Former world No 1 Roger Federer has split with coach Paul Annacone after three and a half years.

The Swiss has slipped to seventh in the world - his lowest ranking for over a decade - and saw his hopes of reaching next month's end-of-season ATP World Tour Finals in London dented on Thursday by his third-round exit from the Shanghai Masters at the hands of Gael Monfils.

'After a terrific three and a half years working together, Paul and I have decided to move on to the next chapter in our professional lives,' the 32-year-old said in a statement on www.rogerfederer.com.

'When we started together we had a vision of a three-year plan to win another grand slam title and get back to the number one ranking.

'Along with many other goals and great memories, these two main goals were achieved.'

Federer joined forces with Annacone, the former coach of 14-time major singles winner Pete Sampras, in summer 2010, and has since won 13 titles.

However, the 17-time grand slam singles champion has claimed only one trophy this season and felt the time was right for himself and Annacone to go their separate ways.

'After numerous conversations culminating at the end of our most recent training block, we felt like this was the best time and path for both of us,' Federer added.

'Paul remains a dear friend, and we both look forward to continuing our friendship. I want to thank Paul for his help and the value he has added to me and my team.'

It's. About. Time.

Been calling for this for a while.

Maybe Andre Agassi could give him a little motivation with some training sessions. They seem like they get along pretty well. As far as a coach, I think Roche could be a real asset. Good call big_ted. Yet, would he be up for the travel and the grind of the tour? That would be interesting. Connors? Gilbert? Roddick?

Yeah, that would be wild. I don't think there's any way that would happen. He might hit with him once in a while and talk, but he may not be coaching for a while. Perhaps down the road. Maybe no coach would be the way to go for him at this stage. Personally, I think someone like Roche or Peter Lundgren would be good choices if he went the coaching route.

I know I'll sound crazy & Pete would never travel that much w/Roger on a regular basis - but maybe next year at the US.Open we could see a certain Mr.Pete Sampras in rogers box.

I'd love to see Pete's input into Roger's current game - as a coach or no coach.

Can't say I'm sad. For all the talk by commentators on how they "see" the influence of Annacone, all I saw was 1 Grand Slam title in 3+ years.

2012 was probably Federer's best year in that 3+ years, it's 1/3 not too bad. 2011 Federer screwed up and missed multiple grandslams.

not to mention how, ironically, he started turning into a grinder and lost a lot of his power and weapons with Annacone and how his net game got worse
