Dominic Thiem Serve

Thought it would be interesting to make a thread about Dominic Thiem's constantly evolving serve. Originally had a pinpoint serve in his Jr and early pro years.

He then went to somewhere in between pinpoint and platform. Slight toe drag

Now he has a traditional platform

What do you think about it. I personally think its the most beautiful and fluid motion on tour. My favorite serve. His kick, especially on the ad court is amazing. Do you think he over uses the kick serve. Should he flatten it out more? Does his ball toss veer to far to the left? Just trying to create some discussion.

It works against people who don't take it on, he was taken apart by people like Tsonga, Nishikori and Djokovic in 2016 by not having any real way to win fee points.

But to me his return of serve is much worse especially on the deuce side in a match like his one against Nishikori in Rome, he was totally ineffective against the serve outwide.

Trophy position is a bit reminiscent of Roddick, with the tip of his racket facing to his right when his racket is moving slowly. Not as explosive though.

He has certainly changed his right arm take back over the years. I swear I saw a video of him at one point where he was using a very abbreviated take back similar to Roddick.

Here are some other good videos of his serve:

It's interesting how he really seems to exaggerate the finish on his warm-up serves.
Yes ... he has tried an abbreviated swing a couple of times, including last year on the clay. Personally not a fan of that change ... prefer his longer more fluid motion, though he did seem to get more pace with the change, but lost some accuracy. Love how he was serving at IW this year!
