Dominic Thiem denies players are getting special treatment in Adelaide.

“It’s a privilege to be here in Adelaide. But it’s not that huge an advantage,” Thiem said on Thursday. “We get the same amount of practice time as the guys in Melbourne. It’s just not that busy on-site. It’s just that we are [fewer] players here. Compared to the players who are not in hard quarantine in Melbourne, we have pretty similar conditions.
“It’s pretty strict,” he said. “It’s 19 hours in the room and five hours out. We’re allowed to practise two hours a day. Besides that, we get a car to the site. Food, they deliver it in front of the room and we take it. In general, they did an amazing effort to make it as good as possible.

“The only really bad and unlucky thing are the 72 players in the hard quarantine. For them, it’s going to be really tough to play a good ATP Cup or good tournament before the Australian Open and then a good Australian Open. They have a huge disadvantage, but that’s the risk we take when we go on to a plane nowadays.”

"But it's not THAT huge an advantage" means there are some advantage for top players, it's just not HUGE.
"They have a huge disadvantage ..." means that 4 hours per day out of a room is more valuable than one would think.

Title is wrong. Thiem acknowledges special treatment, just qualifies it as not being HUGE.

A great down to earth respectful guy. A few top players could take notes.

He's saying its not much of an advantage compared to the guys not in quarantine which is probably true. But why are they in Adelaide anyways?

weren't the top dogs scheduled to play an exho in Adelaide?
I don't know? I'm just confused about what the big advantages Nadal, Djokovic and Thiem are getting? They are advantaged over people in quarantine but they supposedly have the same privileges as those who are not, so why all the outrage? I must be missing information.

Thiem to me is like a big friendly oaf. He has no brains at all. I like him, but it's worrying for the sport. He lacks Federer's charm and Nadal's diplomacy and tact and he lacks Djokovic's quirkiness (the politest way I could put it). If Thiem is No.1, you guys are going to be wishing for the era that gave us Rios, Muster, Kafelnikov as No.1, etc.

The decision to redirect the top three men and women players to quarantine in AdeIaide was made at the beginning of January.

Reuters, January 8, 2021: ¤¤ Tennis Australia Chief Executive Craig Tiley said the organisers needed a second city to ensure they did not exceed the limit set by the authorities for people quarantining in Melbourne.
Adelaide will now host the top three men and women players, including Ash Barty and Simona Halep, who will also play an exhibition event before heading to Melbourne for warmup events to be played at the Australian Open venue from Jan. 31.
“We approached the South Australian government about the possibility of them quarantining at least 50 people,” Tiley told Tennis Channel.
“But they wouldn’t have any interest in doing it, because there’s no benefit to them to put their whole community at risk.
“But it would be a benefit if there was an exhibition just before Melbourne. So we chose the top three men and top three women and they’ll play an exhibition on the 29th and 30th of January.”
The players will be allowed five hours outside their hotel rooms to train during the 14-day quarantine and Tiley confirmed that health regulations would be the same in Adelaide. ¤¤

considering that Melboune population is 5 Mio people, and the state Victoria should be at almost 7 Mio people, I'm sure that their utmost consideration was to "not exceed the limit set by the authorities for people quarantining in Melbourne"
is Adelaide perhaps the nearest place to Melbourne where people live and have hotels & tennis courts?

and why not take a different approach?
let the top players & their teams live in Melbourne, with other players, while some other folks could be hosted in Bendigo, Peterborough, Morwell, Warnambool, if the whole thing is due to "not exceed the limit set by the authorities for people quarantining in Melbourne"?

let me guess, because everything that is written in internet is ultimate truth?

Ask Craig Tiley these questions.

Why AO organisers is making big deal of quarantine thing anyway. Didn't hear about it so much about it in RG/USO.
Because those countries were already overrun with Covid losing people to the virus each day. Australia has no community transmission and hasn’t recorded a death in over a month. We kept the virus at bay. Look at the UK and US stats today vs ours.

Sorry, how is it a privilege to be away in Adelaide when others are training on the real AO courts in Melbourne?
Rafa, Thiem et al will lose a day for an exho, will waste time flying in to Melbourne and only hit the ao courts a week before AO

Is that last year? I honestly didn't think they had fans there.

Not that I'd know, haven't watched dirt tennis in well over 30 years.

Yep, was a nice change of pace from no one at the US Open. And sorry to hear that, you've missed much epic tennis :D

Thiem is not big enough of a factor yet for me to worry about his influence on the game. One slam where he got outchoked by a fellow choker doesn't make him a dominant force in tennis.
