How important is winning the U.S open to Henin's year?

How important do you think it is to Justine Henin's overall year to win the U.S Open? I think it is huge for her to win the U.S Open for an few reason:

1)She surely must be bothered that she has reached all 3 slam finals this year and only won 1. So if she does not win the U.S Open, regardless over whether she reaches the final or not she will end the year having lost more times in a slam final, then winning a slam. She needs to win the U.S Open to atleast be able to know she won as many times in a slam final as she lost. To work that hard to get in that position that often, when you are a multi-slam winner and champion like Henin is, and then lose at the last stage more often then not, would be very frusterating.

2)The way the points are looking she has a very good chance to end the year ranked #1, even if she does not win the U.S Open. Mauresmo would have to win the U.S Open and Henin lose in the semis or sooner for the two to even be about tied going into the fall indoor season. She would probably feel the year-end #1 ranking was hollow if she did it, with somebody having won more slams that year then she has.

3)A year with 2 slam titles and all 4 slam finals reached would be an amazing year, even moreso then one with 2 slams and no other finals. However one with 1 slam and 3 finals would seem a bit of a dissapointment. Also ending the year with 2 slam titles and all 4 slam finals, would set her apart as the tours dominant player even with Mauresmo winning also 2 slams, as Mauresmo will probably not reach the U.S Open final giving her only 2 finals for the year.

4)Alot of her reputation for being such a clutch player has probably faded in some eyes due to losing 2 slam finals to the same player no less, and a player that is somebody alot would have expected her to beat on any surface. To regain her reputation as a clutch player this is a big event for her.

She still achieved a great deal this year even if she doesn't win the US Open, consider she only played limited schedule so far this year. I think this will give her confidence that she doesn't need to play full schedule to get to slam final. IN the past, she felt she needed to play a lot of matches to do well at slams. If she builds her schedule around slam completely, she will have a long career as she stated she wanted to have.

She was very impressive today against SK.

I agree with you that doing so well in the slams despite playing a limited schedule will give her the confidence that she does not need the added assurance of playing extra events to feel ready for the biggest ones. It also probably gives her a sign that is a good idea for her to do in the future, as she has had health problems when she has overplayed, and being smaller she has to be careful of that. Hopefully this years success with a more careful schedule sets an example for her the rest of her career.

aussie final doesnt count...

if you look at any of the top athletes in any sports, they have an uncany ability to shrug-off their past and be optimistic for the future.

that's probably what the 6weeks of break is for... she has to be the no. 1 favorite to win the USO. i was also rooting for her to win the wimby

did anyone see those SICK backhand returns in the corner? she has the best backhand in WTA...

What happened to her in the Aussie Open final was sad but in the Wimbledon final she pretty much gagged. She cant blame anybody for that loss but herself. She should be dissapointed since she could have won all 3 majors so far this year. She does have to win this event to save her year in a way I believe. She will have a tough time doing it since Maria Sharapova is playing great right now, Amelie Mauresmo has confidence in slam finals and vs Justine herself now, and Ivanovic might shock everyone.
