Anyone else been to the John Newcomb Tennis Ranch in Texas before? I’m going this weekend, looking forward to (hopefully) quality instruction.

It's pretty fun, looks like rain on Saturday was fortunately they have covered courts. If you want to go out to eat away from Newks I recommend the Huisache grill in New Braunfels.

What does winning the "Rock Steady" award entail? You must be a good player.
It means that out of the 40 players there, I was the best player. It’s a nice award and I’m extremely humble and grateful to be recognized. However the camp was filled mostly with 3.0-3.5 players. There were only a couple of 4.0’s there and even though I’m USTA 4.0, I’m closer to 4.5. I hit with the high level juniors and the instructors a few times while I was there. The head pro there said it wasn’t just about being the best player, he said I had excellent sportsmanship too. For example not hitting too aggressively at the lower skilled players. Again really enjoyed my trip and would definitely go again.

@TagUrIt How was your experience? I worked summer camp there a few years back. Best time of my life.

Who ran your sessions?

Hope you enjoyed becoming apart of the Team Family!

i remember they had some hot babes there, is this still the case ?
I’m married, but my eyes still work.lol There were a few hotties there, but we were all separated by our skill levels. All of the more attractive ladies were 3.0’s.

I did have a blast, the head pro was a guy named Adrian. Great coach, good teaching style and definitely knew his stuff. Even after he spent the entire day giving chalk talks and coaching, he took the time to hit with me for about 20 minutes. It was good hitting and nice to hit with the head pro. I’m glad to be a part of the Newks family and I’d definitely go back again.

Adrian did the camp that I went to about 4 years ago and he was great.

Been there a few times and my son lived there at the academy for a while. For me, and for him, we both had an excellent experience overall. Tennis was good, instruction was excellent, facility was dated but good, food was really good, and the area around there was beautiful with the old town shops and such. Nothing but good things to say from me. And compared to other facilities, it is a value price wise.

I will say, it will also depend on who else is there in your group for play and lessons. I was luck to have good groups both times.

Adrian is awesome. I learnt so much from him. His passion for the game is unreal. Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully our paths will cross at the ranch one day. TFT

Do people really improve after these camps or is it just an excuse for socializing?

There should, ideally, be a batch for 3.0 and 3.5 players looking to improve and possibly move up to 3.5 or 4.0.

That is the profile of the typical attendee.

OP admits that he is a 4.5 but yet he joins a class full of lower level players and proceeds to beat up on them. A sandbagger. It defeats the entire purpose.

The lower level players paying huge fees to improve should have demanded that such sandbaggers be thrown out of their class.

I can understand going to Hawaii to make a vacation out of it, but Texas? I will just save the money and play more tennis here.

WTF is your problem? You hijack this thread with covid/political debates and now you’re accusing me of sandbagging? I have ZERO control over the skill levels of the people who were in the camp with me. I never said I was a 4.5 player, I said that I’m 4.0 that’s closer to 4.5. No matter the skill level, there’s always something any player can learn if they have a good attitude and the willingness to learn something new. As far as being thrown out of the class, I paid to be there just like everyone else. If you would have actually read my posts instead of passing judgment, you would have saw that I won the Rock Solid award not just because of my skill level, but my fairness and good sportsmanship. There’s no joy (at least for me) in beating lower skilled tennis players. I played down, when I faced lesser opponents. Also if you would have read my post, I hit with the juniors (who were far stronger than me) and the instructors/coaches there. I could careless about your opinion, but get your facts straight before you start flaming and trolling.

A properly operated camp would place lower level players in a separate batch. They are paying big bucks to improve.

That is the profile of the typical attendee.

A 3.0 player that wants to improve to 3.5.
A 3.5 player that wants to improve to 4.0.

Are you telling us that this camp did not inquire of your "closer to 4.5" level upon registration and place you in the skill appropriate batch?

Tell us what skills you improved upon by hitting with lower level players (not the high level juniors) but hitting with your lower level classmates. You would have been better off hitting with your peers.

I’m not engaging you, your posts have been antagonistic and far from genuine interest. I created this thread to share my experience with other members here or for those that might be interested in going. You want to know what I learned there? Let’s play a match and I can show you.

If you want to know more about the camp, how they determine skill levels and group players together book a stay there and see for yourself. Have nice day.

So you refuse to tell us anything of significance of how the camp is run, the registration process and what is actually taught there. No, you have not "shared yor experiences". Only that the food is great and that you have won a mug by hitting against much lower level players.

Congratulations.

On the other hand, there are extensive reviews elsewhere on the board.

Newks seems to be the budget offering, whereas Saddlebrook seems designed for those with money and a serious orientation for tennis.

The red flag is not properly separating players according to level, if the OP is to be believed.
Claims that he was put in a batch with 3.0 and 3.5 players even though he is far above their level.

Do you expect them to create a group of 1 for a 4.0 player with 4.5ish tendencies? They will lump him with the others and it is up to him to play nice and accommodate the others.

One trick is to make him play singles with the next best player who might like the challenge. Another is to pair him up with a weak doubles partner and provide a balanced game. Yet another one is to draw him out and make him serve and play points and use it as a teaching moment. A clever coach with a grasp of psychology can put everyone at ease.

SoCal San Poobiego snob! The Texas hill country around New Braunfels has gorgeous scenery and lots to do. I suggest a tube ride down the Guadalupe River in a 16-wheeler tube to accommodate you comfortably.

I can't speak to if anyone else improved their tennis. Only that I did benefit from the feedback of the coaches there. They offered tips and advice to everyone, not sure if it translated into progress or success in their tennis.

If wanted to go to Hawaii, then I would have went to Hawaii. lol I can play tennis everyday where I'm located if I wanted to. There is quality instruction right at my own gym/club. I went for the experience and to see first hand what Newks had to offer. Sure if might not be ideal for some, but it was my choice and again I'm glad I went.

Exactly. I loved the area personally. The river walk and down town was so much for and beautiful. It was humid, but not awful.

Never been to Saddlebrook, which from what I have seen is a more resort style accomodations and facility, but I disagree with implying Newks isn't serious tennis. It most certainly is the only focus there. I think seeing more "lower" rec tennis attendees is solely based on price and also because they have huge summer programs for kids where the parents tag along. When I was there in the first session I was at, at the time I was a mediocre 4.0 and I was the lowest level player in the group of 6 I was with. The second time it was a larger group with mostly 3.5, but also a good number of 4.0. I took the opportunity to get courts and hit with some of the academy kids living there, but not sure everyone can do that. That was some of the best level play. I didn't do any one-on-one sessions though.

level doesn't matter when you are partying with Newk at night. They all get together at night and party and drink and sing. and whatever happens happens after.

Newk make a personal appearance, hang around any? Sounds like a great experience.
No he didn’t, but yeah despite that it rained the first two days, it was still a good time.

I did the same, I got there early and hit around with a few of the academy kids too. They are technical and can hit with pace. One young lady was ripping winners with a one handed backhand.
