Grosjean Retires

I wish I saw a few more of his matches. Incredibly fast and also had a fast trigger on his forehand.

I read elsewhere that he would retire only at the end of the season. He still wants to play Wimbledon this year.

Great player, very fun to watch. Made SFs of 3 of the 4 Slams, and made the year-end-championships one year. Such a great shot maker when he was at his best.

Too bad he let his lead over Clement on the AO semis slip away. I think a Grosjean-Agassi match would have been a lot more interesting.

Anyway, a good guy, who had a solid career, who was very entertaining.

Kudos.

That doesn't surprise me. He was having real trouble getting into any decent events. I saw him in Auckland in January. The tournament organizer only accepted Grosjean because Arnaud Clement offered himself as a "package deal" with Grosjean when they had two last minute pull-outs.
Awesome player, sad to see him go.

It was a horrible loss for Grosjean. I'm amazed it's not mentioned that often within tennis fandom when it comes to all-time chokes.

Another one of those "short guys" who could play big. Grosjean could move well, had an underrated serve, a consistent 2 HBH and tremendous variety with his forehand. He also hit great on the run, using the "reverse forehand" on a regular basis. Did he have injuries or was he just eclipsed by the current crop of bigger, stronger, younger French players like Monfils, Gasquet, Simon and Tsonga?

errr he;s at a retirement age irregardless of any injuries.

Class act, very tough player, just fell short of winning slams in a strong era. Always a gentleman and in his prime a very exciting flashy player with lightning speed.

This news is no surprise but I will miss Sébastien. :( But he had a great career and I hope he still gets some good results this year before retiring. :)

Always liked his game, he has smooth strokes and a nice all-court game. Wish him luck for whatever he does in the next phase of his life.

Yeah,not surprising given his age and injuries.Will be missed,had a real smooth game and quite a big serve given his height.Was great to watch at Wimbledon.

Most of the guys that were just starting out when I picked up tennis are beginning to or have already retired:
Grosjean/Rios//Guga/Kafelnikov etc. etc.

Next up.. Moya/Clement/etc. etc.

Late 90's was a great time for tennis IMO.....

Yeah, me too. I picked up tennis in 95'. I remember when Guga, Rios, Grosjean, Safin and many more made their splash. Now, they are all gone. Tennis is so short lived, however. You really have less than a decade in most instances to make a household name for yourself. On top of it all, the last 7 years has flown by faster than any stretch of time I can remember. Damn Bush years were horrible.

Always enjoyed watching him play. He should have made the AO final in 2001.

He was good on every surface, and will be missed.

There won't ever be another Chang, those times are over.

Grosjean reached 4 slam semifinals on 3 different surfaces, so yes I think he could've won a slam if he was taller, it doesn't mean he would've won one for sure but his chances would've been a lot better.

But there have been many players who have had the perfect height and even better games than Grosjean who haven't won a slam. I think that might've should be a 'nearly', which translates to......

If Grosjean was taller, he might have 'nearly' won a slam. So no he wouldn't have won a slam. No chance. He didn't have the correct firepower to win at the time when power was everything.

You know that how?

With a bigger serve and slightly more power on his groundstrokes (his forehand already was huge for his size) it's well possible that Grosjean would won a slam in the weak field of 2001.

Yes and with Safin's 2H BH, Federer would have won 20 slams already. Quit giving people extra enhanced attributes and then giving them slams.

Never gave him a slam. All I did in the first post in this thread was writing "if he was a few inches taller he might've won a slam".
