how much sugar should one eat in a day

How much sugar should a healthy person consume per day? Everything nowadays is loaded up with sugar and its hard to tell how much should be the healthy limit. Im only a teenager, but I dont want to end up getting diabetes or anything later on.

There is actually no need to directly eat any refined sugar (sugar found in candy, sweets and sodas) and you will be healthier if you don't. You should have a balance of Proteins, fats and carbs. Carbohydrates are actually broken down by your system and used as the source of fuel that you need. Preferably eat complex carbs such as those found in whole grains and vegetables. They take longer for you system to break down and therefore provide a steadier supply of energy (no quick highs and lows like you would get from pure sugar). They also provide other benifits such as vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Let's put it this way. I'm sure Lance Armstrong would NEVER drink a soda during the Tour.

You are correct in that most things today are loaded up with sugar. If you don't completely cut out refined sugars from your diet, at least become aware of labels and how much you are consuming. A soda and a candy bar a day will probably not hurt you, but a poor diet with little or no exersise will take its toll down the road.

however, it would help a lot more if you gave me a specific number to set as a goal - amount of grams of sugar i should eat per day

its really hard for me to not have any at all since even a slice of multigrain(or any other non-white) bread has 5g of sugar, and i like to eat a lot of bread lol, a cup of soy milk also has 7g grams of sugar, and a cup of milk 9g, protein/nutrition bars also have around 15g

so whats a realistic number, im thinking around maybe 30-50g?

Simple sugars are really carbohydrates and the recommended daily intake is 300 grams for a 2000 calorie diet. Remember milk and dairy products have milk sugar or lactate, fruit has fructose, and to control blood sugar and your triglyceride levels, personally, I refrain form any sucrose if possible. 2000 calories is not a lot of food and added sugars just keep you from eating more of what is really needed.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. In the morning, I brush with edible paste, blueberry flavor. Then, for breakfast, I load up on Cinnamon Toast Crunch. During the day, I eat lots of starbursts and chug down cans upon cans of Redbull. I seem normal, right? *seizure*

USTA magazine, this month, has an article on "Fueling the Fire". They recommend that 60 percent of your calories come from complex carbs, 25 to 30 percent fat and 10 to 15 percent protein. This of course, represents a "training" diet. It's all about the proper balance within your total caloric intake. Some people might eat 2000 calories a day. Others will eat 3500 a day. It depends on your training amounts and your metabolism etc.

They recommend that you can download nutrition and fluid replacement guidelines from www.highperformance.usta.com.

I was wondering too.
If say I eat loads of sweets and all, but I exercise a HELL LOT, would it do any harm to my body?

Loads of sweets are never good. It plays havoc on you blood sugar levels. When you eat sweets your blood sugar levels quickly rise (the high) which causes your body to compensate with insulin. Since the sugar rush is so fast, your body over compensates and brings you blood sugar down below normal (the low). Excersise itself has little to do with this high and low effect. It will however serve to burn off extra calories so that you don't gain fat from it. I'm not an expert so I don't know what the long term effects are, but it can't be good.

I understand the desire to have a number to work with. My own experience is this. About three years ago I pretty much completely stopped refined sugar, bread, pasta, rice and potatos. I eat as much fruit and vegetables and artificial sweeteners, especially Splenda, as I want. I lost some weight and have never been healthier. I tried a few times to get into the counting thing but it just never worked out.

diabetes flows in my veins. its just waiting for the right time to attack. just kidding. a lot of peopel in my family have diabetes hopefully i luck out.
