exactly. they *swing slower* (holding back) and controlled until a ball presents an acceptable risk/reward situation. Then they increase rhs; trading a bit of control for the reward of additional pace.

Duh... no. They don't slow down their swing. They hit flatter for more forcing shots. Please learn more about tennis.

Podcast from Ian Westermann (knowing 10x more tennis than even a random ttw poster) where he talks swing speeds in answer to subscriber submitted questions:

"..... Next up we've got 3.5 to 4.0 and this is where David falls into play, kind of an intermediate to upper intermediate level and this level of player can start to accelerate a little bit more. I wrote down, and again these general guidelines here, very general guidelines, I wrote down in my notes 80% max. So, you can start to accelerate a little more aggressively when it's appropriate in the point situation, but not more than about 80%, and again 100% meaning that that’s as hard as you can hit the ball.
.........
Then lastly 4.5 to 5.0 level and at this level, consistent acceleration is needed. It's not only something that you want to do, you really have to do it to be competitive and at this point you're taking 90% plus cuts at the ball when it's appropriate. That doesn't mean every single swing yeah you're starting to really take a full cut at the ball. At this level, especially once you get up to 5.0 and above, large chunks of points are now won instead of lost. It's not that a 3.5 or a 4.0 player can't ever hit a good shot and will never hit a winner, you will, but it's a matter of percentages. At a 4.5 and 5.0 level a lot more points are won through forcing errors and hitting winners than at lower levels. So, that means that it's more important to start to really accelerate to keep your opponent from really teeing off and pressuring you over and over and over again.

........."

This "swing full out on every ball for increased control" is ridiculous.

Ummm... nobody ever said to swing full out. I said to swing fast. And I specifically posted in this thread fast does not mean hard or max effort. Do you even play tennis?
And you notice your quote says to accelerate and not slow down for higher levels? You just proved my point trying to prove your faulty tennis knowledge. Lol. Ha ha. Thanks.

Your grasping and embarrassing yourself. Of course the goal is to swing fast. Virtually all but this cult following understand that players slow down their swing (from max possible) when extra control is desired. The higher the level of play the less you must slow it down.

And from the thread pro's blog on an atp top 10 player:
"And if you watch carefully, you'll see that even the big bangers on the pro tour don't crush the ball all the time. Murray has incredible variety. Focus on him alone, and see how often he hits a neutral shot, slowing down his swing, aiming high over the net, and looping the ball deep into his opponent's court. By slowing down this way, he keeps himself in the point, cuts down on unforced errors, and deprives his opponents of short or weak balls that they can pounce on. Murray will do this shot after shot, if he needs to. It isn't glamorous, but it's way smart. Brad Gilbert was great at this, too.

I think your changing your argument. My contention was you don't slow down swing speed to maintain control. Which I am correct.

Now if your argument is swimg speed is slower than maximum possible rhs than yes you are technically correct. Because virtually any swing will be less than maximum. so if your playing with words your technically correct.

But high level players do not slow down their swing. Anywhere. They speed it up. Read your own quote you religiously adhere to. you basically went from "I should swung slow to maintain control" to proving my point. You swing fast regardless.

From your hero Salzenstein:

"Hey everyone, Jeff Salzenstein here. Inside this video, we're going to talk about the concept of ball control today. I see a lot of players that are trying to hit the ball hard and just absolutely crush the ball, and they actually skip a very important step.

You want to learn ball control when you play tennis. What do I mean by that? Well that involves actually swinging slower. I hear all this mumbo-jumbo about racquet head speed, and yes — racquet head speed is very important when you're developing as a player and you want to move to the next level, you got to be able to rip the ball and swing fast. But before you get to that step, you want to really focus on being able to feel the ball on your strings, control the ball, be able to play with a relaxed hand and play with effortless power.

So when you go out in the court, I want you to consider focusing on actually swinging slower and smoother almost at a 50% pace, so you can feel the extension instead of trying to rip through the ball — because I just see a lot of players making a lot of mistakes when they do that, and I’m constantly coaching players to slow down, smooth it out, and hit with effortless power.

Let me know what you think about what I talked about and I’ll talk to you soon. Thanks."

Only problem is I don't need to swing at 50% speed to keep the ball in the court. I think he is referring to hacks like you. Maybe you can try 55%. If I swing at 50% it might be 20 minutes before I missed one. Extrapolate to a pro. If he hit at 50% he might literally not miss until he had a cramp. So yeah. Your wrong.

The answer is to get to be a big boy tennis player. You swing fast. All the time. When you personally can exceed 50% swing speed and hit 25 balls in a row we will get you a pair of big boy pants. Until then keep digging up quotes to justify your hackness. The rest of us will keep swinging our rackets fast.

So you gain control. Thanks. btw one hack to an obvious pro; how much have you made on the tour this year?

Did overhitting and subsequent lack of control keep you out of the top levels?

Congrats, I know you're a great player and local. Otherwise this "hack" would've challenged you long ago....
