Federer: "I'm so happy for Nadal. His US OPEN victory was unbelievable!"

Why did Federer want Nadal to win so bad?

I'm not surprise with this statement from the old man. Just like Berdych, they sacrifice their pride. and their competitiveness to show compassion to the one who doesn't give a crap if you like him or you don't. No wonder they always get spanked by Rafito.

While I agree in part, surely you can't be serious in putting Federer in the same category as this:

Federer a lapdog??? Then what is Djokovic? Why did he get beat 22 times by Nadal?

LOL .... Djokovic beat rampaging Nadal in 3 slams at the biggest of stages. What are you talking about?

Fed has never managed to win against Nadal since 2008 in Grand slam.

Fed cannot even beta NAdal in hard courts in best of 3 for a long time now.

Seriously what are you talking about?

It's still unnecessary. He should of just said, "Rafa's played well all year and deserves the No.1 spot".

His statement reeks of fanboyism.

I still wouldn't go that far. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he was just overcompensating and being diplomatically effusive in his praise.

Yeah probably. He's just trying to make some friends from the BAMOS! brigade, if that's possible. ;)

Where's option where Federer is talking out of his backside.

Either he's just gone cuckoo or Godsick is wielding more power than we realise.

That's almost two years old. And it was in response to some comments by Fed which weren't exactly friendly.

Lol, so true :)
They must be so disappointed, lol
.

Yeah....can't believe the run Nadal had. It was such a glorious hope when he lost to Zeballos.....then Monte Carlo....then he crushed the hopes at the French.

No. He doesn't do this to anyone. He would never do such things like this for Djokovic.

Federer is a fan of tennis. Plus, he and Nadal get along well. I think that he is being genuine and congratulating Nadal. He can appreciate that Nadal had to face adversity, yet Nadal was able to come back strong. He played better than ever on hard courts. Federer was happy because he knew how much it meant to Nadal. I think he understands that it's good for tennis as well.

We all know Federer likes Nadal but this was a really classy thing for him to say, because after all, Nadal's trying to catch Federer's slam count and if I were Federer I would not want Nadal to win. Or maybe it was because Federer dislike Djokovic so much that he wanted Nadal to win regardless of the fact that his slam count is caught up by him. I would never imagine him say things like this for Djokovic or Murray.

So here's a poll for your guys! :)
Fred does not dislike Noel. You are trying to make your opinion sound like a fact.

like i said we need more guys like Gulbis or Janowicz, tennis fans don't give a crap about gentleman sissy stuff, we want blood on the court.

Nadal also says Federer is the greatest blah blah after beating him...what these guys say in public isn't always true...but Federer is usually far more honest and straightforward in his interviews.

He used to be... he stopped being too candid somewhere around 2007 after the unwarranted flack he kept getting from fans and the press for whom every statement he uttered was some sort cryptic riddle that needed to be decontextualized and read between the lines to reveal the true insidious message hidden within.

Yeah true...but between Nadal and Federer, it's not even close. Federer doesn't say I have to play against the toughest opponent in the world and play the best tennis I have ever played to beat him when he's facing someone ranked outside 100...

Novak's the same, "Rafa's the greatest etc...or "Fed's the greatest etc..." it's great PR.

That poster was lying though.

No doubt! Not only is Nadal's false modesty nauseating, it is clearly cover for extreme arrogance and self-belief, as well as a pre-emptive tactic used to psyche his opponents out. Remember how irritated Roger used to get by Nadal persistently deeming him the favorite prior to their encounters on clay in 2006/2007.

One need only take note of his behavior on court on the rare occassion his "lessers" manage to get underneath the skin of "humble" St. Rafa.

and guess who this year lost to opponents outside top 100 ?

Nadal one time,
Federer 2 times

That proves one thing, Nadal is right to not underestimate any opponent. This attitude is for me one of the reasons why he became such a champion.

Fed is 32 and Nadal is 27. Big difference. Federer was not losing to 100+ players int he most prestigious major two years in a row when he was 27.

It's one thing to underestimate them...It's another to say I have to play the best tennis of my life to beat them....That is just PR BS!

You have to be very naive to think he believes that.

I believe it's the way he was educated.
Maybe it's a way to stay focus all the time, I dunno, after reading his autobiography you have to say this guy is really not the "normal" guy, he is extremely insecure. He's probably 10 times more insecure than a guy like Sampras.

Uncle Toni says Rafa gets very nervous in the first week of RG despite everything he's achieved there.

Despite his great success and dominance over his rivals, Rafa IMO doesn't believe he's the best of 'em all. Most prolly because he knows how tough it is to play and beat guys like Novak and even Roger.

Rafa like Roger has some arrogance in him too. We all have it esp if you happen to be very good at something and then unexpectedly lose to someone you're not expected to lose to.

Rafa's not perfect. Deal with it.

He did Rosol credit though, he said Rosol played "unbelievable" tennis in the 5th set and gave him no chance.

I thought maybe he wanted to say something nice to Rafa and ended up saying something like that.

If he says it now would have made more sense. Not in 2011 lol, Nadal had just 9 slams then.

and here's how Nadal returns the favor

Nadal criticizes Federer for lack of support

“For him, it’s good to say nothing,” Nadal said in comments translated from Spanish. “Everything positive. ‘It’s all well and good for me, I look like a gentleman,’ and the rest can burn themselves. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinions.”

http://tennis.si.com/2012/01/15/nadal-criticizes-federer-for-lack-of-support/

Just in case your powers of research only allow you to find old quotes that suit your agenda, here's one from today.

QUOTE from the Atp site.
Nadal closed his pre-tournament press conference by voicing his support for long-time rival Federer, whom he fully expects to see alongside him at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London next month.

“He’s going to go, he’s going to qualify. I am sure of that,” said Nadal. “He is not going to have a problem. Even if he doesn't have lots of points of advantage, I feel he always played well in this last part of the season. He likes to play in these tournaments. He always had the positive results. I really feel that he will do it. He's a great player and I am sure he will be there and fighting for the title.”

I bet Roger is still lingering in the ATP circuit because he knows that there are still favorable chances of grabbing 18th and thus, keeping Rafa away from record.

I more think it's the high 8-figures he makes each year. Sure he's got a lot of money already, but it's rarely enough and hard to walk away from making so much more.

Regardless, good to see him out there. I hope he can regain some of his form as he's been fun to watch over the years, but I'm not sure any resurgence will be enough with Nadal, Djokovic and Murray so on-song.

Never said Federer is perfect did I? :-? Why do you have to bring in to every discussion about Nadal. It's like an automatic self defense mechanism with all the Nadal fans to start talking about Federer when someone criticizes Nadal.

I responding to tipsadon'tlike because he made it sound like Nadal is this perfect humble person who genuinely thinks of the 100+ ranked players as great champions who he has to fight for his life against.

My opponent played well for one set but the reason I lost is because I didn't play well in the rest of the match is not exactly giving credit.

Q. What happened out there? Was he just too good?
RAFAEL NADAL: Oh, c'mon. That's too simple. In the fifth, yes. Not before, no? In the fifth set he played more than unbelievable. That's fine.
Before, first three sets, I didn't play well.

Crisstti, you are one of my favorite Nadal fans here, because I think you are quite fair, while supporting your player.

But, on this comment, I would like to say, that Fed's rival was also five years younger and entering his prime/peak at that time, as Federer headed out of his.

Nadal's chief rival now is only a year younger, and while Nadal has played more matches than Djokovic, the mileage is no where near the difference that Federer has with Nadal.

Five years in tennis is a long time.

Well, I was answering to a hater :)

But still, while what you say it's true (though Rafa is roughly the same age Fed was in 2008 or 9), managing to rather consistently beat a main rival who had had his number for a while and lost big matches against is something that Rafa has and Fed doesn't, while being more consistent (QF and semis streaks for example) is something which Fed has over Rafa.

BTW, hope you have a great time at the WTF. Which match(es) are you planning on attending?.
