This place Thrashers in Ocean City MD has the best fries I ever had. Sprinkle a little malt vinegar and some Old Bay on those joints and thats it.

Been open almost 100 years and all they make is fries. Hand Cut fresh and fried in peanut oil.

I make my own French fries at home. They're absolutely great, and do try sweet potato fries.

I believe the best "restaurant fries" I've ever had was at a Chicago hot dog shop that had a little potato crank cutter mounted to the wall: they would take a potato, put it in there, crank the pull down and out would come sliced fry-sized potatoes. Then this would go directly into the fry vat. Fresh as can be in a restaurant context.

Actually my wife has grown potatoes in the garden, and it's fun digging them up. You can REALLY get fresh French fries if you do this!

I'm a potatoes guy again. Never really bothered with Mickey D chips. Burger King chips are alright.

Yeah, that's a good point you make. I don't rave about McD's fries. Some people do. I think when they moved away from frying in tallow they lost something.

this is not very good technique. The cut fries should be rinsed in cold water to remove excess starch, dried, THEN fried preferably twice

Yes, this was the famous McDonald's discovery, rinsing out the starch overnight. BUT the method I described tastes best to me, ymmv.

(I'm not sure I'd like twice-fried fries).

Don’t think there’s any Checkers in Aus. When I fly to America one day which is on my bucket list, I’ll have to try these Fries everyone is raving about. Although if I agree that they’re the best unfortunately I’ll probably only get to have them once.

I have read McD first blanches it’s fries, fries them once at relatively low temperature and then freezes them. Then at the restaurant the frozen fries get fried a second time at relatively high temperature until golden brown.

McD switched from beef tallow to vegetable oil for frying years ago. McD adds other stuff into its fries you‘re not likely to do at home none of which sound healthy to me but I’m sure add to the flavor and look.

I like Steak fries but usally they end up too dry lol

Thats what the sour cream is for. I see ppl dipping their steak fries into ketchup like children do their chicken strips, i just smh.

A steak fry should be treated like a baked potatoe with its compliments. Its a perfect form of the potatoe

Dip any french fry into sour creame and it transforms like optimus prime, ppl sleeping on the power of the potatoe. Bacon bits, cheese etc

Steak and Shake's skinny fries can be really good.

When I was a broke and hungry grad student there was a restaurant that served fries with a lot of skin on them; first time I'd run into this. A plate of these would make dinner.

Many many many years ago, Carl’s Jr. (Hardee’s) had this SPAM like French fries that were to die for. Sure it was like what Pringle’s are to potato chips, but man it was great.

that said, while in-n-out has my favorite fast food burger, their fries are inedible.

Diabetes and cardiac diseases hello.

That type of food is more deadly than smoking cigarettes.

I find it sickeningly humorous that there are so many nut jobs (and politicians, which is perhaps a subclass of nutters) who jump up and down wanting legalized dope. . . without batting an eye at the myriad health problems involved. Confusing and contradictory public policy; real disservice to public health.

So gulping French fries seems pretty okay.

It’s always an excuse isn’t it?
Cardiac and diabetes problems stems from bad food habits. Smoking dope doesn’t create these kind of problems. You can’t compare this.
Its really no hope for your country If many thinks like you do. The average health standard is really low, mainly because of eating unhealthy food. Smoking weed all day, even 30 cigs a day, leads to less health problems than what comes to the type of nutrition you give your body.

The fast food lovers could might as well in this thread post what type of cigarette they like the best, what type of weed etc. Less harmful.

The negatives of dope are many and no one has taken the time to read the research. Perhaps you have time now. But yeah, worse than cigarettes by far. It's maddening that the same group of politicians that supported anti-tobacco measures are now pro-smoking. Bad public policy; costly for the public health and welfare.

I don't contrast the smoking with cardiac/diabetes problems. Why should anyone? Note that smoking IS a high contributor to cardiac problems. But I think so many in 2020 have an almost New Age belief that Diet is all the matters, and that if they only eat "pure" foods or vegetarian or organic, whatever, that that takes care of their health completely. It doesn't. Some have a religious faith that Brussel sprouts and beans will make them live forever. NOT by any means putting this in the Ghost's mouth, though. But then, I didn't draw a contrast although one was imputed to me for some reason. This said, a package of French fries once a week is probably less harmful than regular doping.

As always got some slaying going on :p

I don't know what this means, folks. Smoking is conclusively shown to cause cardiac problems. I'm hoping this isn't being discounted because it's smoking something other than tobacco. It's a health problem. I agree entirely that being fat is horrible for your health and leads to many, many complications. So, too, does smoking. These things are known and are established facts, so "slaying"? is irrelevant and curious and anti-scientific, if I understand the import of what you're saying.

A package of French fries once a week isn't going to kill you. Being a regular smoker will. It's the facts, jack.

One of the genuinely sad things here is that dope smoking gets protected by dissembling, by jokes, by people who may have experimented a few times and, having few immediate consequences, then go around a discount/pooh-pooh the health concern. Definitely anti-science.

This kind of 'tain't a problem" discounting took place with cigarettes decades back. But it was a problem. Shown to be a problem, the smoking-protectors protected even more and even harder. But eventually science won, despite all the boggling and dissembling the smokers put forth.

Sad to see public policy here being driven by the irrationals.

I’m not saying it’s not problems at all w dope, but it’s not comparable with bad eating habits. The results you can’t deny.
Only obesity itself is way more harmful for the body than smoking. This is 101 medical knowledge.
Here they have found out the bad effects of smoking weed is so low that we don’t bother to criminalise them anymore, and we have one of the most healthiest people in the world w an advanced health system. You don’t see people here dying from the pandemic that aren’t very old and almost dying from before. Average 85 years old, which is a higher average death rate countries have even before the virus.

A package of fries once a week isn’t the way things were talked about here and eating habits.

Both are bad. That's what I've said. We agree, so why go on? When you have a chance, do study more about the negative impacts of the drug. Include the social costs and it skyrockets.

At this point, I just let science talk.

Back to fries :D don't even respond to him again. I can see how badly he wants to turn this thread into nonsense (which he is wrong about anyway). If you're bored Max, go make a mediocre pizza.
When this virus crisis is completely over. Let’s go to Italy and have some real pizza! There, the fast food you can get is so tasty and healthy too! Me and 125 were eating so much and high on food, we thought seriously one eating place put Valium in the food (like seriously). The thought of eating fries wouldn’t cross your mind even the slightest!

I have studied the impacts already and I know a lot about it cause I’m in medicine.
Social costs here isn’t sky rocketing, it’s rather the opposite. When you criminalise it the costs of that is way higher. Those money can be rather used to help people, those who takes it and don’t function so well can get better help. It’s a type of self medicating. Drug abuse and finding the reason why they do so, heal that, is the most cost effective.

No one believes that. Everyone knows that exercise, for example, is important. Another gross exaggeration with no basis. Given the same lifestyle, cleaning up food is the first step. Next is exercise. No one has a religious faith in beans.

Marijuana apparently has many benefits. And where it has been legalized, there hasn't been a surge of crime and homelessness as some predicted.

It has been taken for thousands of years.

I have heard magic mushrooms are also great.

One of the biggest pockets of support for marijuana it seems are the conservative oldies in retirement homes in Florida.

Five Guys fries FTW.

End of thread.
Best fries are properly done fresh cut, twice fried “boardwalk fries”. But only right out of the fryer (no take out).

We have a good Jewish deli here. Guy does everything right.

Curly fries would tend to have more caramelization on the ridge lines and taste crispier as a consequence, all other things being equal.

I am more of a straight.

Since most people don’t use a fryer at home anymore, many frozen fries are made to be baked. Same goes for frozen, battered fish and shrimp, etc. You really have to read the cooking directions to know which is which.

Do those air fryer things produce anything tasty? Humans find taste in fat, sugar, and salt. Less fat tastes less good in honest evaluations.
