Did Nalbandian or Davydenko ever have any real fans?

I mean the types of fans who wait for hours and hours to get an autographs at the airport or who make those great colourful signs in support of their favourite player or who paint their faces with their favourite player's name on it. Federer, Nadal and Djokovic get a lot of that. I just wonder what kind of fanbase if any players like Davydenko and Nalbandian had when they were in the top 8 all those years? Do fans only support Grand Slam champions?

I am a Nikolay fan for a long time. Love his groundstrokes and his serve. He has been down since the gambling scandal. He was top 5 for a while. But now; he just needs to get back the mental edge and the steady play to get back to at least top 20!

My friend Michael is a big Nalbandian fan.

Regarding Djokovic, I don't think he's anywhere near Federer and Nadal in terms of fanbase.

You're right but regardless, there are still tens of thousands of fans greeting Djokovic at the airport and treating him like a rock star wherever he goes. I just don't recall players like Denko and Nalbandian getting that back when they were in the top 10. I mean I remember Davydenko saying that if he looked like Safin, he'd have many more fans wanting his autograph.

Did you see the support Novak got in China?

Yeah, it was Michael Jackson level turnout with people going nuts over him. I never saw Davydenko or Nalbandian getting that kind of love from fans when they were top 10 players. Which leads me to think that either those guys just didn't care about their fans or fans in general don't support you unless you're a Slam winner or have son some amazing stuff in your career.
I remember Sampras saying that when he helped the US win Davis Cup, he was upset that nobody came to greet him at the airport when he came home. He lost his love for Davis Cup based on that it seemed.

Why would two mugs who never won a slam get as much fan attention as three guys who all have multiple slams?

So obviously it's only about Slams. You need a Slam if you're going to get a fanbase. I guess that puts Murray's stock up quite a bit now.

^^ You have thread fatigue, sir. Take a rest. Fans support people they like. Vince Spadea is still talked about affectionately on this board because he was delightful in spite of a record losing streak. Monfils has never won a major but draws large crowds because he has an engaging personality. The Chicago Cubs haven't won a world series since three years before the death of Tolstoy but sell out Wrigley Field because they have always been known as "the lovable losers." Winning majors has very little to do with it. Ivan Lendl won plenty of majors but Donald Dell, who handled his business affairs during Lendl's playing days, talks about how hard it was to get endorsements for Lendl because he never smiled. Nalbandian and Davydenko doubtless have supporters in their own countries primarily but I doubt either has ever achieved any sort of cult status elsewhere because their public personas are generally rather grim (if not scandalous and sociopathic, in the case of Davydenko).
