and Dusan Lajovic (right):

JuanMartinDelPotroRacket12.jpg

JuanMartinDelPotroRacket13.jpg

JuanMartinDelPotroRacket14.jpg

JuanMartinDelPotroRacket15.jpg

It is highly likely that there are differences in the composition and specifications of these rackets, however having held and studied them in detail, they all share the same mold, headsize and string pattern.

I hope this can help to clarify the situation with Juan Martin’s rackets.

So why 95A? Do they try to mimic Head codes?
I have two theories about why it's the 95A.
The first theory, and the one I want to be true is that he's getting his own autograph racket like Roger.
My second theory, is that it's not going to be released but is called the 95A so that Wilson can say he uses the fst line of rackets rather than just endorsing the 95.

A custom mold with the exact specs that he likes can be created by any of the racket companies. They have engineers that can do this for him. Why is this an issue for him to get a racket made? Donnay was able to do this for Agassi when he tried to go back to his Prince POG when he was under contract with them.

Agassi hated his Donnay frames and went back to playing the POG with the Donnay logo stenciled on the strings. This didn't fool the reps at Donnay and they agreed to recreate the specs and stiffness, balance etc. of the POG minus the distinct cross-bar on the throat. I guess it worked because he didn't play with doctored POG frames anymore.

Prototypes can be made to replicate just about any racket out there. Federer I heard went through many prototypes to have his new racket feel like his old trusty one, only with a larger head size.

In Delray he had a bunch of frames and his manager confirmed new frames not his old ones.

Speaking of Dusan can you tell me anything about his racquet. Do you know the specs of the uses lead anywhere (under the bumper maybe) strings and tension. He is lesser known player here on the boards but I always admired him being a one handed by myslef.

I'm not holding my breath, but a Delpo frame would be really cool. i'd be interested in seeing the specs vs. the 6.1 he's been using if they ever ended up doing that.

Holy lead Batman! Juan's swingweight must be off the charts..

As a 6.1 user, I would love to see a Delpo frame.
