At the time the grand slam count was.

Federer 20
Nadal 18
Djokovic 15

Djokovic winning kept the gap between Federer and Nadal to 2 - it was a couple of inches and an ace from being 3. Within three months the gap was down to 1.

A huge moment in the slam race. My feelings were if Federer got to 21, Nadal would never catch him. So at the time it felt that Djokovic winning was the right result for Nadal fans.

But now it looks slightly different.

Federer will surely not get to 21 and its a straight shoot-out between Nadal and Djokovic for the all time male slam winner.

Who did you support at the time? Was it down to the slam race or a preference for either player? And do you think differently now as things panned out.

Interested in any thoughts.

Why would Fed not get to 21 or 22 ? My money on Fed 21 or 22, i can see that happening, Rafa 25.

As a Rafa fan, I rooted for Fed. It was nothing to do with the slam race in answer to your question, it was simply that I had no wish to see Djokovic win Wimbledon again.
As Rafa is five years younger than Roger, if Roger had gained another slam, it wouldn’t have meant Rafa couldn’t achieve the same as he had years left to do so. I could easily have been wrong, but that was my feeling at the time.

I was torn. I wanted Federer to win for tennis reasons, Djokovic because of the slam race. It felt 50:50 As the match wore on I wanted Federer to win more and more. It ended up being a great sporting injustice and made worse when you bundle 2018 in too (ultra close match, roof gate etc).

Cry me a rive about sporting injustice when Fed feasted on a choking Roddick in 2009 Wimbledon final.

Federer of course! I felt bad he didn't win.

I feel bad that 40-15 didn't make you laugh, when it happens once it's a tragedy but when it happens thrice it's a comedy ( dark) :D :D

Edit- hey op why didn't you display the votes in public , there are many non Rafans voting lol.

I was pulling for Joker in Wimby 2014 and 2015. He was still far enough away from RAFA, and I was holding on to hope that RAFA could still pass Ol’ Rog’s schlem count.

I supported Ol’ Rog in 2019 because I thought that Joker would then pass RAFA before RAFA passed Ol’ Rog. The 2019 USO was massive not just for RAFA’s 2019 season, but for the GOAT race as a whole.

Novak for multiple reasons. No regrets, if anything I think it was one of the most thrilling outcomes in recent memory.
very bad comrade!

I supported Djokovic and have no regrets. The crowd behaviour was pathetic as was the British media coverage so wanted Djokovic to win to shut them all up. There was an image of one woman who.looked a typical pimms drinker who has no clue about the sport holding one finger up at MP for Roger. Her sense of entitlement was so blatant so it was nice Djokovic broke their hearts.
I was sad for Federer. I love Federer. I love Novak. Obviously love Rafa even more. But i hated seeing Roger having to smile throught he teophy ceremony. The pleasure of that match was the epic shut down of the crowd and the Royal box. None of which is disrespect to Federer at all. Id love hin to win one more Wimbkedon. Id love Djokovic to win one more Australian and have a Morrrison and Hawke T shirt on under his main t shirt that he shoes to the crowd at the trophy ceremony. And id liek Rafa to win 2 more slams. One more FO and USO. Then it would be perfect. I think it is possible to have affection for all the abig 3 after all these years.

Federer, and I have no regrets because

1) he's been my 2nd favourite player after Nadal
2) Djokovic deserved karmic justice after the steal of previous year's semi

Yes, it's very common for 41 and 42 year olds to win slams.
Roger could win Wimbledon again if his knees were pain free simply because the tour is so bad. Nadal and Djokovic are shadows of what they were and are still easily the best players in the world. Roger has the talent and nobody apart from Nadal and Djokovic can play on grass. FAA can but imagine him in a wimbledon final. He would lose to the big 3 aged 55 as he would be that tight.
Sadly my gut feeling is Rogers knees are shot. As is Rafas foot. It probably always was injury that would stop them as nobody apart from Djokovic was remotely close to them

Rafa was as nervous as ive ever seen him at USO 2019 and it felt at the time that event was crucial to GOAT debate. With his FO dominsnce i think he felt getting within one was a big deal

I was supporting Federer because I prefer him than Djokovic, and also because watching a nearly 38 yo player beating Nadal and Djoko b2b felt like I was witnessing a really special moment.

Then came the wtf later that year, for the rematch, and I was so disgusted by the pathetic attitude of the crowd towards Djokovic (it felt like basically 90% of the crowd genuinely thought Djoko was an EVIL MONSTER WHO DARED STEALING OUR VICTORY, THAT CRIMINAL), that it shifted my mindset, I am so glad that 40-15 happened

I feel as if justice was served that day...with all the disrespect a great champ like Djoker received from the crowd...to win in an epic fashion was very satisfying.

The crowd at Wimbledon was worse than WTF i think. Djokovic was being heckled by members of the Royal Box if i recall or at least wound up by their exuberance for Roger. Im sure the rules in Royal Box are to not be partisan!

Definitely possible, I watched Wim with friends and was mostly talking throughout the match, I wasn't as aware as for the wtf match that I saw alone

Djokovic and how's that even a question? Lol. It was a karmic justice after smug crowd insulted Djokovic , showed no respect to the great champion. Btw i laughed hard at 40-15 choke , i felt sad for Fed at us open though but when it happens time and again tragedy becomes comdey .

I supported Novak Djokovic.

P. S.: still, I felt a bit bad for the way Roger lost. Arguably the toughest loss in tennis history if we consider what was on the line and how it was produced.

IMO the crowd wasn't being disrespectful. I can't fault them for cheering on the old man. Federer used to face the same treatment back in his day whenever he played Andre.

Cheering on the old man is not what they did. They absolutely didn't care what happened, I am sure if Djokovic had double faulted on every point and moonballing on the return, losing 6-0 6-0 in 3 hours, those people would have had the exact same experience. They just desperately needed a result. This is the kind of match that make me ashamed to follow tennis, I wouldn't dare telling people at a party that I watch tennis because I would be horrified at the idea that they think me as "the average tennis fan"

I didn't mind either way.
Federer had less left in the tank, so him going to 21 would probably have been his final slam title, and I always expected Nadal to win 25+ slams anyway.
Djokovic going to 16 would not have hurt Nadal, because Nadal has/had plenty in the tank and would push the slam race beyond Djokovic's reach....
I honestly couldn't make up my mind.

It was a Davis Cup atmosphere. I know this is a hot take, but IMO there's no disrespect to cheering an opponent's errors. As long as you're not booing, interrupting, insulting the opponent, etc.

They booed him. They vaguely applauded him once or twice, when Djokovic pulled a miraculous shot or something. I think this is pathetic, they disrespected themselves more than they disrespected Djokovic. I think this kind of behaviour is acceptable when you are 12

I mean, why people would support Djokovic just to "s. on the crowd" is beyond me.
Wouldn't blame older Nadal fans who grew up hating on Roger, but newer ones? Really?
