Devin Britton vs Roger Federer

Anyone saw the game? From the score it seemed the kid played very very well... then again it could have been Fed putting on a little show for the crowd.

I don't know much about Devin other than what I read about him. Aggressive Serve and volleyer, youngest winner of the NCAA singles title and rated 1370 (???) ATP. I'd imagine going from NCAA to center court Ashe Stadium against #1 of all time (*hic*) can be nerve breaking all on its own.

I liked his post-match interview, very humble and actually honest.
"My goal is to not get crushed, (laughter) and make it interesting for a little while, at least, which I thought I got up a break a couple of times and that was fun for the little while that it lasted"

It will be interested watching him some more if he's doing that good against Roga.

it wasn't close actually...federer was in 2nd gear...if he was serious it'd be something like 6-1, 6-1, 6-2

seriously. federer was not even playing seriously.
he probably said, "oh he's young and just starting out in the pros. i'll let him have a good time so he doesnt beat himself too much."

Fed was slacking big time.

The kid had serious trouble keeping his groundstrokes in the court and his serves out of the net.

I think he wasnt prepared for dealing with so much action and pace on the groundstrokes coupled with the quick footspeed.

Britton got a good wake up call on what he will be facing if he wants to go pro.

Just seeing the highlights, Fed looked quite... lazy. He looked in 3rd gear to be honest...

Very nice and realistic interview.

The guy has a lot of humor  Seems like a very down to earth person.

LOL on him saying hitting to Roger's forehand just to see it.

i know, i'd do it too!

he said that he hit with nadal to get a feel for how heavy the ball would be, and that they both hit a similarly heavy ball. it's hard for me, who's never played at a high level of tennis, to appreciate how heavily guys like federer hit until you see a guy with pro aspirations just unable to handle his stock rally ball.

BUT

Britten became a visibly better player for an hour of being on court with Federer, and that wasn't just his nerves settling, it was the adjustments he made when faced with a new level. this bodes well. if i was him or a member of his team I'd be trying to get him out hitting with top players as much as possible, maybe Roddick and Blake could use him for instance.

I think that playing Federer is the best way to get used to being on the pro tour, just playing a single 5 set match with him no matter how short or long is an experience for a lifetime. Devin can now take this and add it into his game.
