Federer Finishing 2014 #2 would still be very satisfying

I know as a Federer fanatic, I can be very greedy when it comes to his achievements and wins, but I think if he somehow finished 2014 #2, it would be very satisfying.

It would further extend his record of 10 years in the top 2, which would deny Nadal from tying his record at 9 years.

Oldest year end #2.

It would shut up critics who say he played in a weak era from 2003-2007.

It would mean that since Nadal entered his prime and Federer and left his prime (or at least Nadal wrestled #1 ranking away from Federer and I never expected Federer to get it back), Summer 2008, Federer would have finished with a higher year end ranking than Nadal in 4 out of the last 7 years.

You are a Federer fanatic? I didn't realize that. I thought you just like creating threads about simple facts. If facts have pro Federer and anti Nadal bias then that's not your fault.

I think you're wrong in terms of his prime level (Federer played at his prime level until early 2010) but apart from that, it sounds good. Federer ending 2014 at 2 would be very satisfying and it would show that he can bounce back from a bad season to become competitive with the best again.

Federer is my favorite of all time but after 2012 it's been incredibly hard to get excited for any of this nonsense.

Anyone getting excited this year is a glory hunter, pure and simple. He hasn't had any extraordinary or exciting wins all season. It's like watching someone knocking over paraplegics to get to the front of the line.

It's time to move on. Give me a f*cking new generation to get excited about already.

You didn't need to make that comment at all and I shall take the high road here.

Fed has been class to get back to where he is.

He's been in 8 finals this year. 1 Grand Slam, 4 Masters 1000's, a 500, and 2 250's. Pitiful right?

Anyway, he's had tons of exciting matches. AO 4R and QF, Dubai SF and F Indian Wells F, Monte Carlo SF, Wimbledon SF and F, and the last 2 tournaments have had a lot of close matches (some of them agonizing to watch) with some being very high level tennis.

This forum needs a counterweight to all the people like OP cheering on the death of tennis.

If Federer was playing lights out I'd join the party, but it's obvious how much he's declined. The only reason he's number 2 is because all his decent contemporaries (Nadal, Berdych, Djokovic, Murray, Tsonga, Del Potro) are out to lunch and none of the "young" players (read: 23 year olds waiting for Fedalovic to retire) can make a dent.

As a tennis fan it's hard to watch. Federer being #2 while playing this way is not satisfying at all unless you live and die by his success.

I agree. I love seeing Federer win but I don't even like watching him anymore. Way too much Fed_error and not enough Federer magic. Jaw dropping excitement of 2003-2007 Fed is gone. :(

There is nobody that exciting to watch anymore to be honest.

Well now i can't see how Federer would not end number 2 in the world in november, but why giving so much credit when he was 5K points behind Nadal after Wimbledon?

I cant find a single fault in this post, I agree with everything you say here. Murray/Berdych/Tsonga have all dropped off this year. Nadal/Delpo out again and Djokovic being the sole rival to Federer right now is pretty horrendous for the state of tennis.

Watching how Wimbledon unfolded filled me with a little hope that maybe we were seing the passing of the torch with both Dimitrov/Raonic making the semi final. Then to see them both dismissed with relative ease just put a stamp on how the next 10 years of tennis are going to be awful. It will be hard to apreciate whoever comes out on top during it because, deep down, i know that any of the big 4 (Ferrer too) would be dominanting it otherwise.

GOAT getting excited about #2? I seriously doubt it.

I can't see him rounding up the grandkids in 30 yrs to tell them about his run to 2nd place in the rankings...

10 years in the top 2 would be very impressive.

Also 11 years between first being #2 (2003) and presumably last year being #2 (2014)

That is incredibly longevity.

I don't know how much you guys remember but Federer does not care much about #2, #3, #4 etc. I remember him saying "if it is for #1, yes but it does not matter whether you are #2, #3, or what"

So, he is aiming for YE # 1 in my opinion.

Rewatch that Dimitrov - Djokovic SF, do yourself the favor. It was a high quality match where Djokovic struggled against Dimitrov, prevailing only in a very tight 4 setter. It could have gone either way really.

I agree on Raonic though... He has no chance against a good returner and shotmaker.

what do you expect Federer is not in his prime anymore that Federer is gone forever.he is nearing the end and is still hanging with the best you cant ask for anything more.

It would be great, but what really matters is that he is playing well.

Do I smell a general consensus, that the homogenization, for the most part, has brought much grief to the sport?

Good that we are not looking at that problem only from the Federer vs. Nadal prism any more.

Again with this treason? ;) The funny thing is all the Federer fans, not just the objective ones like the Mr. Snrub, have been saying for months and months how ready they are for new players and how weak the era is. Hell, they're STILL talking about draws from 2010. As soon as Wimbledon was over, there's nothing wrong with the tour at all and the 90's generation is suddenly amazing.

Actually, the people want new players, because:

1) they are spoiled - they watch not because they love the sport, but because they want entretainment and part of this entertainment includes new entertainers. It is pretty sad as they (the viewers) will always have something in their games that they can work on watching the same old farts.

2) they are wording wrongly their desperation for a change in the brand of tennis that we are witnessing to dominate in the last decade (with several notable exceptions to this (including Federer)) not least because of the surfaces homogenization.

I am curious if you can produce a substantial proof about that "as soon as the Wimbledon was over" part.

There was an overall excitement about Dimitrov and Nishi throughout the year. If anything, Dimitrov's performances after Wimbledon was unexpectedly bad (so far) so I am curious to know what you mean by your last sentence.

Totally, Federer's 2014 has been unexpected but wonderful. Especially given how he has so much going on outside of tennis. I know this with just one child!

But he said that years ago when he was still in his prime.

Maybe this year he has more realistic goals.

Hang on a second. If Federer finishes #2 in 2014...

Last 7 years:

2008: Nadal #1, Fed #2
2009: Fed #1, Nadal #2
2010: Nadal #1, Fed #2
2011: Nadal #2, Fed #3
2012: Fed #2, Nadal #4
2013: Nadal #1, Fed #6
2014: Fed #2, Nadal #3 - hypothetically

Wouldn't it be 3 out of the last 7 years as bolded, as opposed to 4 out of 7 like you say?
