Grips: MOST are absolute crap. I can't play with anything else than Tournagrip

I have tried them all. Well, not really, but a lot. I sweat a LOT, live in a very humid city and it has caused problems in my game in the past, I even lost my forehand for a couple of months due to moist, old overgrips. I played quite some time with Tournagrip blue, and its okay when new, but for me, it doesnt really last. Once it starts falling appart, its gone. Then I switched to Wilson pro overgrip white, which I thought had no competition at all, I used it for a long time, even though I did change it regularly, toweled the handle and hands every changeover, etc. I bought the 30 packs for a number of years. In between, I tried the Yonex Super Grap, which, to me is very similar to the Wilson, but I still give the edge to Wilson.

Then I bought a 3-pack of Tourna Mega Tac White...... it IS the tackiest of them all, you feel it quite secure in your hand, it sticks, you can grip loosely and freely, withouth the handle twisting. What a feeling to be able to swing like this!!!

I ran out of them last week, so, while Im waiting for my 30-pack, I had to buy one Wilson Pro from a proshop and theres no comparison. Wilson is nowhere as tacky, and doesnt last as long at all. I had a tournament on Sunday, then again on Tuesday, and just on the 2nd day I had to change it. They had some Dunlop Gecko overgrips at their proshop, so I had to buy one. The same, kinda sticky, but not really, felt really uncomfortable after a while (it was a very humid day), felt I had to grip tighter and my game suffered. I went to play with a friend yesterday and the same, it just didnt feel secure, and felt it twisting when I missed the center of the stringbed.

I had a 2nd racquet with a much older, dirtier Tourna Megatac, so I picked it up, you know, to have a feel. Immediately I noticed how much more stickier it was, even when it was worn out, much more than the almost new Dunlop. It is worlds of difference, and I decided to play with the old Tourna stick instead. Bye bye, forever, Dunlop Gecko, thanks but no thanks. Oh, and you too, Wilson pro, you're ok, you're just no Tourna Megatac, not even close.

For those of you who like tacky OG's, I dare you to find a better option out there than Tourna Mega Tac. And I always go for the white, read on some thread that the white doesnt have any dyes, thus its the better of them, so thats all I use (might not be true, but I'm sure psychologically I'd notice a difference).

Cheers!

thx, just bought a 30 pack based on your recommendation.
went through a similar evolution...
started with tourna blue
-went to wilson pro (have like 30 left)... currently think this is the best OG ever...
looking forward to seeing how megatac works out.

[edit] this stuff is awesome. only negative (not really), is that i like to spin my racquet while waiting for return of serve... but it's so tacky, while spinning, it "caught" when i didn't want it to, and i ended up dropping the racquet and losing the point :p this is my new grip from now on. stays tacky when dirty too!

You'll LOVE IT, IF you like a tacky feel. I dont know if its for everyone. I feel much more confident with it. The other three I mentioned are nowhere near the same league, IMO.

Lemme know! (if you dont like them, you can always send them to me!)

I tried them and thought them too sticky. My wife uses a size 0 grip and has problems with it twisting on off-center hits and she loves it. It made a big difference for her.

My preferred is the Volkl Super Perf, but it is only available in a 3 pack, so I seldom use it.

Tournagrips aren't what they used to be when I played in HS in the early 2000's. I tried some lately and they fray and fall apart within an hour. They used to last forever. I switched to Luxilon Elite Dry, similar fabric feel and absorbency but doesn't wear a hole nearly as quickly.

The prob with the Lux grips is they really don't work as well. Poor substitute. Tourna Grip does have a life span. You can't keep them in your bag all summer, pull them out, and expect them to be ok. When they are fresh, they are unbeatable. But the OP is talking MEGA TAC. Totally different animal and he's right. Tack that lasts FOREVS!!!

good to know. I used to use tourna blue back in the day when I was in my teens 10 years ago, then switched to wilson sensation grips and havent really used anything since. But my issue is my hands sweat like crazy and in the middle of points I lose grip of my racquet because their so sweaty.

I will look into picking some up and trying it out based on what you guys are saying

Huh. I just use a wrist band. Pretty sure it keeps the handle from getting wet. So the gamma grip supreme works just fine

The life span is about 1-2 hrs before a frayed hole appears. Lux doesn't wear holes, is equally absorbent and feels similar in texture

That will work for most people, but for some (me), it requires changing my wristband every 3-5 games during summer months...which, btw, is how I address the problem.

My level of sweat is unparalleled, and there is no grip, not even Tournagrip, that can keep up. Which is why, in addition to changing wristbands often, I’ll also change frames after each set...as well as shirt, socks, and sometimes, even shoes...

I've worn a wristbands for years now, AND a handtowel, to constantly dry hands and grips. Its a great help.

Anyways, I accidentaly had to try Tournagrip original blue again, I was gonna split a 30 pack Mega Tac with a friend, but he messed up and bought the original. Didn't like it. I see now it is the tackines I like. Tourna original is just fine, it DOES feel and stay dry, but rough, and I dont feel secure without tackiness.

I played a tournament on saturday and on sunday, and on both of my matches I preffered to play with the frame that still has an old Mega Tac white, instead of the much newer tournagrip original.

I see its just a matter of taste, some will preffer the dry, rough Tourna original, but if you like a tacky feel, I insist, I havent found anything like Mega Tac, Wilso pro doesnt come close.

(The other suggestions you guys have given me are on my To Do list)

Well, had to forcibly play with a Tournagrip blue original... Was gonna split a Megatac 30-pack with a friend, but the very idiot messed up and bought the Tourna original. So gave it a shot, of course, specially since I ran out of OG.

Conclusion: DONT like it. It is dry, I'll give them that, but that's about it. there's no grip on it, I just miss and NEED the tackiness. I know that Megatac are usually recommended for cold, dry weathers, but, I, living in a near tropical country, in a very humid city, love them. I just need a hand towel to constantly dry my grips and hands and it works out perfectly.

I even preferred my old, worn out, megatac, than a new tournagrip original.

I find the Tornagrip blue ok in summer but as it starts to get cooler it's too dry.
I've tried Wilson, Pros Pro and others.

Gonna try the Tourna Mega Tac White and see.. Thx

I got a pack of the Tourna Mega Tac for the Mrs. as she likes tackier grips. This thing is like fly paper! I'll test it out as well and post up my thoughts.

In HS I used gamma supreme, then swapped to super grap in college, dabbled in wilson pro but never like it as much a super grap. It might be too tacky for me but we'll see!

Way more grippier and miles better and firmer grip thant tourna Mega tac is Toalson Ultra Grip. I recommend you to try it. It is thinner than Tourna. Sometimes it can be too thin, but remember that you should always wrap tacky overgrips lightly. Do not stretch tacky overgrips or you lose most of the tackiness. This is specially true with wilson pro overgrips. You also get thinner grip if you stretch the grip while you wrap it.

If you sweat a lot you should use absorbing grip not tacky grip. Specially if you don't use fred perries. Classic tourna grip might be the choice that, though they are worn out start to degrade heavily after one set.

I've tried the tournagrip, Wilson, and Head over-wraps. Thought all were not good. I regularly play in 90+ heat and nothing is better for me than Head Tour pro grip without any added wrap. I sweat a lot and wear a wristband also.

Going to have to try these megatacs now. Like a tacky grip.

I’ll also change frames after each set...as well as shirt, socks, and sometimes, even shoes...

Please dont tell me your shorts get sweaty playing mixed doubles too? The mind boggles!

Played using the Tourna Mega Tac White.
I think it's going to be tacky enough for me.
We'll see dead of winter though.

I sweat a lot and found every overgrip to lose their grippiness and become slippery. I like the thicker grips for cushioning & sweat absorption. Tourna was nice but just doesn't have the durability. Wilson and Yonex grips were nice when my hands were not as sweaty, but as more sweat builds up they became very slippery. Same with Volkl, Gamma, Babolat and Head grips. When my hands were not as sweaty, they all performed fine, but once my palms got really wet, nothing really worked other than replacing them.

I was doing a search and came across a review mentioning the Tier One Sports Tacky Overgrip in white. Sounded like what I was looking for, so I ordered a thirty pack and have been very pleased with the results. One noticeable thing about the grip was that it felt wet but still maintained the tacky, grippy feel. I am not so sure about the durability, but it seems to last longer than Tourna. It is a bit on the thick side, too.

picked up 2x 3 packs of the megatac from the local ***** sporting goods last week and i'm beyond impressed. It's extremley grippy and tacky, my hands still sweat like crazy especially in our hot bubble, or when playing outside, but will definatley keep buying from now on.

About to change my first grip out prematurely after 1 week and about 12 hours of play time so far and itsnot even slipping, just shows how dirty my hands really are:eek:

OP and the rest of you have convinced me to go try these out, will update how it goes. Been a long time user of Yonex Supergrap and Wilson Pro so definitely in the same alley.

I'm still liking the Mega tac.
Never feels cold dry / slippery. I can relax me grip a bit and focus on staying loose and on the shot.

Thanks for the tip.

Another profuse sweater here... I usually use Yonex Super Grap, but maybe need to give Mega Tac a try next time.
What is the length like? I find that the Yonex Super Grap is just long enough for my grip, so anything shorter is going to be too short.

Extra long. You might even have to cut it. I dont, since I swing a 2hbh and sometimes my left hand finds itself way up on the handle, I like to wrap the og a couple of times up beyond the handle. So yeah def long enough.

Thanks, I've ordered some.

Once I try them out perhaps I will do a sweaty guy's review pitting Mega Tac vs Yonex Super Grap (my usual overgrip) vs Gamma Supreme (hitting partner uses them and likes them).

Heard great things about Mega Tac. Will definitely try given the raving reviews here. Is the black one pretty much the same as white?

First cold (like 40F) windy dry morning match with Mega tac.
To be fair it was not a brand new fresh grip.
It was still a lot better than the others I've tried.
I'll put a new one on next time.

I rock Yonex Supergrap in yellow all day, every day. I've tried other grips, but for me that one is the best. Even during brutal hot and humid Texas summers, I still use it. It's only bad in those conditions beyond about an hour to an hour 15 minutes, then I'll either need to towel the grip down or switch to my second racquet. It works well anyway, because I like to get equal use on the strings. So an hour with one racquet or one practice with one racquet and then I'll switch to my other racquet for the next practice. :D

I've been using the Tourna Mega Tac (the white one) and it is great! Much better performance than the blue version for me.

So you've tried the blue Mega Tac as well? Huh.... I guess speculations about colors and dyes are not that off then!

Just bought my 10 pack of white ones, had to go "elsewhere", since they were all out at TW...

Bought a 10 pack of Tourna Mega Tac based on the comments in this thread and played with the OG on for the first time earlier today....man, I think it may be a little too tacky. It honestly feels almost as sticky as the the sticky side of packaging tape. Haha. I am coming from Gamma Supreme and Gamma RZR Tac and I *think* I like the Supreme the most. I feel like it provides good tac while also having an almost velvet/alcantara feel that I like. It gets a little spongy when wet though...

Playing in the cold weather here the Torna mega tac is great.
It's the first grip that actually works well no matter how cold the conditions and my hands are.
Even when used for while.
I've found a light rub with soapy water cloth rejuvenates it too for some more use!
