Full Bed Hyper G vs FireWire Boost

Well, there is no shortage of threads on these strings but I didn’t find any that compared the two. Sorry to add one more to the history but any feedback will be helpful

I played competitively in the 90s when I was a late teenager. Fast forward today and I’ve gotten back into playing seriously again this summer. The all Poly or Poly hybrid set ups are new to me but I’m really enjoying them. I’m also hoping to find the ideal set up and stick with it rather than change out to new strings every time I need my racquets strung.

My main interests in how these strings compare is:
1. Comfort (I’m looking for an arm friendly Poly)
2. Control (I prioritize this over power)
3. Tension maintenance

I get the feeling either will have more than enough spin and plenty of power.

My current racquet is the Head Speed MP 360+ which is a 16x19 pattern.

I’ve got the Firewire Boost 16g in my racquets right now and only ~3 hours of play. I’m really liking it so far. I had them strung at 50lbs which felt too tight, but over the 3 hours as they’ve lost tension, I can tell I will really like this string.

But if a full bed of Hyper G will be more arm friendly, I might lean towards that long term. No issues with the FireWire Boost thus far but I did get a lot of shoulder/elbow/wrist soreness from the Head Sonic Pro 16g (50lbs) that a shop recommended I try as my first all Poly set up.

Firewire Boost is pretty arm-friendly itself. I have Boost 18ga in my main racquet and 18ga Hyper-g in the other (both are Head Microgel Radical MPs 18x20) and I feel like Boost is softer feeling. I was hitting with a full bed of Ghost Wire 19ga, which is the cross string in the Boost setup. Ghost Wire on its own was extremely arm-friendly in comparison to boost and hyper-g.

HGS 1.25mm / Ghostwire 1.22mm is a bit softer than FW/GW same gauge.

look for the HGS playtest thread.

I can hit with either of those two setups, or VCT 1.30mm with no discernible difference in my performance, but my elbow doesn't like a full bed of HG. HG/GW is barely tolerable on my elbow 3 days a week.

Thank you. Going to FWB 17g was also one of the thoughts I had, so this is really helpful.

Hyper G is stiff 16l and fatter. Hyper G 17 gives me issues in some rackets, but Hyper g 18 is probably my top all around string if you don't break it. Soft, has pop, very high spin, good tension maintenance, control, etc.

thanks. Are you using a 18x20 or similarly tighter pattern. Or 16x19?

I was using the 18 in an 18x20. I've used 17 in 16x19. Both great. Tried 16l HG for the first time recently in a 16x19 for durability and it was significantly stiffer.

Hyper G soft isn't bad either. I've heard it's much softer than the standard in 16 gauges.

Boost will be softer. Both play great. FB HG or FB FW will offer more control than using slick crosses. You could also try HG/GW. I haven't tried HGS yet.

I agree with this. HGS 16L/GW 17 has been my favorite combo lately. I had a bad case of GE and can now play with this setup with no pain. FWIW I switched to the Clash 98
