Europe Vs The Rest Of The World

Watching the Ryder Cup has made me think of how great it would be to have a one off or maybe even regular tennis tournament of Europe v The Rest Of The World. So assuming we did have a competition like this going who would be in your team? Lets work on the basis of the top 8 players in the rankings automatically qualify and you can have 4 captains picks. My team would therefore be:

Europe (top 8 in rankings automatically qualify)

Nadal (Spain)
Federer (Switzerland)
Djokovic (Serbia)
Murray (Great Britain)
Soderling (Sweden)
Davydenko (Russia)
Berdych (Czech)
Verdasco (Spain)

Wild Cards x4
Cillic (Croatia)
Ferrer (Spain)
Tsonga (France)
Baghdatis (Cyprus)

Rest of The World

Andy Roddick (USA)
Mardy Fish (USA)
Sam Querrey (USA)
Isner (USA)
Belluci (Brazil)
Nalbandian(ARG)
Juan Monaco (ARG)
Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG)

Wild Cards x 4
Lleyton Hewitt (Australia)
Fernando Gonzalez (Chile)
Leonardo Mayer (ARG)
Allejandro Falla (Columbia)

How would this work surface-wise? Would it be held on a different surface each tournament, or would each tournament include all the surfaces?

I was thinking that this type of tournament would be great as an overall replacement for the end of season championships and could be held at a venue in europe or the rest of the world. This means you could use all 4 grandlsam sites or masters series sites.

I actually like the idea. In fact I'm convinced that it would be better qualitywise and more interesting than the Davis cup. In fact what is everybody waiting for? They sould copy the current Ryder cup format (after all, other tennis things like grand slams and the open concept are imports from the golf world)

Amazing how the tennis-world has been inferior to the golf world in terms of organization and leadership for almost a century.

I say do it! Better late than never. Change the damned format of the Davis cup or ditch it altogether and set up a multi-continent event. It's far more logical than "USA vs. Switzerland" or (in Fed cup) Russia vs. whatever-other-country
.

At the moment it'd be a bloodbath, it's not even funny. However, Hewitt, Nalbandian, Del Potro and roddicks in their repsective primes would be a match up for anyone in one off davis cup style matches. Would be interesting to see.

OP- great idea! I was thinking the same thing when I was watching the opening ceremony of the Ryder Cup. What prestige and tradition they have for golf, something which tennis is sorely lacking at the moment in terms of team competition. Those people in charge pf Davis Cup should revamp the whole system and organise something with more pomp and class, just like those golf organisations have done with their sport

We Europeans are just the best at everything. We play better sports, we have better women and we make better cars.
Don't forget better drugs. Back on your meds!

The Olympics are all that's needed now that tennis is included. Davis Cup is a mess. And making some faux-Ryder Cup isn't really going to work either.

I'd rather just see the calendar compressed and give the players more time to rest. Tennis is singles and doubles - these team events aren't necessary.
