Getting the Abs Back..

Ok, so basically the problem is that I used to be able to see my top abs but never my lower abs for some reason. I did Ab ripper x from p90x but it didn't give me the best results. Now after I have gained my weight from 127 to 143 it seems that I have been gaining a bit too much fat. I've stopped working out because I cannot find a good workout program that will help me get the best results for tennis. Bottom line is that I want my top abs back and if possible my lower abs if I can and get some more muscle mass going. BTW, I'm not fat, I'm pretty slim actually and have worked out intensely because of p90x and now that I am done with it, I haven't done much. So please help me!!!

well the p90 and p90x programs are great if you can handle them. though you said you did the ab ripper portion did you do the whole program??

building the strong abs via ab workouts is great and all but to have them show you have have to burn a lot of calories via cardio.

I did the whole program and got into pretty good shape but the abs didn't totally define. Do you think this is an essential point of a tennis player? To have a six pack?

The core is responsible for producing power, so yes, its definitely good for tennis.

A six pack is nice to have, but you should be focusing on making your abs STRONG, not just pretty.

Lose fat and your abs pop out.
At 138, I can look like BruceLee. At my current 152, more like butterball.

the ab wheel ; I used this for years it will give your abs the "ripped, buffed & diesel" look & you will extremely strong in that area. be warned start out slowly with this "little wheel' do to much the first day and you will have a hard time mving around the next morning.

BTW, I'm looking for a program that I could use like a video to help me. If not, then could someone just post a workout out with reps and sets on here please?

Ab Wheel can be rough on the back, so be careful.

If you want to see ab definition, you have to burn fat, that's the bottom line. Look at smacked out heroin addict rock stars like Iggy Pop..you can see their abs!! Because they don't eat food!!

i got the ab slide which helps a bit for beginners. it's hard on the back if you dont' do it correctly, but you'll definitely feel the burn.

also to the OP, you might be in the unfortunate situation where your abs just won't fully show. i think this is a genetic thing so you can't help it. some people were never mean to have a six pack.

You can work out and do any program in the world, but if you want your abs to show, you have to burn the fat that is covering them. The best way to do that is to eat clean. You made no mention of your diet. Sure, you say you are slim, but that doesn't mean that you're eating well and healthy.

Your six pack is there...you just can't see it. Keep doing your ab workouts, but also work in some kind of cardio (doing intervals works, and is also good for tennis) in addition to eating *clean*. That means low fat, low (or no) processed crap, no junk food, no fast food...etc, I think you get the idea.

It could be that cleaning up your diet is all that you need to get the results you want.

I have one day at the gym for my core. Here's an example of one of my workouts.

I will start off with raised foot planks. Place your feet on a bench, elbows on the ground extended out so they are directly under your shoulders. Cheat toward your chest and you're cheating your core. Hold for 30-45 seconds, rest for 30 seconds, do 3 sets.

Now same set up only on your side, 30-45 second, rest for 30 seconds, do 3 sets each side.

Place hands on bench and slowly raise your knees toward your chest. Pull your stomach as if you're trying to lift your belly button toward your chin and hold it tight. I laughed when I first read about these but they will make you feel like a wuss if done correctly. 3 sets of 30 only rest 30 seconds.

Place feet on wall while laying on back. Throw a medicine ball against the wall as you lean forward, elbows to knees, catch ball as you are coming back down. 15 reps, 3 sets, rest only 30 seconds.

Now to the cables (or rubber bands if you don't mind getting snapped in the temple every once in a while) Position cable high. Pull using your core in a tree cutting motion. 20 reps each side, again, rest only 30 seconds.

Last thing I do is the ball planks. Hands out in front, feet up on a ball, roll ball toward your chest, and out straight.

End with a nice run on the treadmill to finish burning calories from the beer I drank the night before.

Easier said than done, but eat less junk and respect your elders.

yup - gaining that six pack is all about diet, and lowering your overall body fat %. generally speaking your waist is one of the first place that fat deposits and the last place and hardest to lose.

to sum it up... if you want better definition of your abs, then calories out > calories in

The best thing I've found are Roman chair situps. Do them with your shoulders turned to the left 5 or 10 reps then switch right 5 or 10 reps. Do about 40-60 going all the way back 'til your body is parallel with the ground then rest unless you can keep going! I'd try to get up to about 240 or more or at least 120, that's 60-120 on each side. If you are still not seeing your abs continue till you do. I'd say six months at the most and you should be ripped probably more like 2 or 3 months though since you said you are farely lean already! I've heard of bodybuilders that did this exercise as an aerobic exercise and did about 1,000 reps!!
