Sorry I didn't see this match thread. Thiem not really sharp in any part of his game today. Last July won 2 events and number 1 seed in another with SF loss to Kholy the Kihtzy champ. This year 1 clay match in July and done. Melzter served around 75% in this match and Thiem 50%. The Thiem super kicker first serve looked like a slow 2nd serve today. Heading to Rogers Cup with a really flat game. Ugh.Melzer was more consistent, Thiem had flashes of brilliance, yet consistent play was not there, the telling factor was return of serve, Thiem floated too many long, plus not keeping the rally ball deep.

I think he needs the play time. I'm not confident about Toronto whatsoever at this point.Probably a blessing in disguise, though. At this point, another title in Kitzbuhel would matter little and would mean showing up to Toronto tired and unprepared for hard courts. With the depleted field in Toronto, he has a good shot at a MS semi on hard courts, perhaps even a final. Of course, if he draws Djokovic in the quarter-finals, he'll likely lose 6-2 6-3, but there's only a 25% chance that he'll draw Djokovic in the quarters. All in all, better to get over to North America asap. Plus, think about the long-term implications: the sooner he stops playing Kitzbuhel each year, the better. Given that he's Austrian, he's going to feel some obligation to play. If he were reigning champion, he'd feel all the more obligation. Perhaps now he'll refuse to play in 2017 and that will be a good thing for him.
