Djokovic to play Adelaide 2020

Probably a very lucrative offer by the tournament. He shouldn't need that much tennis before the AO, he never did.

Strange decision, even coming from a Djoker fan.
He should not jeopardise any chance of a record extending 8th AO title.

He is preparing for the case of being thrown out of the tournament by a GOATing aggressive player (irrespective of his name), which is what will happen.

I think it's obvious he just wants to get the number 1 spot even before AO.

That isn't possible. His fans on social media assume me that seeking out "easy" titles in order to get points for the No 1 spot is a practice only undertaken by the lowest of the low. Novak despises such things.

But that’s impossible, he’s over 800 points behind.

So likely he wants to test on Green Set. But on the other hand, isn’t that the surface at the ATP Cup as well then?
ATP Cup gives 750 points, so another 250 tournament is more than enough for him. I'm pretty sure this is the only reason why he plays it. Well, Nadal will probably still get the first seed at AO (because the draw will probably come before this small tournament ends) but yeah, he can formally lose the #1 spot before AO.

Okay, but how is that possible?

1) Djokovic has to defend 90 points before AO from Doha this year, so Nadal’s lead actually is rather 930 points
2) Points are awarded on ranking of the opponent at the ATP Cup, so 750 points is out of reach anyway
3) Serbia must reach the final, which is highly unlikely, no matter what Djokovic alone does
4) Nadal will also make points at the ATP Cup

If I was a Djoker fan I'd be worried about him peaking against Millman in Adelaide, and then bombing out early in AO against Tsitsipants.

Look, it is weird, but I doubt he actually plays it. Very easy for a tourney like this to give him money knowing he will likely back out.

If ATP Cup is short for him, I see him playing, otherwise I think the plan will be to withdrawal.

It is a unusual and surprising decision to play the ATP 250 tournament a week before the GS tournament. In the past, Novak played his first official match of the new season till at the AO, now he will take part in two events before the AO.
As some have already said, this is obviously related to the change of hard surface to AO, since 2020 will be GreenSet and HC from the same company will be delivered to tournament of Adelaide, so Djoker wants to try the surface + to get another ATP title.

I know this is a Djokovic thread, and I'm not trying to derail it, but Medvedev is doing the same with Auckland. I do wonder how serious these top players are and how much it really depends on the ATP Cup results.

I don’t think money is offered for players only because they act as if they plan to play a tournament and then withdraw. Why should a tournament director do this?

Ticket sales. They slap Djoker's photo on their website and promise his appearance and sales immediately go up.

Well if they know he was not going to play from the get go, it increases their sales and it is free publicity and marketing.

Many were upset with Fed for doing it with the ATP Cup and believe he did this as well. We will see if he actually plays. Doubt he will.

What's so funny about it?
At this stage, there's no better fast HC player than federer who can defeat or even push a well playing djok at AO.... Even if the old man is heavily diminished

It is my reaction seeing how Djoke is considered a "fast court" monster nowadays. Don't worry, a Tsitsipas or Kyrgios kind of player can dispose of him on medium (fast) HC.

I don’t doubt such seedy arrangements happen, but regularly and (quite) openly? IMO that is a form of scam. And surely Djokovic doesn’t need that money. He doesn’t even need to think about such things anymore.

Well..
Djok will certainly not go down to Kyrgious in a BO5
And tsitsipas will most probably not make it there

No, it doesn't. In practice no player will achieve 750 points as it requires and extraordinary combination (to face top 10 players in all rounds and to stay undefeated both in singles and doubles).

Check out the ATP Cup points' distribution in Wikipedia:

Not true. Djokovic won the Davis Cup with Serbia in 2010, so Serbia reaching the final is not something unheard of. And this year Serbia had chances to reach the final. Serbia lost by a MIRACLE against Russia, despite having multiple match points in the decissive match.

I am not saying Serbia is a great team outside Nole, but to say that it is "highly unlikely" for them to reach the final is a bit too much.

There is no realistic way for Djokovic to regain the #1 spot before the AO, so I doubt that is his motivation

Javier Sanchez Vicario, the owner of Greenset is Spanish. That is all you need to know. Jk, I am sure they would never slow the courts for Rafa... :sneaky:
Courier and Gilbert dissent. Laver just said Sunday the AO will be "faster." Greenset is not new, it's been used at the following tournaments/events:

All of those tournaments have court index speeds significantly above IW, Miami, even Cincy. This has absolutely nothing to do with nationality. The fact is that almost all of the Greenset events have been faster than normal, without exception.
