How much do you pay for club tennis?

I dont play at any club right now but im thinking about joining this local club this winter. They are supposedly one of the top tennis clubs in the nation! The director is also the head director of the player developement for the state of michigan. one of the pros is the head coach of U of Michigan. the club juniors team won the division or w/e you call it EVERYYEAR since the creation of club team tennis. 4-1 pro/player ratio. so its obviously a great club.

and its 185$ per year membership, that really doesnt get you anything extra except you can use their outdoor courts (i dont need) and their weightroom (i prolly wont need). but it allows you to take lessons during the winter which still costs money.

so i wanna know how much you guys pay for club tennis and lessons and such, and any suggestions would be nice. should I go for this club or look around for other cheaper clubs? or is this not a very expensive fee to begin with?

I belong to one of the smaller clubs in Kansas City (based on number of courts). It costs about $45 a month. That's just the membership fee - it doesn't cover court costs, leagues, lessons, etc. However there is FREE court time in the summer months. From what I've been told, it's one of the cheapest clubs in town. Very nice facility though, and great pro's. I've been a member there about 10 years and enjoyed it a lot.

You are going to get replies with costs all over the map. Clubs can range from a 3 court facility to a 25 court facility in a wide variety of settings and with an assortment of amenities. The club I currently belong to has 10 courts of which 5 are lighted, pool, exercise room, sauna, whirlpool and racquetball courts. It is well maintained and costs about $90.00 a month for my wife and I. There are no additional fees to use any of the facilities. The only additional costs you incur are if you sign on to play USTA league tennis at $18.00 per season per team. The last club I was at has 7 courts of all have lights, pool, exercise room, sauna, and whirlpool. It cost about $115.00 a month for a couple membership.

a friend of mine in OR pays roughly the same for similar facilities.

Here's a sample from the lower end -

Courts: Two felt carpet indoor courts, two clay outdoor courts.
No other facilities (well, unless you count the showers :)

Membership fee: $30/year
Indoor court fees: $15/hour
Outdoor court fees: $10/hour or $50 for unlimited play.

If you participate in series play (representing the club) the club covers the court fees (for your home matches). Your team pays for the balls (two 4-ball cans per team match consisting of two singles and one doubles) and something to eat after each match.

Monthly club social tournaments (doubles mostly) costs about $15 per player.

Greenville, SC. Full Country Club but we have a tennis/swim/social membership. $90 per month with a $40 per month food minimum and we have 7 clay courts and 3 hard courts, all under lights. I consider it a good price for around here. Great pros and staff and nice members.

Hi DonnyZ-

I see you are in Michigan. I'm just on the other side of the lake from you. As us folks in the snow belt understand, the main issue is ability to book court time indoors for the fall through winter. There's a few cheaper clubs around my area, but I can't ever get court time when I want it during the winter. Many clubs operate like this, they set it up heavy on round robins, leagues and private lessons, then raffle off whatever is left over to permanent court time for members.

I pay a premium price for a club were there are plenty of courts, 8 clay, and 8 indoor, about $80 per month. There are cheaper alternatives, about $250 per year through the local Park Districts. As I said, getting court time can be impossible when there's snow on the ground with the Park District Clubs.

I got invited to play for my cousins old team. The only catch was membership to the club $90 a month. I didn't think it was worth it.

$185/year is cheap for membership.

Around here there are initiation fees that range from $100-$1,500. Monthly costs are anywhere from $55-200.

I actually have decided against joining a club because I can only play 3 days a week and public park leagues, ladders and USTA tournaments pretty much take up all that time.

So, lete me get this straight. The fee allows you the use of the outdoor courst AND the right to pay for lessons. Did you say pool or no pool? Doesn't sound so bad - because to me the social aspect of the club is really the most important. And I don't mean sitting around smoking cigars and talking about politics.... I mean the tennis energy - the compitition, the tournaments, etc. And it sounds like that is what you got in droves there. I say go for it. I only wish I had that option here.

You won't even "change" the sig for the typo?

I live in Central Cal. I have 15 lighted tennis courts, a pool, a jacuzzi, a gym, locker room for 75 bucks a month. There was a 200 dollar startup fee. This includes unlimited court usage year round. I didn't even know clubs charge for court time if you are a member.

$185 a year is pretty good. The San Francisco Tennis Club prices are exorbitant.

You got that right!! $185/year is dirt cheap and a bargain! Consider that that's how much one new racquet costs you.

I used to be a member of the SFTC, and I was paying $135 per MONTH (discounted individual membership), not including court fees. I'm sure the fees have gone up since then. Indoor court fees were like $36 per HOUR most of the time. And that's on top on an initiation fee of something like $1,500 - $2,000. Play tennis there just a couple of times per week and have some snacks in the snack bar, add in the monthly membership fee, and your bill can easily top over $500 a MONTH!!!! :( Hey, but you get to play tennis. Not too many many places to do that in the city of S.F. I'm so glad I moved! :D

$750 start up and $250/month family membership = unimited usage. Of course, throw in the kids getting smoothies/sandwiches, a tourney and a clinic and it up to $400/mo.

i live in indy and looked EVERYWHERE in the city at the clubs and they were crazy expensive. 380$ annual fee (not too bad i know) but to reserve court time it's lke 26$ an hour... may not sound like mcuh compared to some places but you've got to understand how cheap it is to live in indianapolis. it has one of the lowest cost of living rates in the country. that said, i live on the east side, and a little bit out of town there is a fitness club that has 2 courts only 10 minutes from my house. they get a lot of play in the winter when people can't play outside, but i can go later in the evening... plus it is a full gym with classes (which are no additional cost) and lockerooms, whirlpools, saunas etc etc etc for 35$ a month... if you want to resverve a court it's 8 bucks an hour, but if you walk on it's free.

and best of all they have a massive ball machine that they let use for 2.50$ an hour!

worth it.. totally worth it:)
