I think David Wheaton and Brad Gilbert came pretty close one year.

Yannick Noah and Henri Leconte looked ready to jump the net and go after their opponents one year as well. Not sure about anyone coming to physical blows on court. Pat Cash relates a story about having Ivan Lendl by the throat in a locker room in Monte Carlo, threatening to punch his head in after Lendl ruined a pair of Cash's shoes.

Anyone else?

Yannick/Leconte were mad at Flach/Seguso, but Yannick was much closer to actually fighting with Amos Mansdorf at the open one year.

Mcenroe wanted to fight Scott Davis in the locker room once....gee, what a suprise with those 2! ;-)

Oh, I'm sure there's fights at the recreational level...once we had to physically seperate an old german pusher in his 60's and a local pusher in his late 40's! lol...it was nice...the match was the most painful pushfest I'd ever had to watch....

McEnroe and Connors yelled at each other on more than a few changeovers in McEnroe's first few years on the tour. Ego and arrogance never give any room to equal ego and arrogance. I think Connors felt threatened that McEnroe was invading 'his' territory - another American lefty with a temper...

Was that Noah/Leconte vs. Flack/Seguso incident the one where there was a dispute over whether the ball touched Flach's hair?

Man - time flies...

Yes, Noah/Leconte thought it touched Flach, but it wasn't called. Noah/Leconte thought Flach should admit it touched him and give up the point, Flach said he didn't think it touched him and said if it touched anything it was his hair only. Even Seguso asked him if it did and he said he hadn't felt it. He also maintained it was the umpires call anyway....as I recall Noah/Leconte then completely tanked the last set in protest....

On the subject of Mac/Connors/fighting. Mac related a story where he cut into a heckler who had been working on him the whole match and then the heckler stood up and was a huge monster. He then started walking to court side...Mac said he couldn't back down of course...but he was thinking he was about to get beaten up in front of a full house! Then Connors jumped the net and ran over which confused Mac, but then Connors said something like, "I'm here to help you, but this guy is so big he could beat both of us up!" So Connors pretended to "hold" Mac back and allowed him to save face. It was one of Mcenroe's fond memories of Connors post career.

I'm not saying that this is true but according to a friend of mine he took a tour of the courts at Kooyong (Melbourne where the Australian Open used to be played). Part of the tour of the stadium included a tour of the locker rooms. One of the lockers had a dint in it that pretty well matched the shape of someone's head. According to the tour guide, who used to be one of the locker room attendants John McEnroe had just played Steve Denton (think that is his name. He was a Texan player from the seventies who actually won the Australian Open at some stage). Evidently the story goes that Steve was handing out John one hell of a thrashing and John threw one of his tantrums and stalled the match for about five minutes and Steve lost his concentration and lost the match. When they got into the locker room a few more words were exchanged and then Steve lost it and grabbed John round the head and rammed him into the locker and knocked him out. Now whether this is true or not I cannot say but it sounds good to me.

Well there was rumors that Anna Kournikova and Martina Hingis back in 2000 had a tour of exhibition matches. Well after the two finish one of their match, the two apparently had some sort of a cat fight. It was RUMORED that vases and flowers where threw across the locker room.

Damn Woodie

That story's ringing some very faint bells at the back of my head. I don't remember a great deal about Denton except his monster lefty serve and his racquet twirling - but that story seems familar now that you mention it. I'll try and get a friend of mine to find out some more - they're a Kooyong member of good standing.

Big Ted - the Lendl story comes from Cash's autobiography. Take it for what it's worth! He's said it publicly here in Oz a few times though.

And back when the Noah/Leconte - Flach/Seguso incident happened, Flach was sporting such an impressive mullet it's quite possible that the ball could have touched his hair without him knowing about it.

Denton did have a huge serve, reputed to be one of the fastest of all time....but I don't think he won the Aussie Open, Woodie...did make it to the finals at least....funny story though....maybe somebody should sell casts of Mac's head imprint on **** ;-)

Yes, Flach did have a mullet worthy of the late 80's! And he had it before young Andre appeared on the scene! No frosty highlights or spandex though...;-)

Thanks for sharing but somehow, all I can think of is some guy in California in his underwear sitting in front of a laptop. Not a pretty sight.

Someone suggested TW should start a thread called 'Tennis horndogs for adoption'. Any takers for Miles? He has a sweet side and will wipe off an entire USTA 4.0 team. Don't expect him to beat the crap off a 5.5 player anytime soon though ;)

Datacipher,
I remember that Noah-Mansdorf incident at the '89 US Open. After a close 5 setter, when they came to shake hands, Yannick said to Amos, "why did say f--- you to my family, this is not cool"
Amos said "i didn't say f--- you" All this came in loud and clear over the CBS mics. When they were leaving the court Pat Summerall said, "I guess they won't be having dinner together tonight
Later in the show Tim Ryan apollogized to any viewers who may have been offended by the language.

On Hingis/Kournikova.... I'm sure it wasn't such a bad fight... Probably was just misunderstood and something that started with those wonderful women's doubles battlecry:

"PILLOW FIGHT!!!"

This wasn't a fight, but was more lighthearted: Remember when Muster ran after an angled drop shot and could not get it and then ran around the net and chased Henman out of the stadium. I think Henman thought Muster was serious for a few seconds! Pretty funny stuff.

Rumor has it that Anna saw this pic of Martina flirting with Roger Federer and flew into a jealous rage. :p

I've seen yelling at my partner while he was sweeping the courts after a win. he's a superpusher. :D

rackets thrown in tandem under the net towards us while walking up to shake hands.

Threats to knife me in the carpark after an unintentional peg.

Macho grandstanding and chest bumps.

All fairly normal for tennis.

anyone know of any other tennis "fights"? I bumped this as it's apt.

Coria and Gaudio had a backstage bust up so I heard.

Stephan Koubek, excellent journeyman player pushed over the edge by psycho Koellerer.

Lord knows what ''crazy Dani'' said to get him that angry but the guy was insane master troll that made everyone want to strangle him.

Most tennis folks act with restraint, civility, and generally exhibit good self-control.

Good ones above, especially Yannick and mansdorf, et al.

- Nastase and hans jorgen pohmann of germany at forest hills, circa 1976. It was nasty. Almost came to blows inside after the match, which nasty somehow did win.

- I remember one actual fight in college. Right after the match ended. I will not mention names. But there was blood... in a college fieldhaus.

- I once saw a real altercation on a Public court in the city....a "transitional" neighborhood. A teen was roughed up by two grown men. I saw it happen from a distance and went in to see if the kid was ok. It was only a fleshwound. The argument was about court time. Crazy. Never saw those adult males again. The kid, a ranked player, went to college at the end of that summer. Incidentally no race or gender politics were at play. But maybe steroids were. Or gambling?

The conflict was actually on the court. Forgot exactly what happened to start it but Scott Davis wanted to throw down in the middle of the court (this was dubs). Davis is bigger than Mac and was really pissed (Mac was running his mouth, surprise) and Mac backed down. I seriously doubt Mac wanted to continue in the locker room cause he would have been tuned up.

I remember seeing this on tv.

i hate to do a ttwarrior post but i had d a guy run across the net and shove me during a round robin to get disqualified in front of his wife and newborn kid. played a tournament in norther nj, this club called the knoll in montville. guy was early 30's. slightly overweight. great shotmaker. i was a skinny junkballing pace changing nothing of a tennis player. anytime i hit a good driving shot he could pretty much redirect it into corners. the first set he smoked me 6-1. second set i proceeded a lot of drop shot and lobbing and he wore down and lost 7-5. third set he's up 2-0 and a whole game of constant drop and lob where he's gassed and wasn't putting away overheads. he misses and smash and yells you hit like a pu$$y. eventually i get a smash and hit him square in the collarbone with an ill placed smash. he runs around and starts shoving me and gets disqualified.

I’m curious about how a ball could touch Flach’s hair alone without touching his head, no matter how spongy the ‘80’s hairstyles could have been, and ruling out Flach having an Afro.

Lol...spongy eighties hairstyles!

Btw, @comeback.....thanks for posting that Borg/Nastase/Ashe/Laver clip from the seventies! The ball sounded so good on those old natural gut strings. Loved the sound of their feet sliding on the hartru.
How about the respect nasty had for Laver when Laver retributively erased a mark?

Definitely look up an image from that era of Ken Flach.

The ball grazed the waterfall section of his glorious mullet, just between his ear and his shoulder.
If the mullet did not exist, the ball would have sailed through without contact with flach.

Steve Denton was a right hander who made the Ausssie Open final twice.

Not a fight but when was the last time you saw Laver spitefully rub out a mark ..and Borg hitting a ball into the stands out of anger!!!

Actually that is really weird. Nastase rubbed out a mark and let Ashe replay the point but Laver rubbed out the mark but didn't allow a replay. That was a low act.

Thanks slice, I like how Laver quietly did it and moved on quickly....Even if it was a little unsportsmanlike, it was probably fair due to Nastase's countless gamemanship incidents over the years ..
Also i was at that Nastase-Poulman match in a packed stadium and Nastase kept calling him a Natsi and giving him the finger..The fans were absolutely going wild rooting against Nastase...I also saw Panatta give Scanlon the finger after Scanlon a rookie pro was beating the Italian/French Open Champ.
And BJK arguing with Gladys Heldman because BJK was sick and was taking extra time on changeovers..BJK eventually quit the match...These matches were on hartru at the USOpen...I saw a lot of cool stuff in my 40 years of going there..

Nice history at Forest Hills. Wow, you saw some great stuff.
I too, was at the infamous nastase-pohmann match. I sat by the portal just above the brown and yellow striped awning. Remember Mr. peanut and the funny little paper visors he gave to kids?
This was the day i learned what a "Not See" is. Then when i watched hogan's heroes, i really had the lay of the land.

Wow, I do remember the Mr Peanut visors..Where did you live? I lived near Giants Stadium in NJ..I used to drive to Forest Hills and park up on the BLVD by the apartments then walk to the club..Do you remember the crowd at the Nastase Poulman match as i remember it?

Yes. Cool place to grow up....rutherford, right?

Man....That was a crazy match. Intense crowd. I could hear ilie yell. I was in elementary school...just a little kid, so I don't remember it all clearly. But i could definitely sense the fight, and hear the word NotSee.

We lived in Manhattan, on the west side, noot far from the park. Then moved up to the suburbs when i grew older. But i had a tennis friend who lived in forest hills, and a cousin in middle village, queens. Played on grass for the first time at WSTC with a different friend whose family had a membership there....they lived right there on jewel avenue. We got to see the us open all the time, even More when they moved it to flushing.
