Here are just some pictures I found of Federer in his earlier career. He tried a bunch of things, you can tell. He even used tourna in the past.

wilson pro staff 6.0 85- http://editorial.gettyimages.com/source/search/details_pop.aspx?iid=1522277&cdi=0

don't know what racket- http://editorial.gettyimages.com/source/search/details_pop.aspx?iid=414866&cdi=0

What grip is this(not as in overgrip, but how he holds it)- http://editorial.gettyimages.com/source/search/details_pop.aspx?iid=1521262&cdi=0

The above pictures are of Federer when he is 18 by the way.

I thought I would just throw this one in cuase it is cool. This is when he is 16 years old hitting a backhand- http://editorial.gettyimages.com/source/search/details_pop.aspx?iid=2141415&cdi=0

and i think the racquet in the second pic is a wilson prostaff 6.1- its cgot the same colors, but on his racquet, the colors are on the inside of the throat, but if you go to TW and check it out, the color is on the outside of the throat, so its probably not it.

I know, that looked western to me too. Then again, even I switch to western on occasion for one ball, if the situation calls for it, for that extra bit of jump on the ball. Maybe he just want to make it really extreme topspin.

the racket in the 2nd photo is still the pro staff original 85. it looks like roger just had a sticker inside the v throat. sticker for stringing instructions i assume.

Not even close to western... his index knuckle is on the opposite side of the racket in the image... In between semi-western and eastern, index knuckle is still on the eastern bevel so you can call it a "strong eastern" FH grip.

That is absolutely not an eastern forehand grip. It is close to a western. It is not even close to an eastern.

its def a western whoever said it was an eastern is very wrong

You guys aren't picturing where his index knuckle is, you are assuming based on his index finger joint..... his knucle is on the opposite side behind. I've looked at enough slow motion Federer forehands. Its a strong eastern / weak semi-western grip. Case closed. Whatever works

Why are you guys so obsessed with Roger's equipment? Unless, you can hit the ball as well as Roger....does is really matter that much? The racquet he plays with now (Wilson Tour 90) is recommended for only 5.0 - 7.0 players. The head is smaller than most racquets. All the racquets he has played with come from the Prostaff family from the mid to late 80's. Does anyone know much Wilson pays Roger for endorsing their racquets? I think endorsement money has a lot to do with the racquets pros use...wouldn't you agree?

not if you want alot of TS lol

You want topspin? Rotate / pronate your forearm. Hitting topsin with eastern is just like hitting slice.... except your are curving the racket face OVER the ball.
