He's never been out of the game this long. What can we expect in his first tournament?

I expect either a Thiem Federer final or a Rublev final. If Thiem, it could go either way, and with Rublev I think Fed could bag it quickly.

No way of knowing until we see his form in his second round match. He has quite a challenging draw as well.
I fancy him to win it. Qatar is pretty fast and i think he will be up at the net alot and none of the players in the draw will deal with that type of tennis.
If he wins it whole narrative for the year changes. He can make a massive statement and the Legend i think will. I wonder what TV ratings will be. I have a feeling they will be massive.

Funny thing going around on Twitter with Fed / Dan evans

First match Fed played in 2017 was Dan Evans at Hopman cup and we know what happened
Possible first match Fed plays in 2021 against Dan Evans too

Thinking a 39 year old player will be rusty and lose his first match back in over a year after double knee surgery is a little different from thinking the current world #2 will lose every match he plays.
I should also point out that the reason Roger returned to the Hoppman Cup in 2017 was that he knew he'd be rusty and could realistically lose his first match back, and he wanted guaranteed match play that the Hoppman Cup provided as opposed to a real tournament like Doha. Obviously there was no choice this time around.

So I'd say I'm being about as realistic as he was in 2017. Right now I'm not assuming he'll win his first match, but if he does I'll re-evaluate my opinion about his prospects going forward instead of doubling-down on my negativity like some do.

Federer has 3 things working against more this time than in 2017

1. He’s 4 years older and he’s now the oldest man ranked in the top 100

2. His layoff this time has been twice as long.

3. Federer likely won’t have a new skill added to his repertoire(pseudo backhand).

i will be ecstatic if he wins his first match, then is good enough to push Coric to 3 sets in the next round.

We have to see where his level is at. It will improve over time but there are no guarantees here. He could lose to Evans. He has a better chance against Chardy. I would expect Coric to beat Roger. If not, shame on Coric.

Well, Fed only had double knee surgery. But it is not like Rafa who is always injured, rusty, and whining.

Tough draw for Federer. Coric and Millman have caused him problems in his old age with their steadiness and defensive grinding. I could easily see him losing that match. I honestly like his chances of beating Shapo better than beating Coric or Millman. Shapo will donate points.

How about the players purposely throwing their matches for the greater good of the industry ?

Always love me some good Saturday conspiracy banter.

Who knows, I don't really expect much.

He didn't play for a long time and no amount of practice can compare with an actual competitive match played at full intensity.

Let's say QF but it wouldn't shock me if he'd lose in the 1st round either.

Difficult question, really need to see that first match. He could crash and burn in the first round, or win the whole thing, or lose around the quarters. All options are very viable at the moment. If he put in a solid performance to start, then I would start thinking if he is walking away with the title.

Enough to satisfy contractual obligations relating to a seven figure appearance money payment. A few meet and greets and some other tournament major sponsors related obligations. A little hit on the court to test the body. And a sayonara.

But roger's first slam will be rg so no way he wins that but if wimbledon is his 1st tournament then it could turn true
