Greatest British women tennis player of open era?

Who do you consider the greatest British women player of the Open era, Virgina Wade or Ann Jones? Considering pre-open player eras like Kitty Godfree or Dorothy Douglas Chambers vs them I thought would be kind of hard so between these 2 who do you believe was the greater player?

Ann Jones won 2 French Opens, and a Wimbledon title. She was mainly regarded as a clay courter, but was excellent on grass(there were not really significant hard court events then). She won her Wimbledon title by beating Margaret Court in the semis(Court won the other 3 slams that year) and Billie Jean King in the final(King was 3 time defending Champion). She reached 1 other final of Wimbledon, and 6 other semis. She lost in 2 U.S Open finals, and 3 other semis. At the French Open she was Champion 5 years apart-1961 and 1966, a losing finalist 3 other years, and a losing semifinalist another 3 years.

Virgina Wade is most famous for her Wimbledon win in 1977 won on the Centenary and at the time of the Silver Jubilee, upseting long time nemisis Chris Evert in the semis, then beating sparatic power Dutch hitter Betty Stove in the final. She was in a very difficult era and and was always in the shadow of the greats like Evert, Navratilova, Court, King, Goolagong, while also being challenged by players like Casals, Morozova, Melville, Stove, Barker. In additon to her Wimbledon title she won the 1968 inaugural "truly Open" U.S Open beating Billie Jean King in the final. She also won the 1972 Australian Open beating Evonne Goolagong in the final. She lost in 2 other Wimbledon semis, 1 other U.S Open semi.

Both have 3 Grand Slam titles, Wade at 3 different slam events, although all on grass then. Jones 2 French Opens on clay and a Wimbledon title on grass.
Jones reached many more finals or semis of slams, but Wade faced an even deeper pool of top notch Champions. So who was greater?

I give it to Jones just, because she won far more singles titles, and most importantly because she was far better on clay than Wade and far better on grass than Wade was on clay. I think Wade was more talented but Jones made more of her potential and ultimately won more.

Jones is clearly better. Not even a question really. If 3 of the 4 slams were on clay instead of grass, to give Jones an equal advantage to what Wade has, Jones would have atleast 8 slams while Wade would have 0 or 1. So that being said the fact with 3 of the 4 slams being on grass Jones is still tied with Wade and her Wimbledon win on her worst surface is probably even more impressive than Wade's on her best surface (Jones beat Court and King back to back, which was the only of the 8 slams in 69 and 70 Court didn't win, and King was 3 time defending Champion; while Wade beat Evert, but nobody else even slightly noteworthy that year) says it all.

Jones was probably a better player, and more consistent, You can see in warm ups that Wade had impeccable technique, but it often fell apart in matches.

Jones has a 81.5% career singles record with 136 titles and reached #2 singles ranking in 1967. Wade has 70.7 % with 55 titles and reached # 2 in 1975. If you look at women's doubles , they show similarities. Jones has 3 women's doubles titles all at RG, plus 2 other finals, and 2 mixed and three other finals . Wade has 3 titles plus two finals in Doubles but her results in mixed are a level below never having one one.

Jones is simply better despite having a shorter career but for some reason she flew under my radar all these years.

Wow did not realize some of the differences, particularly in win percentage were that huge. It really isn't even close, and is a more substantial difference than I ever realized. Most people today wouldn't know much other than both have 3 singles slams, both won Wimbledon, and Wade is more famous and won both Wimbledon and the US Open, and might wrongly conclude Wade was better. Jones was hands down superior, and your statistics make it even more clear than I already was on that.

Jones was far more modest and shier than Wade which may at least partly account for keeping a lower profile.

True. Even their commentary style (although both are excellent commentators, far superior to Navratilova, Evert, and more famous ex players who suck in the booth) show this difference as Wade is more extroverted and entertaining while Jones is very analytical and precise.

I've picked Wade purely because she's Virginia Wade and was all my childhood summers.
Probably one of the academically brightest to swing a racquet in anger.
Jones put more back in to the game at a grass roots level.
Wade lives in New York and London: Jones in the Midlands, UK.
This probably sums up how different they are.
Both a class act.

I don't think Wade drinks but I always imagine a gin and tonic clinking in the background.
She was commenting on a British girl at Wimbledon:
Male commentator: X has an interesting backhand.
Wade: probably best to talk about her forehand . .

Wade herself said she never was very good at Mixed, and she just didn't understand why.

I knew Ann Jones was underrated, but had zero clue she won THAT MANY titles. I know many of them were on the ILTF circuit, and thus didn't get a lot of press outside of the British Isles. But man her record is just outstanding

Actually, reading the OP again I realised that for the Open Era, as stated, it can only be Wade.
